My doctor told me today that I do not need contraception as I am breastfeeding Hmm and can't get pregnant
Im sure this isn't right and I don't think I will be taking the advice

NotAgainYoda's twattish comment wasn't that subtle that I didn't report it along with the others.

In fact, I only opened the thread because I knew the posters who have so little to feel good about in life that they resort to smug digs like this would be out in force. Wink

Babababababybel23 · 01/11/2017 19:30

I did see notagainyodas comment so it wasn't subtle and I did acknowledge it but they have name changed since they said it. They were named Angelo to begin with

PerfumeIsAMessage · 01/11/2017 19:32

No, they are 2 different members of the SPaG police.

morningconstitutional2017 · 01/11/2017 19:33

I've heard of this being used as a form of contraception in some countries - those with a high birth rate. It's not reliable - my SIL has two children born around 11 months apart to vouch for this.

If you feel the need for contraception I'd go elsewhere for advice IIWY.

Bubblebubblepop · 01/11/2017 19:38

I'm surprised people are so shocked about this. I was told by at least 4 HCP including an gynae, family planning nurse, GP and midwife.

My understanding is it is reliable (but not 100% as nothing is) if the mother meets the strict criteria mentioned above- doing night feeds, 100% milk no water, food, formula or dummy.

SparklyUnicornPoo · 01/11/2017 19:44

You definitely can get pregnant while breastfeeding, my youngest 5 siblings were breastfed and born close together, less than a year between each of them, all fed on demand and self weaned, so some of my siblings were conceived while mum was breastfeeding 2 or 3 children.

Bubblebubblepop · 01/11/2017 19:45

Well yes, you can get pregnant using condoms too. Lots of people do

Beeziekn33ze · 01/11/2017 19:46

Yoda, Angelo, and Mike. How would we all manage without your patrolling of our threads? What full lives you must lead. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

diddl · 01/11/2017 19:54

Thing that I don't get is, years ago before contraception, women were having babies perhaps annually-were none of these babies bfed??

turbohamster · 01/11/2017 19:55

Whilst I know the plural of anecdote is not data, the number of women I personally know who got pregnant whilst breastfeeding suggests the 98% effective figure being touted cannot possibly be accurate.

lonelyandangry · 01/11/2017 19:58

I was solely breast feeding my new born and one day they slept for four hours and didn't have a feed. My period came back and I got pregnant the next month.

Bubblebubblepop · 01/11/2017 19:59

But turbo you have no idea whether they followed the "criteria" specified

itshappening · 01/11/2017 20:02

The first thing I noticed about the thread was the grammar fail. I wasn't about to correct it as I assumed an adult making that mistake was fairly likely to be uninterested. I make mistakes too, not quite as glaring I hope. Having seen others attacked for correcting the mistake, i just wanted to point out that for many (or maybe most) the glaring error will be their first and lasting impression. It is not some trivial side issue. It speaks volumes. I am not saying that it should matter, I am saying that it does undermine and detract from the OP's point.

Babababababybel23 · 01/11/2017 20:08

If the first thing you notice about the thread is the grammar and you known that you have no intention of reading or answering the actual thread then why bother at all. I don't really care about your opinion of my grammar so whywaste your time at all Hmm

Utter rubbish, speaking from experience I fell pregnant whilst breastfeeing and my periods had not restarted. At my six week check I said that I wanted more children. GP said how would I feel if I came back at the four month check up and was pregnant. He said if my response would be oh dear then I should take contraception. If response would be oops but great I'll have a small age gap then don't bother. His recommendation that as soon as the gap lengthens between feeds and this can be after a couple of days then ovulation can occur. I also fell pregnant again after my second and was also breastfeeding. I know some out there will say I should have stopped feeding whilst pregnant but I took advice from my health visitor who said it's fine to do although some will think It's odd.

Sparkerparker · 01/11/2017 20:21

Your doctor is talking utter sh*t. I conceived 2 children while breastfeeding and was also conceived myself whilst my mum was breastfeeding.
What bonkers advice and completely irresponsible

PerfumeIsAMessage · 01/11/2017 20:28

Itshappening- maybe if she was handing me an English essay.

She isn't.

You're correct about the impressions though. My impression of you, thanks to your comment, places you straight into the petty little group of SPaG bullies.

Salva · 01/11/2017 20:29

I like 51’s explanation of how they get to the 98%figure. It must be skewed by the fact most women don’t have sex for the first 6 weeks so there’s 100% for those weeks, and won’t be having it as regularly as non post natal women. If I was part of a study I’d be much more careful if I broke the rules so again I’d be less likely to get pregnant.

Happyhippy45 · 01/11/2017 20:33

I smell bullshit. No HCP would say this.

Frankthefrog · 01/11/2017 20:35

Yeah my ds2 might disprove this... x

Babababababybel23 · 01/11/2017 20:36

@Happyhippy45
A few people have said they have been told this too, I knew instantly it was bullshit advice though

Sara107 · 01/11/2017 20:40

I was under the impression this was a myth. I was visited by the contraceptive police in hospital about a day after giving birth by ECS while still hooked to a drip and catheter demanding to know what contraception I was planning to use. Not having sex until I was at least able to go to the lavatory again apparently wasn't a good enough answer. When I told the old bag that I had needed IVF to get pregnant in the first place, that also wasn't a good enough answer. She got very huffy and lectured me about how amazingly fertile you become after having a baby, breastfeeding certainly didn't feature on her approved contraceptive list.

itshappening · 01/11/2017 20:52

Yes, my first impression was of the grammatical error. The thread title doesn't actually indicate the subject matter so I was hardly able to anticipate that. I did click on the thread and I read it out of interest in the topic, with no intention of commenting on any grammar issues. It didn't matter to me what mistakes were made. However, as I pointed out in my comment above, it was after seeing others attacked as petty bullies for correcting the error that I felt like commenting. I did not attack the OP in any way. I just pointed out that grammar is not some insignificant side issue. I have had my own grammatical errors corrected on MN, I didn't mind at all or react so defensively.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/11/2017 20:55

My dd got pregnant while still b-feeding no. 1.

Result, 15 month age gap between babies. So no. 1 was only 6 months, and still b-feeding a dozen times a day at least.
No disaster in their case, but you really, really can't rely on it as a form of contraception. I'm astonished that any doctor would give such advice.

diddl · 01/11/2017 20:56

So, just being nosy out of interest, those who became pregnant whilst bfeeding-were you hoping to or were you using it as contraception as advised by an HCP?
