To ask your experience taking morning after pill

I always said 'If you really wanted to remember to take the pill, then you would'. Here I am having forgot to take the pill for 2 days and I had sleepy morning sex today and it wasn't protected so I'm off today to a sexual health clinic to get the MAP.

Is it just a pill you take and that's that? Any side effects ? I'm quite embarrassed.

Don't be embarrassed.
I've taken it a few times in my youth. One pill with water.
No side effects for me.
Never caught.
Good luck x

Purplemac · 08/08/2017 10:59

I've taken about four or five throughout my late teens and early 20s...I didn't suffer any side effects that I can remember, had no problems whatsoever.

Don't be embarrassed. It exists for this exact reason.

Alicia555 · 08/08/2017 11:01

I suffered no side effects taking the map

user1497357411 · 08/08/2017 11:02

I had to take them twice, but that was due to me being ill. I won't be too graphic but suffice to say I had taken my contraceptive pill as normally on both occasions, but they didn't stay in. I had no side effects what so ever. On the one occasion we had to wait untill I stopped being ill before I could take the morning after pill, because nothing I ate stayed down, so it is also a "a couple of days after pill".

I heard some people say the pill made them fell nauseated, but they all had to use the morning after pill as they had drunken unprotected sex, so the nausea might have been a hangover.

shirleythefamilyguy · 08/08/2017 11:05

Took it last week after a very similar situation to yours, haven't taken since I was a teenager so was very embarrassed! I'm getting some nausea and cramping but I think that might be down to having messed up my pill schedule (I'm on the mini pill) rather than the MAP itself. I don't remember any side effects from the one I took all those years ago either.

PippaPug · 08/08/2017 11:06

I felt very sick after mine (no alcohol the night before so it was defo the pill) but lasted a few hours and that was all
No need to be embarrassed!

wonderstuff · 08/08/2017 11:07

I have taken it twice and I got mild nausea, made me feel a bit rubbish for a day.

gamerchick · 08/08/2017 11:07

You can get it from a chemist you know, you don't have to go to a clinic.

it messed my cycle up for a few month but I wasn't on the pill so you may escape that.

Changingagain · 08/08/2017 11:08

I took it a couple of times in my teens, it was one pill, no side effects.
I also took it last year, in my 30's with DS with me. I felt a bit silly, like I was too old to be making mistakes but contraception fails some times (it was a broken condom for us) and the pharmacist knows that so you really shouldn't feel embarrassed by it.

MaidOfStars · 08/08/2017 11:09

Taken it a few times. Never got any side effects, apart from maybe a bit of queasiness but that was plausibly in my head because of my expectation.

MsBeeSting · 08/08/2017 11:09

Thank you I feel better. My poor baby neice has got to be brought to the clinic with as her mummy and daddy are working today.
I was on the implant for 3 years but didn't get another as I plan to get pregnant before 3 years but didn't want the trauma of getting one in and out again if I wasn't using for 3 years

I've taken it a few times with absolutely no problems. You can either get it for free in your GP surgery (though would prob have to wait for tomorrow for an appointment) or else go to any pharmacy and pay around £30.

MaidOfStars · 08/08/2017 11:10

Also, no need for embarrassment. And perhaps rethink any dogmatic positions on women who have contraception failure (for whatever reason) Wink

talonofthehawk · 08/08/2017 11:12

You'll be okay OP.
Well done on being so responsible.

Oh and go to Superdrug if you can, they have a £13 version of the one you can take within 72 hours and the pharmacist I spoke to was lovely.

LadyLance · 08/08/2017 11:14

I've taken it 3 times due to condoms breaking, twice I got it from a doctor (free), the third time I paid for it from a pharmacy as I was on holiday and it just seemed easier.

Whoever you speak to will need to ask a few questions, mostly to determine you're safe to take the MAP and you're not potentially already pregnant. There are two kinds, and they may ask questions to determine which brand is best for you to take. The purpose of these questions is not to be judgemental, just to make sure giving you the MAP is appropriate.

The actual pill is one pill with water, and you should take it ASAP. The first two times I took it, I felt fine, but it messed up my cycle a little. The most recent time, I was also hungover, and I felt really really sick, but fortunately I didn't throw up.

If you're sick within 3 hours of taking the pill, you can go and see a doctor who will give you another pill and an antiemetic to take with it so you can keep it down.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 08/08/2017 11:23

I was 18 and visiting my boyfriend, who I was in a LDR with. The condom split. I had to register as a temporary patient with his GP, before you could get it OTC. I was mortified but he was lovely. I felt a bit queasy for the day but that may have been my fear of getting pregnant. The most embarrassing part was that we had to ask BF's dad for a lift and he (affectionately) took the piss for the rest of my visit.

MsBeeSting · 08/08/2017 12:00

I'm going to my local abacus sexual health clinic I don't think I have to pay, hope not anyway as I definitely can't afford £30 for the MAP now Confused

abbsisspartacus · 08/08/2017 12:04

otterlynutty · 08/08/2017 12:15

Have taken it once, I felt a bit sicky but didn't actually throw up.

otterlynutty · 08/08/2017 12:15

It brought my cycle on but nothing else.

MsBeeSting · 08/08/2017 13:33

Update:

I apparently don't need it. I take my pill at 9pm each night. I last took it Sunday. So no pill Monday, no pill Tuesday. Had sex this morning. She said I'm covered?
