One insta mum lives near me and was advertising deliveroo which I got excited about as we live quite far out so I checked it out and they don't deliver to us so it was just a staged ad but with nothing to suggest that. That annoyed me.

StillMissV · 05/09/2017 22:04

Been following this discussion with interest. I have a close family member who is an instamum. I swear it's messed with her head. She's now so used to 200 people commenting on her every more with "oh my god babe you are soooo amazing" that she is truly unbearable now. Can't stand to have anyone point out when she's being a total cow in real life. Was truly awful to me recently about my miscarriage but didn't care one jot how hurt and upset I was. Just carried on ploughing through the pregnancy announcement, gender reveal etc etc.

Not articulating this very well but there is definitely an impact on them as people IRL.

SnowBells · 05/09/2017 22:04

Huh?

How could this even have been a thread... let alone two? It's social media. If you don't like it, then unfollow.

Just like you wouldn't open a Boden catalogue if you didn't really like Boden. You wouldn't come on AIBU and complain about being done at looking at a Boden catalogue with the perfect families and children inside them, etc.

I have blogger friends (yes, one of them is a mommy blogger, but not in the UK). It's just a bloody job. They don't really deserve the vitriol of people who can't handle their 'perfect lives'.

If it's all about transparency... well, Instagram is about pictures. They're not really reviewing things, most of the time, they just go "Me in my xxx outfit". Now, when I watch movies, I might see Scarlett Johannson in an outfit that I like. But I still decide myself whether I will go out there and buy it or not.

Similarly, when you look at Instagram, you can decide to buy whatever they are wearing. Surely, you buy it because YOU like it. Why would it make a difference if they were paid for wearing it or got it given for free? It would be terribly creepy if you're only buying an item because you thought the Instagrammer bought it herself!

Quickqu · 05/09/2017 22:11

Allergy you seem very invested, I wonder why...

We do know what her husband does - he's given interviews. Hardly state secret or speculation!

I've also seen their house on Zoopla, again, no degree in investigative journalism required. They put this stuff out there themselves!

Mumsytomy · 05/09/2017 22:22

How could this even be a thread? I don't really see a problem with questioning whether you are fed up of something. We all get fed up of lots of things and moan about it, it's normal.,it's not evil. Its what humans do. TV programs get reviewed, films get reviewed, products get reviewed. You don't hold back from saying something is bad in case you hurt the designer of manufacturers feelings. You give it a bad review. You might hate a film, but somewhere else someone loves it. Your headteacher might upset you, do you mention to other mums that she was a cow or say nothing because we are no longer allowed to discuss people and have an opinion. So many social media users were described as getting it right, the right balance, and a few were called out for shameless bragging and hiding deals. That is out there for discussion.

Waitinforaflamin · 05/09/2017 22:24

snowbells not sure what instagrammers you follow but a lot of the ones who i follow write post recommending stuff or do stories doing the same. If I've followed someone because I like their style / advice / general account - it feels all a bit MLM if they are hawking stuff just because it's free or they have had some consideration given to them to do it. Some of these people are businesses earning not insignificant amounts of cash so holding them up to ethical standards on this shouldn't be an issue for anyone. You may not care, that's great - but some people obviously do. just because you couldn't give too tosses about it doesn't meant the discussion shouldn't be had. As it's been said many times here and on Instagram - you don't like the discussion, then unfollow.

StarCrossdSkys · 05/09/2017 22:25

Snow slagging off the Boden catalogue is practically a sport on here. I love those threads, probably for the same reason I can enjoy hate reading blogs. It's presented as aspirational, but I am too clever/stylish to aspire to it so that makes me feel better about myself.

Waitinforaflamin · 05/09/2017 22:25

Two not too before the grammar police come they are always lurking

Waitinforaflamin · 05/09/2017 22:27

And the rest of the mistakes Blush

LittleRen · 05/09/2017 22:45

I follow maybe 4 or 5 of these accounts, I find some interesting - mainly the ones who add a bit of interior design and fashion in the midst of the parenting stuff... what I don't get is how some of them (who I no longer follow) have so many followers when all they do is post photos of their kids, and have stories purely showing their kids eating, playing, sleeping, etc.

There is one in particular that does this, it's just kids kids kids, and she has almost 30k followers. I have my own kids to watch, I don't get how so many people can enjoy watching other people's children in instastories and looking at cute little square pictures of them?? It baffles me!! Each to their own though.

Wimbles101 · 05/09/2017 23:11

Have to agree re MoD - they've just been on one long holiday all summer! How do you afford that on a midwife salary?!!!?

