I watched that Vice documentary last night. Extraordinary. The reporter and her team did a fantastic job getting that access and catching that stuff on the camera. I doubt Trump will ever see it, but would it give him pause to think that some of these Nazis think he's a race traitor for 'letting' Ivanka marry a Jew?
So, so depressing. Surely this must be a turning point for many of the more moderate Republicans?
Having said that, I'm not surprised by the number of Jewish and black Americans who are saying 'Come on, this isn't new, what's new is that it's being said so openly - the US has always been a racist country'. After WW2, West Germany tackled the issue of racism and antisemitism head on and attempted to root it out with education. They changed the law so it's a criminal offence to display the swastika or do a Nazi salute or deny the Holocaust. Obviously they didn't succeed in rooting racism out entirely, because it's a cancer that seems to grow in all societies, but at least they tried. I don't think the US has made the same effort at all, and now we see the consequences.
Just as with Brexit, Trump's election seems to have encouraged a deeply intolerant, xenophobic, racist, bigoted, ignorant-and-proud-of-it group to start saying publicly what they never stopped saying privately, and it's vile.
