To ask how the hell you would ice a choc orange cake?

I honestly have no clue which thread I should have used. Currently trying out a chocolate orange cake ready for a do on Sunday so want to get it right.
Only problem is...
How the hell do I do the cream cheese icing? Orange favouring or none? Its a simple round cake (see picture) and I'm only trialing the one layer atm as I ran out of ingredients as going shopping tomorrow.
So.. orange flavouring?
Vanilla?
Something else??? I'm not in the slightest bit sure and don't have loads of time to mess around tomorrow with it.

To ask how the hell you would ice a choc orange cake?

Also.. DH is useless and isn't giving me any ideas. All he's said is "as long as it tastes good it's fine". Hmm

Does it have to be cream cheese? That seems an odd choice to me.

How about chocolate buttercream instead?

TheMasterNotMargarita · 22/09/2017 20:33

I would do chocolate orange but I'm a huge fan of that particular combo Grin

Tidypidy · 22/09/2017 20:34

Melt a chocolate orange and pour it over!

JaimesGoldenHand · 22/09/2017 20:35

Agree with pp. I would do buttercream- orange, choc orange or poss orange & lemon

Herechickychicky · 22/09/2017 20:35

I think orange cream cheese frosting sounds AMAZING.

MsJolly · 22/09/2017 20:35

Chocolate buttercream icing with orange essence added

doodlejump1980 · 22/09/2017 20:36

Do a layer of orange jelly, then cover in a mirror chocolate glaze. Make it like a big Jaffa cake?

Kochicoo · 22/09/2017 20:36

I did a chocolate orange cake with chocolate orange ganache icing and it was lovely (and very easy). Not much help if it must be cream cheese!

DeadDoorpost · 22/09/2017 20:37

Flavia Well, it doesn't have to be I suppose but I've never done a buttercream icing before. May have to have a look into it. The lemon one I did for the carrot cake (as asked for, I don't know either) earlier on for DH turned out surprisingly good.
TheMaster I'm a huge fan too. Trying not to eat my way through the cake now tbh

I second melting a chocolate orange and pouring over the top. I'd use either marmalade or orange curd to sandwich layers together.

MrsHathaway · 22/09/2017 20:38

You can get orange oil in the supermarket - which isn't bake stable btw so can't be cooked. Just make normal cream cheese frosting or buttercream (300g icing sugar, 80g butter, 25ml whole milk) and fold in a few drops.

Though personally I'd make chocolate buttercream, ganache or custard with orange oil in it for a Chocolate Orange Cake.

mygorgeousmilo · 22/09/2017 20:39

I would cut through the middle, layer of marmalade, and thin layer of vanilla creamcheese buttercream, then maybe more creamcheese icing on top with some shavings of chocolate

PatriciaHolm · 22/09/2017 20:39

I'd cover it in ganache

www.google.co.uk/amp/allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/4871/chocolate-ganache.aspx/amp/

With orange curd in the middle.
Yum.

Subtlecheese · 22/09/2017 20:39

I had a slice of one the other day whilst out. It was a chocolate buttercream with a slice of chocolate orange on each slice.

FlaviaAlbia · 22/09/2017 20:39

It's really easy, it's just butter whisked with icing sugar and coca powder.

I'm just unconvinced about the combination of cheese, chocolate and orange. Even a very mild cheese.

mygorgeousmilo · 22/09/2017 20:39

Ooh or yes chocolate ganache on top with marmalade and creamcheese inside

cheeseandcrackers · 22/09/2017 20:40

Definitely chocolate cream cheese icing (melt bar plain chic, stir in Philadelphia, couldn't be easier), less sweet than buttercream and delicious. Then decorate with Terry's chocolate orange segments around the edge

SpinDry · 22/09/2017 20:41

Chocolate orange ganache is gorgeous and easy. I pot of double cream, poured into 1 melted bar of dark Chocolate, and stirred like crazy till thickened add to that the zest and juice of an orange. I make choc orange cake once a month and it's always a bit.

RitaMills · 22/09/2017 20:41

Definitely a chocolate orange ganache filling and topping.

TheMasterNotMargarita · 22/09/2017 20:41

Giant Jaffa Cake Shock < this is my mouth wide open waiting for a piece.

formerbabe · 22/09/2017 20:41

Yep I was going to say chocolate ganache too...quite easy, just cream and chocolate. You could make it orange flavour too.

Or buttercream...I wouldn't do cream cheese icing though.

Foggymist · 22/09/2017 20:46

Cream cheese icing, bleh. Do a third melted dark chocolate, a third sieved icing sugar and a third butter, beat well and add some orange essence, fab.

LittleOwl153 · 22/09/2017 20:49

I'd do chocolate ganache - 1 pt double cream, warmed to just below boiling. Throw in broken up chocolate 1kg (50% cocoa plus) stir. Leave to cool enough to handle then spread on! I'd also second an orange jelly inside Jaffa cake style.

Good luck!

DeadDoorpost · 22/09/2017 20:49

PatriciaHolm and MrsHathaway cheers for the recipes, I'll take a look and try them out in the morning.

The ganash does remind me of the one my sister made once... it was incredibly sickly. May be a bad memory though so can't just pass it up.

I'm starting to think the cream cheese cream wouldn't be the best option now. Glad I asked you all.
