My doctor told me today that I do not need contraception as I am breastfeeding and can't get pregnant
Im sure this isn't right and I don't think I will be taking the advice

Well I was breastfeeding and my ds & dd are 11 months apart! I continued to breastfeed after dd and I am expecting baby 3 in December (all babies were planned)

Breastfeeding is NOT a form of contraception. If you do not want another baby you need to sort some form of contraception and how daft for a doctor to advise you otherwise

She's very very wrong. I'd actually email the practice manager (politely) attaching some links and asking that the GPS do some refresher reading about breastfeeding.

I really couldn't believe it when she said it.I hope no one takes the advice if they don't want children any time soon. I definetly wouldn't rely on this theory

my mum got pregnant with triplets while breastfeeding my big brother, who was 4 months old at the time. Not only was breastfeeding not an effective contraceptive but she ended up having to stop breastfeeding my brother early so as not to miscarry.

No op, my periods started pretty much straight away after all my dc despite me breastfeeding. I presume I was fertile. Dangerous advice there.

Er - I think this belongs with the idea that you can't get pregnant if the woman is on top and that you can't get pregnant the first time.

Bad advice and untrue (I was still breastfeeding my eldest when I fell pregnant, though he was having other liquids as well). It's not a reliable contraception at all (not that we personally were using it as such!).

My hospital gave me a leaflet where breastfeeding was considered contraception.

I got a coil fitted as I don’t want the risk of another. My boy is only 4 weeks.

I think It is something like 96% effective IF you:
Feed every 3-4 hours (even through the night)
Do not give the baby a dummy or bottle.
And ya only for the first 6 months while they are exclusively breast fed (no solids)
I think it’s called the LAM method ?

I’m pregnant with a surprise baby 2 (well not that much of a surprise as I wasn’t taking contraception) but I was still breastfeeding and hadn’t had a period since before I conceived my first. I think it’s pretty effective for the first six months (or until baby starts sleeping through reliably - which mine was!). I’m pleased the dr gave you a prescription as relying on breastfeeding would be risky!!

It's not a reliable form of contraception! Your hormonal response vs levels of hormones isn't necessarily "average" or text book. I managed to get pregnant whilst bf (I was trying) and with each child the Drs and midwives and health visitors have checked I have considered contraception.

If you are exclusively breast feeding . With no top up feeds or solids, still doing night feeds, no dummy use. And if your periods have not returned yet. And the baby is under 6 months old. Few women follow those rules exactly (night feeds especially).

I know women who have become pregnant whilst using the implant- the most effective form of contraception there is.

Short of avoiding sex with men, nothing is 100%. So you absolutely should not have been told you can't get pregnant. You can be told it is a contraceptive choice.

Those of you calling for retraining may want to check things more closely.

Yeah it’s like all natural forms of contraception, it might work if you meet the specific criteria, but you can ovulate, not know, and end up pg having never had another period post baby 1, so if it’s important, don’t rely on it!
