To ask how the hell you would ice a choc orange cake?

I honestly have no clue which thread I should have used. Currently trying out a chocolate orange cake ready for a do on Sunday so want to get it right.
Only problem is...
How the hell do I do the cream cheese icing? Orange favouring or none? Its a simple round cake (see picture) and I'm only trialing the one layer atm as I ran out of ingredients as going shopping tomorrow.
So.. orange flavouring?
Vanilla?
Something else??? I'm not in the slightest bit sure and don't have loads of time to mess around tomorrow with it.

To ask how the hell you would ice a choc orange cake?

Cream cheese icing is lovely - with some orange zest in it. It'll make the chocolate seem more chocolatey.

DeadDoorpost · 22/09/2017 20:51

Just realised a actually could do a giant jaffa cake... There's jelly in the cupboard that I was going to make up the other day and never did...
Only problem though... can't try it out as DH has quite literally eaten half the cake I just made. I turn my back....

Lazy filling of shredless marmalade and chocolate spread, chocolate ganache topping decorated with chocolate orange pieces.

OlennasWimple · 22/09/2017 20:57

Ganache was my first thought too - definitely not cream cheese!

RB68 · 22/09/2017 21:05

just use orange zest in it

Everyone who says 'bleh' or 'no' to cream cheese icing have you never had red velvet cake? Heaven😀

ILoveDolly · 22/09/2017 21:21

I wish I had some right now

MrsHathaway · 22/09/2017 21:21

There's a lovely cream cheese frosting for dark chocolate brownie. Also lovely on carrot cake.

But not with chocolate orange.

FlaviaAlbia · 22/09/2017 21:29

I have had red velvet cake Willow2017 but I can't see what the hype is about. All the ones I've tried have been a bit bland.

I keep wondering if it's the ones I've tried or if I'm just missing something...

DeadDoorpost · 22/09/2017 21:31

@CoveredInFondant I didn't realise about the cream cheese (not a baker myself, this is just a small family do) but I guess I'd not want to make anyone ill either. Thanks for that.
I think I'm just going to have to stick to the buttercream or ganash then. Thanks everyone!

I love chocolate orange cake. Whenever I make it, I just melt a Terry's chocolate orange, whip some cream and mix the chocolate in. It's delicious 😋

Ttbb · 22/09/2017 21:34

Make sure that you make the icing out of proper cream cheese not the stuff that comes out of a tub and use a bit of orange zest to flavour it.

PersisFord · 22/09/2017 21:45

I would do a plain bitter choc ganache but fill it with a very tangy orange curd.

picklemepopcorn · 22/09/2017 21:47

Cream cheese icing with chocolate orange slices or Jaffa cakes arranged on top.

VanillaSugar · 22/09/2017 21:50

I think vanilla icing would be very good indeed.

JaimesGoldenHand · 22/09/2017 22:15

Just been browsing the Lakeland catalogue and I see they do a chocolate orange frosting. Buy it and spread it on! Making your own likely to be cheaper though, obvs.

fc301 · 22/09/2017 22:19

Squeeze a satsuma. Mix with icing sugar. Dimples.

fc301 · 22/09/2017 22:19

Simples!

this glaze would be lovely.

blobatina · 22/09/2017 22:35

Melted Terry's chocolate orange works well. Goes nice and hard. Looks awful, I call it Poo Cake, but tastes delicious.

bridgetreilly · 23/09/2017 00:56

DO NOT USE CREAM CHEESE.
As registered bakers,we can't use it. It is too dangerous as you cannot guarantee it being stored correctly.

Yes, but as a home baker, you can guarantee exactly how it is stored. So it's perfectly safe.

Herechickychicky · 23/09/2017 01:41

I don't understand about the cream cheese frosting concerns. You can buy cakes with cream cheese frosting in loads of places; how come they are allowed?

If it's ever made illegal I will be on the first rocket to the moon :)

PersisFord · 23/09/2017 02:05

I agree. Cream cheese frosting is revolting, but I can't see how it is actually dangerous!!??
