To think Speedos don't make him gay?

So I've developed a bit of a liking for a man I see swimming at my gym. We've exchanged nods and hellos as I see him quite a bit, but nothing beyond that.

I was telling a friend about him and made a comment about how good he looks in his Speedos. She sort of laughed and said, 'Okaaay... I think you're barking up the wrong tree there'. Long story short, she thought the fact that he wears Speedos means he must be gay.

Is it me or is that a bit of a lazy stereotype? I know they're popular with gay men, but surely it's not unusual for someone who swims regularly to wear them? It's not like he was dancing on a podium in a pink sparkly pair.

Of course he could be gay; as I say, we've barely spoken. But is friend being a bit daft to say I shouldn't even bother?

A speedo is the best swimming costume for a man who is actually swimming rather than just mucking about in water. Anything else creates drag. I assume the reason most men don't wear them in the UK is that they care to much about how they look to wear optimal clothing.

Or he might just holiday in France a lot. There are lots of reasons for speedos for actual swimming, before you get to gay.

My DH wears them as he's a serious swimmer. He's almost certainly not gay. If he is, he hides it well.

Fair point. Though it could still be a fashion issue, i.e. caring about looks may not be about attractiveness, they just feel a need to dress like the herd.

They are not flattering but if you are a serious swimmer you don't want flappage from your trunks.

I know quite a few gay men but couldn't tell you what they wear in the pool.

My DH is forrin and they all wear Speedos where he's from. Whether it's at the beach or the pool. Doesn't make my DH or the rest of the male population of his country gay!!

At my gym/ pool all the swimmers on the local team, and the water polo players wear speedos.

It is the proper gear for their sport. Nothing to do with sexuality.

My husband wears speedos. He's definitely not gay! He's a really good swimmer though so they are the best thing to wear. He also has a cracking bod so looks pretty good in them

Smeaton We were always told red bootlaces meant you were gay too - one red, one yellow - fine. Both red - gay. And I agree with the right ear being the 'gay' ear.

Nobody mentioned Speedos though.

I'm gay. I haven't ever worn Speedos, for swimming or any other activity for that matter.
