Removed from my flight as it was overbooked .....

Aibu. To be ridiculously angry and fed up because I didn't think that "overbooking" a flight existed...

Due to fly to Croatia today, 7.25am. With two female friends (all professionals in our late 20s). Tried to check in yesterday but it wouldn't allow us to. Tried and tried. In the end we just decided to get to the airport early and check in.

Printed our boarding passes and then headed through security, had breakfast and went to the gates and joined he queue.

On passing over our cards and passports we were told we had to stand aside. We were not told why. Everyone walked past us one by one.

Finally they told us "this flight is overbooked and only two of you can fly, the third person can't" they explained: albeit rather abruptly and with little apology, that there was nothing to be done. So between us we had to choose who stayed and who went, we were assured the third person would be out on the next flight. I stayed.

I then have a lengthy walk back through to departures, found a help desk, explained, waited... was escorted through security (with others who'd missed flights) and then left to queue in the "EasyJet queue". My friends flew to Croatia and messaged me before I even got to the front TWO HOURS of queing: I needed the loo, had no water and quite frankly was losing patience.

I knew there was another flight at 1pm but it said online fully booked. There are three more tomorrow. Although in my head I was very disappointed to be missing a days holiday, having to wait and fly alone, re book ferry crossings in Croatia etc etc life is what it is....

AND THEN....
I was told I couldn't wait as standby for the 1pm flight. And that they couldn't we book me for a flight for another three days THREE WHOLE DAYS as they are overbooked on all their flights to Croatia until then. Like wtf...?!?!

I went away in tears. I get one holiday a year. I haven't endless money to whittle away on taxis, food, flights.

So I sit down and look at easy jet. Tomorrow 5.55am flight is still up for sale (although I've just been told it's sold out and overbooked by 4 seats). But whatever it's £290 so I put that on my credit card.... I then pay an extra £16.99 for reserved seating and I check in and print a new boarding pass.

I go back to the front desk and explain. They've put me up overnight in a hotel: no lunch offered or snacks. Just dinner.

My issue here is tomorrow the flight is iverbooked. I have paid for speedy boarding, and for an extra leg room seat. All of which I hope to be compensated for. I will join my friends a day late and hopefully enjoy my holiday. BUT that flight is iverbooked and unless five people don't turn up then they'll be removing people from the flight. I hope to God it isn't me.

How do they get away with this?!

And EASYJET YOURE COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY INCOMPETENT.

just to add the queue was so long due to various complaints: one lady who's seat wa double booked so she was thrown off, 30 people also denied boarding S they'd downgraded to a smaller plane, a few missed flights due to the gate being changed and then not knowing, then those that were there due to overbooking. As well as the misfortinate who had simply missed their flight.

So I'm in my hotel room, bored and hungry and yes ranting!

What a nightmare, get tweeting! Ad drinking!

Oblomov17 · 25/07/2017 14:15

This is so poor. How do they get away with this?

comedycentral · 25/07/2017 14:16

That's an awful way to treat a paying customer, I have no idea how airlines manage to get away with it at all! I am sorry you are in this situation.

Funnyface1 · 25/07/2017 14:19

I'm astounded at this, absolutely unbelievable. Not much to say but masses of sympathy from me. Really hope you're lucky with the next flight.

Birdsgottaf1y · 25/07/2017 14:19

This is what puts me off booking things separately, because anyone who has booked as part of a package, isn't going to be chucked off (it would cost them too much).

We need new legislation about this. It doesn't matter that holidays aren't essential, companies should not be allowed to get away with this.

ExplodedCloud · 25/07/2017 14:22

There was a BBC story about an unaccompanied 15 year old being turfed off an overbooked flight yesterday.
I think they determine who gets seats by when you check in.

bigchris · 25/07/2017 14:22

We're both flights with easy jet then? I'm amazed you'd go through this he'll again, I'd have gone home and asked for my money back

Forest2017 · 25/07/2017 14:23

I think as a package they can still do it. They tried to say it was because we checked in too late. But really it was their system that wouldn't allow us to check in.

