Mystery box in loft

Recently we bought a new house and I jokingly said about finding treasure up in the loft, sent DP up there to have a look and low and behold...a single box (see attached pic).

At the time I was 39 weeks pregnant and as it was only us 2 in the house at the time we decided it was for the best that he didn't go walking around on the dodgy looking boards to go see what was in the box.

Since then we've had DD and the box has remained up there forgotten until reading the safe thread just reminded me!

Can anyone make out what it says on the box, or recognises the markings on it? DP is reluctant to go up there on his own and look because of the spiders and ghosts structural integrity of the boards, so I'm trying to persuade him to get a friend round to help!

Why can't you go up right now and tell me what's in it

RainbowPastel · 14/08/2017 22:43

Looks like a wooden packing crate. It's probably empty.

Ohwoolballs · 14/08/2017 22:45

It'll be retro Christmas decorations (I hope!)

QOD · 14/08/2017 22:46

Oh god
We've finally cracked the safe and now theirs a frigging crate

😭🔫

Waddlelikeapenguin · 14/08/2017 22:46

Looks like a wooden tea chest - watch the metal edges theycan be very sharp

happyelf · 14/08/2017 22:46

We had wooden crates like that when we moved into my childhood home around 35 years ago. It's probably just been forgotten about during someone's house move but I'd definitely have to open it

halfbuffy · 14/08/2017 22:47

DP is refusing...he says that banging about in the loft will wake the baby and he doesn't wholeheartedly trust me to hold the ladder!

Do you think it looks wooden? I didn't know if it was cardboard because there were no wooden slats like normal wooden boxes?

BumWad · 14/08/2017 22:47

What was in the safe QOD I got bored

thebigbluedustbin · 14/08/2017 22:47

OPEN THAT RIGHT NOW.

Sorry for shouting.

ElizabethLemon · 14/08/2017 22:47

Omg QOD what was in the safe??

MVLipwig · 14/08/2017 22:48

You head up now and tell us! No one can stand the anticipation after Kyle

JeReviens · 14/08/2017 22:48

What actually was in the safe? Please save me having to read it through!

loaferloveforyou · 14/08/2017 22:48

Can you not make some sort of pulley device to pull it out if your DP is afraid of creepy crawlies the integrity of the structure?

loaferloveforyou · 14/08/2017 22:49

JeRivens a crumpled up old napkin

ReinettePompadour · 14/08/2017 22:49

It looks wooden to me. I think you need to get it down. It might have wine inside or maybe rum. Grin

babynugget · 14/08/2017 22:49

Also a coin worth £15!!!!

Narnia72 · 14/08/2017 22:49

A brown crumpled napkin in the safe. Dear God please just open this without the drama!

SnowiestMountain · 14/08/2017 22:49

The safe was empty!! And now we all move on to 'the box' Grin

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 14/08/2017 22:49

Looks like the word "ales" in the top right corner but the markings won't be any indication of what's inside. Someone had to stand on those boards to get the box up there in the first place so I doubt things are unstable. Are you unable to get up there yourself?

Oddish · 14/08/2017 22:49

Looks upside down so it's definitely got something trapped underneath/inside it 😮

But it's probably spare hangers.

x2boys · 14/08/2017 22:50

Yeah it looks like an old tea crate

PollyFlint · 14/08/2017 22:51

I'm fully confident it's a severed head.

PotOfYoghurt · 14/08/2017 22:51

Hooray a new box to open!

halfbuffy · 14/08/2017 22:51

This may be over much sooner than the crate...

I said he had the pressure of mumsnet on him now...DP is going up!
