I'm actually speechless 😶

Natsku · 16/08/2017 08:03

The vice documentary was really good but also really disturbing.

I've been so many people saying that the counter-protesters didn't have permits but from what I read they did - does anyone know the truth about that? (not that it really matters but I'm embroiled in an argument against Nazi-defenders and I like to throw facts at them)

FantasticButtocks · 16/08/2017 08:06

Just watched some of it Shock Shock

He is disgusting. Vile.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 16/08/2017 08:10

Yes I too have wondered all along what Trump really thinks about his golden girl marrying and converting to Judaism. But like many racists he professes to have 'Jews and African Americans etc. as friends' so he can't possibly be racist.
I read somewhere that Ivanka and Jared are away at the moment - hope they are keeping up with the news.

BiglyBadgers · 16/08/2017 08:16

A small kernel of joy. Obama's tweet quoting Mandela is now the most retweeted tweet ever, which I have no doubt is pissing Trump off no end. Grin

TheNorthWestPawsage · 16/08/2017 08:22

Apolgies if this has already been posted.

Monday night, Justin Moore, the Grand Dragon for the Loyal White Knights of Ku Klux Klan, said he was glad Heyer died in the attack.

badbadhusky · 16/08/2017 08:23

Wonder what Ivanka and Jared make of all this? He must have hated it when she converted

You have to wonder if there are heated discissions about whether they should go NC with her Dad. It's interesting that he's unable to joint the dots between the neonazis and his own grandchildren being a target if he continues to stoke this fire. Still, I feel the "appeal" of Russia and Trumps inclination towards Putin et al is becoming clearer - he really shares the same world view.

Roussette · 16/08/2017 08:26

The thing is with Trump, he will never say anything against anyone who likes him. The neo-nazis, KKK etc and their ilk like him. He is so fucked up that that's all he thrives on - being liked - whatever that person may stand for.

A lot of the Press don't like him. Hollywood doesn't like him. That's why he takes side swipes at them at every single opportunity. At his press conference yesterday he kept saying fake news fake news fake news.

It must've really got to him that Obama's Charlottsville tweet is the 2nd most liked tweet in Twitter's history. This type of thing enrages him so then he comes out and does a press conference unscripted - the true Donald.

In the long and tortured history of a nation still trying to work through its complicated story on race, Trump's meltdown will stand out, as a moment ripped from the darkest pages of history and transposed into the 21st Century

Roussette · 16/08/2017 08:34

Addendum
Obama's tweet is now the most liked tweet ever

Disclaimer: I haven't listened to the podcast and also this hasn't been picked up anywhere else

Okay, so they're reporting that weapons caches were found in Charlottesville in the possession of white supremacists.

Here's something you need to know: Caches of weapons were found throughout Rwanda after the genocide.
They'd been stockpiled in places underground leading up to it.
That's the way everyone got access to machetes right away -- hate radio there told them where to go to get the weapons when it started.
That's why it was so efficient and appeared so spontaneous to people observing from the outside. No one knew about the weapons caches.
So, as @amaditalks just said, this wasn't about the CSA statue, but a test run for a militia takeover of a small city.
And it should scare you, because this is how genocide is carried out.
Spencer called it a success "as a show of force." And that's what was so terrifying about it -- the amount of weaponry at their disposal.
In this case, it won't be machetes but heavy artillery. The degree to which these people are gunned is terrifying.
Listen, they want us dead, and they're on to their strategy for carrying it out. This is not about speech and never has been.
It's about genocide. They're stockpiling the means to carry it out, and anyone who gave them a platform can get fucked.
"Who's reporting this?"

The governor of VA Terry McAuliffe says it on the Pod Save the People podcast tonight.
Of course I'm being accused of fear-mongering. Listen, the governor of VA reported weapons caches on today's Pod Save the People.
Apologies, it's yesterday's bonus episode of Pod Save the People.

So it's been out overnight, and the media did not register it's significance. I'm not surprised.

Gov Terry McAuliffe: "They had battering rams and we had picked up different weapons that they had stashed around the city,”

I just got comment back from Virginia State Police. They say, contra McAuliffe, no caches of weapons were recovered.

Len M Nichols @LenMNichols
Police might lie if they don't want fascists to know they found their caches. I definitely agree this was a trial run of something. What?

[So the police have denied it, which I think is reassuring but I'm not sure why the governor would say these things if they weren't true. I'm sceptical that they were planning a genocide but if they did have caches of weapons, that is worrying.]

TheNorthWestPawsage · 16/08/2017 08:45

Donald Trump - how can you even look your grandchildren in the eye?

This is what the Nazis did to Congregation Beth-El in Charlottesville. This is who the president is apologizing for.

Mr. President, they poured lighter fluid on a girl in a wheelchair & swung fire at her. Mr. President, my friends had to fight them off.

I don't think it's a great idea to joke about 45 dying right now

Agreed. When you stop and think about who might assassinate him and what the implications are it's chilling, and also probably counterproductive. As a wise woman once said 'they go low, we go high'.

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 16/08/2017 09:05

Fantastic thread

I follow @Harryslaststand on Twitter, he's a WW2 vet that writes for The Guardian. He wrote this the other day about the similarities between now and the thirties.

Last night he tweeted

"I think America has to accept that their President is a fascist and all who serve him are now enabling fascism". #DonaldTrump

He's not wrong is he, that press conference Shock Trump didn't just blame the left equally he blamed them more.

Any republicans who are not fascists need to declare it now, or they are just as bad and condoning this travesty of a president.

squoosh · 16/08/2017 09:10

Any republicans who are not fascists need to declare it now, or they are just as bad and condoning this travesty of a president.

But declaring it is just empty rhetoric if they're still willing to support Trump's presidency in practical ways.

Fekko · 16/08/2017 09:15

So does trump ever meet his son inlaws parents? Will he attend his grandkids bar/bat mitzvah?

Fekko · 16/08/2017 09:16

I missed Obama tweet. Anyone care to share?

squoosh · 16/08/2017 09:16

You have to wonder if there are heated discissions about whether they should go NC with her Dad.

Doubt it. Kushner is more like Trump than unlike him. He will be willing to turn a blind eye to the anti semitism as long as being part of this administration benefits his ambitions.

Lweji · 16/08/2017 09:22

Breaking crazy.

It would be fun if not tragic.

user1497863568 · 16/08/2017 09:23

There are some very disturbing questions about the level of complicity before and why 70 million Europeans died in that big mess... I don't know about Kushner but others seem to be egging it on.

It's really distressing.

BiglyBadgers · 16/08/2017 09:29

But declaring it is just empty rhetoric if they're still willing to support Trump's presidency in practical ways.

Agree, actions speak louder than words. Condemning means nothing if you sit in a position of power and do nothing to actually stop it.

InigoTaran · 16/08/2017 09:34

Best tweet of the day - so far

Barack Obama now has the most liked tweet of all time. If Donald Trump wants to break this record he need only tweet two words - I resign.
