To think Gove has his uses?

I know he was terrible in education. He seemed to despise teachers and never to go to them for answers.

But I understand he did better at prison reform.

And the announcement about cars is brilliant.

I am worried about myself now.

Do you also find him attractive?

ringle · 06/08/2017 17:13

:)))

Ouch! That would be a big step....

Attractive???????????? GrinGrinWink (no way by the way!)

DancingLedge · 06/08/2017 17:14

Umm, isn't our prison system in a dreadful state? Dangerous for staff and inmates? Riots? Yep, sounds like Gove's been there.

Phosphorus · 06/08/2017 17:16

I think he's great.

He does at least seem to care about what he's doing. He takes an intellectual intetest, and responds decently to letters and people raising issues.

Not everyone will agree with his viewpoints, but that can hardly be helped.

He isn't like the hobby politicians (Cameron types). He's more like Gordon Brown, in terms of actually trying to do the decent thing.

Hello Michael.Grin

SabineUndine · 06/08/2017 17:18

Dancing the mess was created by Grayling. Gove spent a lot of time fixing it and was by many accounts excellent at that job, reversing a lot of bad decisions.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/08/2017 17:18

Although I must say. In a political sense you're about as useful as a used condom

ilovesooty · 06/08/2017 17:18

If I were to ponder on any possible uses Gove might have I suspect I'd be be banned if not prosecuted.

allegretto · 06/08/2017 17:18

Wasn't the announcement just copied from the French? In any case, surely anyone can make an announcement. The hard part is working out how to implement it.

SabineUndine · 06/08/2017 17:19

I should add I'm a Labour Party member, they're both Tories but some are better than others.

Icantreachthepretzels · 06/08/2017 17:19

Let me guess ... you're not a teacher?

CauliflowerSqueeze · 06/08/2017 17:19

I don't really have a problem with him making GCSEs and A levels a lot more content heavy. I do have an issue with the lack of training and speed with which they have been brought in. We needed another couple of years with lots of specimen papers.

Bluntness100 · 06/08/2017 17:20

I suspect he is good at what he does, even though it might not always seem so. However the whole boris debacle was appalling from him and his wife and I think it will live in people's minds for quite a long time.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 06/08/2017 17:24

I also resent the fact that he admits he was a complete dick at school in his French lessons and apologised to his teacher. But he doesn't quite understand that kids these days are still dicks. But their teachers nowadays have their salary dependent on their success. Gove's teachers just had to manage him and his mates (in their small class in their expensive independent school).

CauliflowerSqueeze · 06/08/2017 17:25

Yes the backstabbing was terrible Bluntness I agree.

Phosphorus · 06/08/2017 17:25

I think he tried his best in Education.

He wanted the same standard at state schools, as you'd get at private ones, but he knew he had a limited time in which to get anything through.

It was necessary that standards should be raised, most average 16 year olds could get a good grade GCSE in the old system, there was little except poor teaching to stop an average 16 year old getting an A/B grade. That rendered the exams fairly useless.

Given time, I reckon he'd have dealt with the SN education system too.

Raising standards for the majority/mainstream was about all he could do in the time he had.

The fashion for ministers to be replaced at the whim of the press is a bit crap, don't you think?

HoneyIshrunktheBiscuit · 06/08/2017 17:30

Dp used to work for MOJ and everybody hated him there also.

He's too academically clever that's the issue.

noblegiraffe · 06/08/2017 17:38

He's a reckless twat who thinks he knows better than anyone else.

He gives a good appearance of listening, then does what he wants anyway.

He has a poor record of considering the long-term implications of his actions. See: education, Brexit.

annandale · 06/08/2017 17:42

I mistrust journalists in politics. Journalists are good at getting passionately interested in one topic for a week, and in finding an angle to argue. Unfortunately an Oxbridge degree fosters the same qualities (I have one). Government is not journalism.

ExplodedCloud · 06/08/2017 17:44

The announcement about cars was a 2007 international accord that Gove announced for the 3rd time. It isn't something he's done at all Confused

user1484311384 · 06/08/2017 17:46

Being on the receiving end as an educational professional, I despise this man, bringing his pet prejudices into children's education is so inappropriate. As professionals, we have to justify, justify, justify every professional practice, these politicians cruise through everything with never a thought to the chaos they leave behind. I read that actually it was Murdoch that lobbied for him to be brought back into the fold, says it all really!!!

ringle · 06/08/2017 17:48

In education you need someone who accepts that the system can never be greater than the multiple of the quality of teachers and the conditions in which they work.

I don't think he grasped that. He seems like the sort of person who might not recognise the non-intellectual qualities that make a teacher good (stamina, love of children, acquired wisdom, emotional intelligence, etc).

I think that's why he was dreadful, he didn't understand what teaching is.

OP posts:
ringle · 06/08/2017 17:52

Exploded-I did not know that.;)

I'm not saying he has vision. Just that he has his uses and qualities. Like knowing everyone hates him already so pissing off the car industry doesn't matter to him....

He isn't like the hobby politicians

He is a hobby politician, like his mate Johnson, he's a tenth rate newspaper columnist playing at being a politician.
