Removed from my flight as it was overbooked .....

Aibu. To be ridiculously angry and fed up because I didn't think that "overbooking" a flight existed...

Due to fly to Croatia today, 7.25am. With two female friends (all professionals in our late 20s). Tried to check in yesterday but it wouldn't allow us to. Tried and tried. In the end we just decided to get to the airport early and check in.

Printed our boarding passes and then headed through security, had breakfast and went to the gates and joined he queue.

On passing over our cards and passports we were told we had to stand aside. We were not told why. Everyone walked past us one by one.

Finally they told us "this flight is overbooked and only two of you can fly, the third person can't" they explained: albeit rather abruptly and with little apology, that there was nothing to be done. So between us we had to choose who stayed and who went, we were assured the third person would be out on the next flight. I stayed.

I then have a lengthy walk back through to departures, found a help desk, explained, waited... was escorted through security (with others who'd missed flights) and then left to queue in the "EasyJet queue". My friends flew to Croatia and messaged me before I even got to the front TWO HOURS of queing: I needed the loo, had no water and quite frankly was losing patience.

I knew there was another flight at 1pm but it said online fully booked. There are three more tomorrow. Although in my head I was very disappointed to be missing a days holiday, having to wait and fly alone, re book ferry crossings in Croatia etc etc life is what it is....

AND THEN....
I was told I couldn't wait as standby for the 1pm flight. And that they couldn't we book me for a flight for another three days THREE WHOLE DAYS as they are overbooked on all their flights to Croatia until then. Like wtf...?!?!

I went away in tears. I get one holiday a year. I haven't endless money to whittle away on taxis, food, flights.

So I sit down and look at easy jet. Tomorrow 5.55am flight is still up for sale (although I've just been told it's sold out and overbooked by 4 seats). But whatever it's £290 so I put that on my credit card.... I then pay an extra £16.99 for reserved seating and I check in and print a new boarding pass.

I go back to the front desk and explain. They've put me up overnight in a hotel: no lunch offered or snacks. Just dinner.

My issue here is tomorrow the flight is iverbooked. I have paid for speedy boarding, and for an extra leg room seat. All of which I hope to be compensated for. I will join my friends a day late and hopefully enjoy my holiday. BUT that flight is iverbooked and unless five people don't turn up then they'll be removing people from the flight. I hope to God it isn't me.

How do they get away with this?!

And EASYJET YOURE COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY INCOMPETENT.

just to add the queue was so long due to various complaints: one lady who's seat wa double booked so she was thrown off, 30 people also denied boarding S they'd downgraded to a smaller plane, a few missed flights due to the gate being changed and then not knowing, then those that were there due to overbooking. As well as the misfortinate who had simply missed their flight.

So I'm in my hotel room, bored and hungry and yes ranting!

Hope you get on with no further problems 🤞

This happened to me and DH on our honeymoon 7 years ago.

We were flying with easyJet and had checked in online, we checked our bags in at the airport and it wasn't until we got to the gate and we're just about to board that they pulled us aside and told us they'd overbooked.
They didn't give us a choice at all they just said we could not get on the plane. They said they'd chosen us as our postcode showed that we lived a few minutes away from the airport so it wouldn't have been as disruptive as it would have been for someone who lived further away!

We'd only booked one week away and the next flight wasn't for another three days and there were no other way spaces on any other airlines (school holiday time).

We missed four days of our one week honeymoon and when we got back and applied for the compensation it took six months to receive it.

I fucking hate easyJet!

Jaxhog · 26/07/2017 00:02

They will have to pay you compensation under EU laws. Not much consolation, but still worth knowing.

Good luck tomorrow!

NorthernLurker · 26/07/2017 00:11

Dd1's flight was cancelled last week after a long delay. EasyJet are refusing compensation despite the fact that it was a cancellation due to plane cock up not weather or ATC. She isn't letting it go........

Sprinklestar · 26/07/2017 00:13

That's an interesting claim re Ryanair... Honestly? I very much doubt it's true! And according to their own website, you can still be offloaded.

