To go to this salon, by myself?

I’m 21. I need a hair transformation, overdue colour correction and extensions fitted, stylist said this will probably take over 6 hours.

The guy that I’m going to is amazing, I follow him on Instagram and his balayage work is beautiful. I have waited so long to sort my hair out as salons near me (Coventry) couldn’t achieve his results

I wouldn’t normally mind going by myself, but I just feel anxious about going to a salon that I’ve never been to before for so long, and going alone. His salon is in Manchester so I’d need to make a day trip and drive up too.

I need my hair doing ASAP and my friends are busy when he has appointments, so it seems like I’ll have to go alone. Am I being silly to be anxious about going alone? Should I just find a more local salon?

Would it not look a bit odd if you took someone with you? What are they meant to do for the six hours whilst you’re having your hair done?

Honestly, go alone. Take a book, some snacks and a bottle of water.

Do people really take a companion with them for a hair appointment? Charge your phone, take a magazine, relax!

I've never taken anyone to a salon appointment. I used to work in a beauty related job and if anyone brought someone with them I'd say it was fine and make them welcome but it was really awkward and boring for them.

Do people go to hair appts with other people?! I always go alone it is "me" time. I chat a bit and mostly look on my phone and read and drink lots of free drinks (non alcoholic!) And relax. Go and enjoy yourself have some "me" time!

Aside from looking at other people's holiday snaps and listening to what they dreamt about, watching someone get their hair done for 6 hours sounds just about one of the most boring things I've ever heard of.

I'm sure you'll be totally fine once your in and started but if you feel weird you could always casually drop into conversation that your meeting your friends after your appointment, it might help you feel a bit more like your not seen as alone.

On a practical level if it makes you feel better you can make a plan with someone (friend/family) that you txt when you get there and txt or call after it. If you don't hear from me by x time this is what you do etc.

If I were your friend, you'd owe me big time if you drug me to the salon to watch you have your hair done for six hours. Grin

Just go, make a day of it.

Of course go alone! I relish my salon time -the only time I get to properly sit down on my own and relax with a drink and a magazine. I would hate to go with anyone and have to chat.

I've never never taken anybody along to a hair appointment, I think it's a really weird idea tbh. You'll be fine by yourself surely?

I don't understand. You're worried about going to a hair appointment on your own? Do you usually take someone with you? Do you suffer from anxiety? It's normal to go on your own. I could sort of understand if maybe the stylist was working from home and would be just the two of you, but they'll be other people around in a salon. He won't think you don't have friends just because you've come alone as that's normal.

There will be others in and out of the salon at that time too surely? It would be very unusual to take someone to a salon with you to sit around for 6 hours

Two things amaze me about this post-
1- anyone would travel so far for a hair cut Smile
2- you'd consider taking someone with you to endure a hair appointment. Are they going to just watch?!

Well if i’m with my friends we just catch up, they usually get something done too. I guess I see it as normal going with your friends then going out after. We do work as well so sometimes ‘nail/hair dates’ are the only time we’re free at the same time.

Have done things by myself too though. I’m only anxious this time as I’ll be going to a new salon, in a different city, and be there for 6 hours (never been in a salon that long!). His salon isn’t a franchise or anything, it’s just him.

I am kind of thinking the stylist will think I have no friends or think I’m weird. It will be obvious that I’m not from Manchester so he’ll know that I visited a different city by myself too. Or would that just not even cross his mind?

See if I was going to London for example I wouldn’t even mind because I’m v familiar with it, used to live there and could make a proper day of it. I have never been to Manchester/Preston before

If he's amazing as you say, he's probably used to people coming from different cities to see him. And it's typical to go alone to have your hair done. He won't think anything of it.

Surely he is used to seeing people all day every day.. on their own.. why would he think you are weird???

If it's his salon and he will be doing your hair, I would definitely tell him that you made the trip just to see him after seeing his work on Instagram, what a compliment!

Take a deep breath and stop over thinking things! You're an adult!

The stylist will think you are bonkers if you bring a companion for a six hour hair session. That’s not the same as getting your hair done with your friends on a day out (usually a couple of hours max). Just go and enjoy!

I would have thought that your stylist would think it weird if you did take someone. Do you include the stylist in your conversation or just talk amongst yourselves?

Most salons wouldn't have room if everyone took a friend along.
