Mystery box in loft

Recently we bought a new house and I jokingly said about finding treasure up in the loft, sent DP up there to have a look and low and behold...a single box (see attached pic).

At the time I was 39 weeks pregnant and as it was only us 2 in the house at the time we decided it was for the best that he didn't go walking around on the dodgy looking boards to go see what was in the box.

Since then we've had DD and the box has remained up there forgotten until reading the safe thread just reminded me!

Can anyone make out what it says on the box, or recognises the markings on it? DP is reluctant to go up there on his own and look because of the spiders and ghosts structural integrity of the boards, so I'm trying to persuade him to get a friend round to help!

Come on op, you need to make up for the safe disappointment!

Eminybob · 14/08/2017 23:03

X post. Rubbish Sad

loaferloveforyou · 14/08/2017 23:04

It was fun while it lasted Grin

SnickersWasAHorse · 14/08/2017 23:05

Wooden tea chest. Very commonly used for packing not so long ago.
I'd be surprised if it was sealed though.

ArcheryAnnie · 14/08/2017 23:06

Keep it in the loft for if you ever move, then fill it with Halloween decorations - Asda do a nice foam severed leg for about £3 - to delight the next owners of the house.

halfbuffy · 14/08/2017 23:07

Part of me sort of wants to repurpose it into some pointless furniture now...by the looks of the inside it might be too gross though?

Applauds OP for at least solving it fast! Grin

halfbuffy · 14/08/2017 23:09

Hahaha Archery can you imagine the mumsnet thread for that?? That would definitely be entertaining!

What, no treasure? Sigh. At least I can go to bed now.....

When I was little my mum got me a tea chest for a table to have tea parties with my toys. Loved it!

TattyCat · 14/08/2017 23:19

Op, the chest is made of ply and you will probably make a tidy sum on ebay for it. Just saying...

They're relatively hard to come by depending where you live, so please don't chuck it out. Someone will love that ugly box, trust me...

halfbuffy · 14/08/2017 23:24

Oh really Tatty? Even if there's no lid to it? DP has also said it seemed like it might be quite damp and not to get too excited about the possibility of making it into a tea party table!

golfin · 14/08/2017 23:24

OP, you're rubbish at this, 4 day wait is the minimum.

user1495832265 · 14/08/2017 23:29

Grin golfin

MrsOverTheRoad · 14/08/2017 23:33

But I want to see the candles and plates!

TattyCat · 14/08/2017 23:38

They don't have lids. I don't know why, but they don't!

Anyway, if it's not particularly 'aged' then age it with some used tea bags. You might get 99p, 9.00 for it or 90.00 for it. Ebay's a funny old place and a bit unpredictable, but it's not doing anything sitting in your loft, is it?!!

halfbuffy · 14/08/2017 23:41

I might pop it on eBay then and see what happens! How strange that they don't have lids as well...seems like it would be difficult to stack them?

I don't know - perhaps when originally packed they did have lids but once opened they can never return... (ooooooooh!).

If it's in the loft and not in the way then list it for whatever you feel is right for as long as you like. Someone, eventually will buy it. They just do!

PyongyangKipperbang · 15/08/2017 00:29

The safe thread finally got resolved?! Where?!

viques · 15/08/2017 00:31

When we moved I found real treasure, real honest to goodness gold, yes siree! I was crawling on the swirly bedroom carpet pulling it off the gripper rods so we could get rid of the hideous thing when all of a sudden I felt an excruciating pain in my knee, I thought I had knelt on a nail, but when I looked there it was, gold, real gold, embedded in my knee . A gold crown, that's a dental crown, not a royal one. Bloody hurt too. But it was gold. Still have it in a jar somewhere.

PyongyangKipperbang · 15/08/2017 00:31

Six me too!

I spent the princely sum of £1.50 on a box of glassware I didnt want from an auction as they were all wrapped in sheets of newspaper from 1979. Donated the glassware to the charity shop and spent an happy afternoon reading the paper which was almost complete!

And YY to selling it, tea chests are really in demand.

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuck · 15/08/2017 05:53

Well I'm glad I didn't stay up for that! 😂