Wimbles101 · 05/09/2017 23:13

£150 k a year??? I didn't even know FoD worked!
They both sound terribly middle class though. What does he do?!

allaboardtheallergybus · 05/09/2017 23:15

you've just said he (apparently) earns 150k a year so they can obviously afford it.

Also she has written a book maybe she's using her well earned earnings to take her family on holiday

Mumsytomy · 05/09/2017 23:29

To be fair FOD has always worked and had some days working from home, he's had work trips abroad and said he works in consultancy. Maybe he's had some breaks lately and maybe he's trying to turn the videos etc into an alternative job but he's never been portrayed as not working.

Mumsytomy · 05/09/2017 23:30

Allergy, I get your point, but if you paid for a holiday you would tag it like a nutter every 5 minutes. You would just have a nice holiday.

allaboardtheallergybus · 05/09/2017 23:35

this is true I think I read somewhere they got a discounted deal with Martinhal accommodation but paid for their flights and food and kids clubs but it got deleted?. Have you noticed other bloggers going to Mark Warner? They get offered a press discount and only have to #mwmoments #mwholidays now is that being transparent?

crazybabyladymaybe · 05/09/2017 23:40

chill out allaboardtheallergybus

he's open about what he does. the washing machine was a freebie

dont be so naive, silly

Mumsytomy · 05/09/2017 23:45

I haven't seen that, I mainly follow much smaller accounts and it quite a community feel (ridiculous I know) but quite possibly also why this sort of discussion happens over the bigger accounts. I'm guessing it just snowballed. I remember people asking Mod where her dress came from or where the kids clothes etc and then she would say or tag them. I guess places then notice sales based on recommendations and it snowballs, but one would assume graceoleary would be doing a better job at advising and being careful not to over do it and sell out. I thought she'd bought the Miele after recommendations, the only thing that makes me think that the comments on here were right, is the lack of response. The complete change in stories and posts. But it is right back to what made her appealing so fair play.

WipsGlitter · 06/09/2017 06:59

I guess you need to read it all with a bit of scepticism. Particularly the holidays!!

MissHenty · 06/09/2017 07:36

What did these instagrammers expect- surely this MN thread was inevitable given that any legitimate question by followers about products being freebies are either: ignored (at best); sneakily deleted by the account holder or; dismissed as being trolling (at worst).

I feel so let down. Eg Insta posters asking for recommendations on washing machines etc and readers taking the time to respond. It's disappointing that all us followers seem to just be being used as pawns in pre-arranged freebie deals. Was a single follower's recommendation about washing machines even read by MOD? Or had the freebie already been pre-arranged behind the scenes before the request for recommendations was even made? Is it that much of a total sham? I really really hope there's more transparency in future. Are advertisers going to stop working with these people once they realise the trust between poster and follower has been well and truly broken.

Mumsytomy · 06/09/2017 08:25

Misshenty, I would imagine with the continuing increase of followers, companies won't really care. And judging by a huge amount of comments (fawning?) people really don't care. Giovanna featured Susie in her stories because she had listened to her podcast (😩 I actually don't know what a podcast is?) but her face and voice made me feel really uncomfortable. Having seen that horrible way she spoke I just didn't want to hear her ever again! I imagine advertisers will just carry on, especially FOD as he goes next level with effort! But maybe there will be issues over how many advertisers you work with?

MissHenty · 06/09/2017 08:47

Yes agree about feeling uncomfortable hearing from SV. She was just so horrible about such a huge collection of people. Expect GF hasn't seen how awful SV was because SV clearly thought better of showing her true colours and swiftly deleted her insta stories.

MuftyMay · 06/09/2017 09:32

As luck would have it, they have just filed their accounts at Companies House. Judging by the limited information on there, it looks like they have paid themselves about 90k (after tax) in the last accounting period. that's on top of their day jobs.

MuftyMay · 06/09/2017 09:38

MOD and FOD that is.

allaboardtheallergybus · 06/09/2017 10:12

MuftyMay - you've just lowered the tone and reputation of MumsNet.

This thread now stinks of jealousy and boredom who has the time to go and search for someone's taxable earnings?! Instagrammers earn money through advertising, it's an advertising platform a free app you download and look at. Both MOD and FOD have book deals so why can't they be worthy of earning this extra income, they have 4 children I'm sure they're sensiblely saving for their future. Thy don't flash their cash around, they seem to lead very ordinary lives. How crass to pull people apart on their success it's so bitter and twisted.
