Don't ever show your boobies - AIBU?

Observed from a distance while sitting at my 5YO DS's swimming lesson last week. A Mum sitting near me was talking to her friend and also trying to entertain her DD2 (DD1 in the pool). Little girl was no older than 4 and wearing a swimsuit. It's bloody roasting at the poolside so unsurprisingly she was complaining about being hot, so she took her swimsuit off as far as her waist. Her mum immediately pulled it back up and told her off for showing her boobies. Heard her say "you must never take your top off otherwise people can see your boobies." I thought it was really OTT. My DD is now a teenager and I would never have said anything like that to her so young - AIBU?

Christ. That's weird.

Would you say that to her now?

Jezzifishie · 05/09/2017 19:32

I remember being highly offended when I was about 8 or 9, and my younger sister was allowed to take her top off on a sunny day and I was not. (I wasn't developed at this point). I think it's a strange attitude to have when the child is so young! (I also think it's a strange attitude full stop, but that might be a rant for another day)

FenceSitter01 · 05/09/2017 19:32

Some people are naturally more conservative, some are exhibitionists and most fall mid way between the two.

Bluntness100 · 05/09/2017 19:33

Well unless the child has horribly early puberty i wasn't aware four year olds had "boobies". So yes, weird, clearly the parent has some issues.

Nothing wrong in what she said. Some people want to wear clothes. Others don't.

Boatmistress17 · 05/09/2017 19:50

Big 'no phones /tech' at our pool so they must think pervs hang out there. . Swnbu to tell her dd to keep her suit on.

The fact that you think a 4 year old taking her top off is 'exhibitionist' is a little creepy!

MrsDustyBusty · 05/09/2017 19:57

4 year olds don't have "boobies" unless they have a hormonal issue. It's a deeply inappropriate projection by that mother.

Bluntness100 · 05/09/2017 19:57

No, there's nothing inherently wrong with a 4 year old doing that, but by the time she is 7 or 8 she will be heading for puberty

Well only if it's early, puberty starts at 11 on average. Sometimes we need to let kids be kids and this is a four year old. Different if the kid was eight or nine, but four? Confused

Ttbb · 05/09/2017 20:01

Very odd phrasing. Don't pull your top down would sufficed

Sounds fine to me. Can't really see how taking the top of the swimsuit down would make her any cooler.

pictish · 05/09/2017 20:09

Don't see the big deal. Fuss about nothing.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 05/09/2017 20:09

I would have received that message as: cover up, people are trying to look at your...tits.

If that's the message people want to send to their 4 yr old...

allegretto · 05/09/2017 20:10

A bit weird. Lots of 7 year olds just wear bikini bottoms anyway

pictish · 05/09/2017 20:11

Ttbb what a shame you weren't there to advise her on the correct terminology to use with her daughter.

Sukitakeitoff · 05/09/2017 20:11

Surprised how many posters think this is ok. "Boobies" ffs?!

toffee1000 · 05/09/2017 20:12

Four year olds don't have boobies, they have nipples. In a swimming environment people are already wearing less than they would in the street. There are also public paddling pools/fountains where kids of either sex play in just pants, no top. That mother would be horrified.

pictish · 05/09/2017 20:13

Surprised how many posters think this is in any way offensive...or even interesting.

pictish · 05/09/2017 20:14

I wonder how some of you make it through a day.

Mummaofboys · 05/09/2017 20:16

How strange, who cares if a four year old wears a top or not, at that age I wouldn't look twice if she had only been in swimming bottoms and no top at all.

MadMags · 05/09/2017 20:16

Does it matter?

pictish · 05/09/2017 20:18

"It's a deeply inappropriate projection by that mother."

Aye ok then.