Seeing as the hotel mini bar is empty I'm off in search of wine!

poppym12 · 25/07/2017 14:26

That's crap. Which airport are you flying from? Would they taxi you to an alternative one?

Veterinari · 25/07/2017 14:27

Good luck OP!

The good news is that you can claim compensation for you missed flight in addition to reimbursement from your insurance.

piglover · 25/07/2017 14:27

Completely disgraceful. Email CEO?

Forest2017 · 25/07/2017 14:28

I couldn't find another flight for four days even with another airline. However I'm clever enough to know they won't deny me tomorrow if I've paid extra for speedy boarding and an upgraded seat (sadly I do know it will impact someone else who's late to check in).

It's awful really. I booked this holiday 5 months ago. I only get to choose ten days holiday a year so the option of completely missing the holiday wasn't an option tbh: I need some sunshine, as well as the direct impact it would've had on my mind knowing that my friends were all there enjoying it whilst I was stuck home.

I will get money back. I'm on hold to them now. It's just atrocious and I want others to be aware. It happens with all airlines apparently even British Airways: but usually they'll have non show'ers due to knowing business tickets are sometimes not used last minute. Whereas easyJet to Split is mostly holiday goers.

Regardless it's not fair ,

I really feel for you and I would be angry too. Hope you get there ok and the rest of your trip is a happy time.

I think this whole overbooking thing is a scandal. They should just sell the number of seats - end of. If some people don't turn up then so be it. Selling over the number of actual seats is just pure greed and should be stopped imo.

lanouvelleheloise · 25/07/2017 14:32

THREE DAYS of waiting! THREE DAYS!! That is completely unacceptable. What are they thinking?!

GlitterNails · 25/07/2017 14:35

bigchris - why should she miss her entire holiday though?

It's horrendous they are able to do this. Think how many holidays they've ruined - as you can't just add more days on easily, particularly when friends are involved.

But imagine if they bumped someone trying to get to an ill loved one, or to a funeral, or their own wedding! They aren't going to look into circumstances, I assume - as that's what happened to that doctor in America.

user1492692527 · 25/07/2017 14:36

That's why I won't book with any of the cheap crap airlines any more. BA (for example, other airlines are available) are more expensive, but reliable and will do their utmost to help. Easyjet removed an underage child (15) the other day as they were overbooked. Dreadful airline.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/07/2017 14:39

My condolences. I really, really feel for you. They are scum and I hope that you are able to get some compensation.

Eve · 25/07/2017 14:40

they all have us over a barrel and really dont care.

... good luck on getting compensation, they will delay that any way they can.

FunctionalAnatomy · 25/07/2017 14:42

What I don't understand is that you showed up to the airport early (how early?) so surely there were later people who should have been the ones to be denied boarding (if anyone was)?

It sucks that airlines do this. They should be honest about overbooking and sell "reserve" seats once plane is fully booked. So if you're number 3 on the reserved list you'd probably get on the flight, number 27 maybe not. (In other countries I've bought train tickets this way)

Itsnotwhatitseems · 25/07/2017 14:42

Which Airport are you at OP?

Argeles · 25/07/2017 14:43

That's absolutely awful. I hate Easyjet almost as much as I hate Ryanair - they have treated me like absolute shit in the past.

I really don't understand why they overbook, apart from making more money out of people. Do concert venues and football stadiums etc do this too? They could argue the same after all, that people haven't turned up and there are empty seats.

squoosh · 25/07/2017 14:45

OP that's fucking scandalous. Tweet the fuck out of this.

AntiHop · 25/07/2017 14:45

This is so out of order. I can't believe airlines are allowed to do this.

poppym12 · 25/07/2017 14:47

I'm taking my first ever easyJet flight next month...... Not exactly filled with confidence now.
