Lead story on News at 10 was Bruce Forsyth dies, with tributes and analysis lasting over 10 minutes.
In other news... multiple murders in Spain from terrorist attacks...

Yes - much as I loved Bruce and much as it's a very sad loss, there is so much else going on that I think right now warrants more attention/time.

The bbc has been covering Spain all day. It's just 10 minutes. And not even happy news.

Man much beloved by nation that many recall shaped family Saturday nights. Death announced this afternoon.

Terrible event that happened in Spain that despite everything hasn't had any development in new formation since early today. There isn't currently anything new to add.

StatueInTheSky · 18/08/2017 22:21

well there's been five minutes so far on the spanish attacks, and continuing...

happy now?

Viviennemary · 18/08/2017 22:21

I thought the same and switched over to ITV. And when they said on BBC and now for other news and started reporting on Spain I thought how dreadful.

UrsulaPandress · 18/08/2017 22:22

Meh. At least the Bruce news had been updated from earlier with more footage.

Watch a different channel.

MeltorPeltor · 18/08/2017 22:23

I was more shocked they'd rolled out an hour's TV special on BBC 1. Tonight.

Time4adrink · 18/08/2017 22:25

Completely understand why Brucie is news - just think it is ill-judged as the most important story.

Anyway, thanks for my first biscuit.

SnowiestMountain · 18/08/2017 22:25

I suspect the 1 hour special had been prepared for quite some time...

ComingUpTrumps · 18/08/2017 22:27

Me too, Meltor - how had they managed to get the material gathered and edited so quickly, considering he passed away so recently? I wonder if, because he was very ill, the news channels had been preparing themselves for it in a way.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 18/08/2017 22:27

They are talking about Barcelona again now OP.....

In today's world of 24-hour rolling news, the order of stories on the evening news doesn't work in quite the same way as it once did. The lead story is not necessarily the biggest story of the day any more; it might just as easily be the newest of the big stories.

The Spain story has been covered extensively all day with updates (even though the story hasn't really moved on) and a lot of detailed analysis and comment on every TV and radio news programme - I've been working from home today and I've heard most of them. The Forsyth story only broke a couple of hours ago, so has been bumped up the news agenda.

I quite often see/hear people complaining that the lead story on the 10 o'clock news isn't the most important story of the day, but I think we just need to understand that the evening news doesn't fulfil quite the same function as it once did and is put together slightly differently.

Scribblegirl · 18/08/2017 22:27

I felt rather torn. I can see both sides.

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 18/08/2017 22:28

Everyone famous has a pre written obituary and reel.

TSSDNCOP · 18/08/2017 22:29

The thing is if you're the Editor you're looking for News. Spain has no new News. Bruce, longest ever serving TV host has died this afternoon - that's this afternoons new News.

UrsulaPandress · 18/08/2017 22:29

Whole departments are devoted too obituaries in both the print and screen media.

HumphreyCobblers · 18/08/2017 22:29

I am always surprised at the disproportionate amount of time the news gives to the death of actors and entertainers.

This is not to say it should not be reported of course.

TheLegendOfBeans · 18/08/2017 22:29

There has been a BBC retrospective/obituary programme waiting for release (unpleasant way to put it) on the life of Brucie since he basically quit Strictly.

Ankleswingers · 18/08/2017 22:30

YABU.

CoughLaughFart · 18/08/2017 22:32

Look at all the suspiciously quick to appear tributes to Prince Phillip when he retired. You're not telling me those were knocked up the day he announced it.

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 18/08/2017 22:32

Agree with you OP. I was at work all day, got home, had dinner, put my kids to bed, did some more work and then wanted to see everything about Spain on the ten o'clock news - and switched over..
