Thompson cancelled wedding flight

Next February I'm getting married and We are taking our adult aged children with us. I've just found out that Thompson has cancelled the flight and told us we can travel the same day from Manchester instead of Birmingham. We paid the extra to have premium seats so had 2 window seats and three idle seats together. Now the only seats we can have mean we are split up and have no choice in this. Thompson say it's just tough luck really and nothing they can do. It was hard enough getting everyone to have the same holiday dates as it was and this has been booked since February. I'm reeling very upset at the attitude that it's unlucky and expecting us to travel an extra 2 hours to the airport especially as one of our dons doesn't finish work till 8 pm the night before. As the premium seats cost 300 extra each if feels like we aren't getting what we paid for. Any thoughts ?

Surely they should refund the additional cost of the premium seats if nothing else?! I'd specifically ask for that in a formal written complaint.

PotteringAlong · 01/08/2017 17:26

Are you still getting premium seats though, just not together? They've given you 7 months notice, it's not an unreasonable amount of time.

Alicia555 · 01/08/2017 17:26

Yes they should refund you the the premium seats if they cannot accomdate your seating arrangement. Do you live in Birmingham? Maybe some compo for the inconvenience and cost to get to Manchester too. What a ball ache!

witchofzog · 01/08/2017 17:26

I don't know what your rights are but it is certainly very unfair. I would imagine you should at least be refunded the cost of the premium seats seeing as you are not getting what you paid for. Perhaps take to Twitter and Facebook. This may get more results for you

Supermagicsmile · 01/08/2017 17:26

Ask for a refund for the additional cost!

Cavamad · 01/08/2017 17:28

It's still premium seating just all split up. Part of paying for premium it selecting where you sit and in our case together not being split up.

Surely they've given you the option of a refund or flying from Manchester? Is there no other airline flying from Birmingham?

Cavamad · 01/08/2017 17:30

The only option is going to the Dominican Republic as we have to travel that day due to leave. But they say there is no way of finding out what seats are free until we book fir that holiday.

NameChange30 · 01/08/2017 17:33

I suggest you insist on a full refund for the flight, and book another flight instead. There must be other flights from Birmingham that are suitable.

Do make sure you have wedding and/or travel insurance. It will be invaluable if there are any more serious problems.

happypoobum · 01/08/2017 17:38

I would cancel the whole lot and start again.

Cavamad · 01/08/2017 17:42

I think we might end up doing that and it may end up putting it offfor a year as we are tied down to that date.

Thomson's cancelled the flights we'd paid extra for. My husband complained and they put us on flights the day before (which were with BA so probably more expensive) and upgraded our apartment.
Complain again.

Aliveinwanderland · 01/08/2017 17:45

You would put your wedding off for a year because you can't sit together on the plane? Isn't that a bit extreme!

Either accept premium seating and sit separately, or have it refunded and sit together but in normal seats.

MotherOfWren · 01/08/2017 17:45

Thomson are rubbish! in my personal experience we paid for seats on a flight, we had our 3 month old baby with us and it was her first flight. We had to be moved as the tray was broken and as the person infront sat down it fell and smashed my little one right in the face (I was sitting in the seat that was meant for adults with children on lap) but they have refused to give us back the money we paid for the seats even though it wad their fault we couldn't sit there they are a joke and have lost my custom for life. Literally every person you speak to there says something different!

BlondeB83 · 01/08/2017 17:47

I would cancel and book with another company.

leghoul · 01/08/2017 17:48

I'd cancel it, get a full refund and start again

rolopolovolo · 01/08/2017 17:49

Poor thing! FYI for the future: don't use Thomson or any other travel agent. They have no clue. Worse than just booking it yourself and never cheaper.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 01/08/2017 17:49

^ this

choli · 01/08/2017 17:49

How long is the flight? Surely as adults you can survive sitting apart on a flight?

I would try to make Thomson pay for transportation from Birmingham to Manchester, and also on the return.

LizB62A · 01/08/2017 17:51

Unless you're actually getting married ON THE PLANE, then what does it matter? Your children are adults, so there's no safeguarding issue.

JumboLina · 01/08/2017 17:54

Why does it matter if you're not glued next to each other for a few hours?

Funny priorities... are you really sure getting married is the right thing to do? Confused

Dailystuck71 · 01/08/2017 18:01

Can't you just sit apart? It's not that far or certainly not what I'd call long haul plus you are all adults. Read, chill and enjoy a drink. You don't need to sit together surely.

runsmidgeOMG · 01/08/2017 18:03

Aww bless you I get that it would be disappointing and I'd hate it but for a few hours it really isn't worth cancelling the wedding. Imagine going through the hullaballoo of everyone syncing time off again some B list guests may not be happy having leave dictated 2 years running
Order a good movie, put in your earphones, snooze and see each other in paradise !

Have a great time !!

nauticant · 01/08/2017 18:04

Thompson are utterly shit. My experience with them was that 17 hours before flying they called to say they hadn't arranged flights or hotel accommodation for one family member so they couldn't go. Told all kinds of lies about accommodation at the hotel not being possible to book (I was looking on the Internet at the time and plenty of rooms were available). Continued to lie all through the holiday I'd cobbled together under my own steam and then refused to provide a refund. In the end the only way to get the refund was to take them to court. At least I had the satisfaction of having the judge confirm that the company had been willing to lie whenever it suited them.

I now make sure that whenever I get the chance I tell people to avoid this disgrace of a company.

MaryShelley1818 · 01/08/2017 18:08

Thomson cancelled our flights with 2mths notice...annoying but such us life.
I understand being disappointed you can't sit together (me and DH were split up on Honeymoon flight) but you wouldn't seriously cancel your wedding over not sitting together? That seems ludicrously OTT...
