To ask how the hell you would ice a choc orange cake?

I honestly have no clue which thread I should have used. Currently trying out a chocolate orange cake ready for a do on Sunday so want to get it right.
Only problem is...
How the hell do I do the cream cheese icing? Orange favouring or none? Its a simple round cake (see picture) and I'm only trialing the one layer atm as I ran out of ingredients as going shopping tomorrow.
So.. orange flavouring?
Vanilla?
Something else??? I'm not in the slightest bit sure and don't have loads of time to mess around tomorrow with it.

Smooth dark choc icing all over, then when set drizzle orange coloured & flavoured icing randomly over the top.

blobatina poo cake Grin

I guess the concern with cream cheese frosting is that it has to be refrigerated.

graziemille · 23/09/2017 03:31

Chocolate ganache then decorate with a chocolate orange divided into segments. Then very light dusting of icing sugar at last minute over segments. That's what I do.

Glamorousglitter · 23/09/2017 07:47

Choc ganache with some
Orange peel to flavour it

Stormyweather1 · 23/09/2017 09:05

Yum! I do a chocolate orange cake and top it with a ganache of dark chocolate, juice of half an orange and either double cream or Greek yogurt. Then grated zest on top. Could totally do with a large slice for breakfast now!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/09/2017 09:07

I would make it as a loaf cake, then ice it with icing sugar, cocoa and orange oil plonked on the top so it drizzles down the sides- always goes down well and I make it a lot.

RiversrunWoodville · 23/09/2017 09:14

Dark chocolate ganache is much less sickly than milk (although tbf I'd eat any of them with a spoon) but for a chocolate orange cake for my mum Lidl does a choc orange dark bar and I mixed a few squares in with my dark chocolate callers when I was melting to give a rich orange flavour

Make some plain buttercream. Pipe little 'rosettes' at intervals around the top and decorate with slices of chocolate orange.
Make chocolate buttercream, spread over the top and sprinkle all over with grated orange peel/orange zest.
Top with ganache and crystallised orange/chocolate dipped crystallised orange.
Flat ice in white, drizzle orange food colouring through in a spiral, then use a cocktail stick or skewer to draw straight lines radiating from the centre.

I am a bit late to this but would have done a dark chocolate ganache with a dash of cointreau.

Red velvet cake tastes like arse because it can't be made properly any more. The cocoa was processed in such a way that adding buttermilk made it turn red. It was never supposed to be a chocolate cake with a shit ton of food colouring

I used Philadelphia cream cheese, cocoa powder , icing sugar , finely grated orange rind and a little squeezed orange juice from said orange , bit sticky but delicious . I also put some orange juice drizzled into the cake before icing it.

Moanyoldcow · 23/09/2017 09:29

Chocolate orange ganache. Delicious

MrsHathaway · 23/09/2017 10:02

Ooh yes.

Cream cheese frosting with some zingy marmalade blitzed in with it is awesome. I use it on carrot cakes.

youarenotkiddingme · 23/09/2017 10:20

Marmalade in the middle with chocolate orange buttercream on top - yum!

tamepanda · 23/09/2017 11:46

What about doing a chocolate buttercream on top with exploding chocolate orange segments on top.

TammySwansonTwo · 23/09/2017 12:32

Buttercream and cream cheese frosting and very similar to make, just make sure your butter is very soft and whip it with your mixer (or spoon) before adding the sugar very gradually. You don't want to beat it too fast once the sugar goes in as you'll get air bubbles.

I'd do chocolate buttercream with some orange Zest, or chocolate ganache (seems scary but it easy to make)

DeadDoorpost · 23/09/2017 15:18

I've just managed to try out the buttercream icing and I am amazed I've never done it before because omg it's amazing.

As for the ganash, turns out I have made it before but without realising Blush Think I'm going to use the buttercream in the middle and the ganash on the top. Cake is currently baking so I'll post later when it's all cooled down and done.

Again, thank you everyone for helping. Going to make a carrot cake for DH again later to stop him from trying to eat this one....

Orange oil flavoured chocolate ganache.

TheVoiceOfTreason · 23/09/2017 15:22

Chocolate orange ganache - I can send a link to the recipe I use if you like? It's got a teeny bit of Cointreau in it and it's scrummy!

Good work on the cake btw. 😊

DeadDoorpost · 23/09/2017 18:16

Here you go... went for a milk chocolate ganash on the outside as the cake itself was pretty dark so it would have tasted too bitter overall.
And inside is the buttercream, plain vanilla.

Just got to make sure DH doesn't touch it now. I've temporarily pacified him with the left over ganash but that won't last for very long...
