My doctor told me today that I do not need contraception as I am breastfeeding Hmm and can't get pregnant
Im sure this isn't right and I don't think I will be taking the advice

Not only was breastfeeding not an effective contraceptive but she ended up having to stop breastfeeding my brother early so as not to miscarry.

This just isn't true! Breastfeeding is not a cause of miscarriage.

It is true, at least in this particular case. A few months into the pregnancy she started passing huge clots literally during a breastfeed; phoned her GP and he said she had to stop as the womb contractions from breastfeeding were jeopardizing the womb lining.

@Albertschair

*(I've no idea what you do with babies who suck their thumb. Do they count as if you were using a dummy or not?)

Not all women who exclusively breast feed will have their periods suppressed. Breast feeding only works in those who do have periods suppressed.*

I had no periods for 8 months with my first DC who was a thumb sucker. Breast fed on demand. With DC#2 they were not a thumb sucker and didn't have a dummy. Breast fed on demand. Periods came back practically immediately I was pregnant again the next month.

I completely agree with itshappening. I would not usually comment on a grammatical error that didn't obscure the meaning, not even one as glaring as this (and it really is glaring). But I do not think the way people including itshappening have been attacked for pointing out the error is OK. It's got nothing to do with people who find these sorts of errors hard to take being 'SPaG bullies'.

To go on topic, I think the issue is not so much bf not having a contraceptive effect, as it clearly can, than the huge potential for error in use, so to speak - much greater than for most methods of contraception, as the variables that need to be in place are multiple and nuanced, and then there's the added complication of hormones affecting each person's cycle and reproductive capability differently. I think wording like 'Breastfeeding, particularly exclusive breastfeeding done throughout the day and night, may delay the return of your cycle and/or have a contraceptive effect, but if you do not want to conceive again you should not rely on it as a sole method of contraception' would be fair enough.

Can we all just get off the subject of grammar please, it's pointless and pathetic

Grammar is pointless and pathetic? Confused

Babababababybel23 · 01/11/2017 21:57

The complaining about it is pointless and pathetic and nothing to do with this thread.

TOTAL rubbish. I fell preg with ds2 while bf DS1 (aged 10 months). Wasn’t using any other form of contraception as wanted to fall preg again straight away as had been trying for first baby for 5yrs. BF did not stop me falling. Dr even told me off (I was 35!) and said bf is not reliable contraception! I told dr I wasn’t using bf this was as I wanted to fall

CatsRidingRollercoasters · 01/11/2017 22:31

I stopped breastfeeding dc1 when I was 4 months pregnant with dc2...

DorisDangleberry · 01/11/2017 22:35

I fell pregnant when Michael Fallon put his hand on my knee. So you can never be too careful

Dilligaf81 · 01/11/2017 23:57

Ignore her. Baby no 3 was conceived after I was told I didn't need contraception. Baby 2 was only 2 months old when I found out I was pregnant. I was exclusively breastfeeding and hadn't had a period so according to the pamphlets I couldn't conceive 🤔
Bit of a shock but always planned to have 4 so no 3 was just earlier than we imagined.

Your doc is talking bollocks. Technically it's more difficult but absolutely not impossible. Breastfeeding suppresses ovulation, supposedly guaranteeing the baby the best possible start, but it's not a guaranteed method. I'd get hubby to dress up if you want to put off number two.

Currently pregnant whilst breastfeeding....:)

SumAndSubstance · 02/11/2017 21:41

I was visited by the contraceptive police

Haha, that's a perfect description. I've always been taken by surprise by the borderline aggressive questioning about contraception that follows the birth of a child. The last time this happened I told the GP I had no intention of having sex for some reasonable time and anyway I was Catholic. She had no answer to that. Nonetheless, at least nobody has tried to tell me that I won't get pregnant if I am breastfeeding I suppose!