'Ryanair is the only airline in Europe that does not overbook its flights; therefore Ryanair has eliminated the possibility of passengers being denied boarding due to overbooking. However if for technical or immigration reasons, it becomes necessary to accommodate passengers on another flight, Ryanair will try to prioritize the needs of and minimise the delay to those passengers effected and provide compensation in line with Regulation EU261/2004.'

abilockhart · 26/07/2017 00:20

Overbooking on EasyJet is a major problem during peak times. I avoid EasyJet during the holiday season for this reason. Ryanair are a safer bet in this regard.

AuntMatilda · 26/07/2017 00:34

This is awful I agree :(

How was it decided you were the one to stay back? I hope you manage to find a way to enjoy the time alone. And also I agree tweet and share your position everywhere . I understand people cancel etc but is this really acceptable?!And reasonable? Surely you should be compensated efficiently at least.

abilockhart · 26/07/2017 00:35

Just in case anyone here is worried about being kicked off an overbooked flight:

why overbooking happens, how best to avoid being denied boarding, and your rights if you're offloaded from a flight

Justaboy · 26/07/2017 00:58

Could have sworn blind i read somewhere the other day that legislation changes are to be made to change this overbooking practice in the UK or Europe as well.

cambodianfoxhound · 26/07/2017 01:39

If you check in online you can usually avoid being bumped but I know it is not always possible to check in online. My understanding is that they then bump the lowest paid tickets first - so those who got the cheapest fares get offloaded first. They will rarely bump loyalty card holders - and almost certainly not if you have a higher status on their loyalty card. Has happened to me before but we ended up on another flight, which due to a different connection actually got us to our destination quicker. Its crap though.

Forest2017 · 26/07/2017 05:03

Well I was first through speedy boarding gates (mainly because nobody else was there) and I'm front of the line. Wish me luck.

Hope you can sue them for the cost of the rest of your missed holiday plus compensation for distress. How can they do this?

elfinpre · 26/07/2017 05:18

Fingers crossed OP, hope you get away ok this time.

cordeliavorkosigan · 26/07/2017 05:40

definitely get tweeting. and let's hope the daily mail picks this one up - great holiday story for them :)

Forest2017 · 26/07/2017 06:01

I'm off! Will update on compensation after the claim!

Mummyoflittledragon · 26/07/2017 06:01

Good luck!

Isabella70 · 26/07/2017 06:06

You should be eligible for compensation in addition to refund of expenses

europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/passenger-rights/air/index_en.htm

(Of course we may well lose this after Brexit...)

mohuzivajehi · 26/07/2017 06:14

Woo hoo!

They jolly well better refund you your extra costs.

BanyanTree · 26/07/2017 06:14

I moved back to the UK 3 years ago and I have to say one of the things that shocked me was the state of our airlines, both budget and BA. They are total shite. The whole experience from booking to flying is terrible. In fact, it is only when I started flying from the UK that I developed flight anxiety.

LadyWithLapdog · 26/07/2017 06:32

Have a nice holiday, OP. And don't let it lie when you get back.

It really shouldn't matter how much you've paid for your tickets, when you checked in, what time you turn up. You pay for them to fly you, not degrees if shit treatment they can dish out.

123MothergotafleA · 26/07/2017 06:41

I propose a boycott of all airlines for a week say!
Would really put a spanner in the works and give a clear message at the same time.
Vote with our feet, and cut out the traumatic experience of air travel at the same time. There are so many lovely places to visit here at home, Cornwall for example, or Wales/Scotland, in fact anywhere that will avoid the hell of airports and their bossy high handed security systems.
Ugh, I've talked myself into a nice sedate trip to Cornwall this summer.

Mulledwine1 · 26/07/2017 08:17

I've talked myself into a nice sedate trip to Cornwall this summer

Oooh that will be stress-free, with half the country there all at the same time.

I think I'd rather fly somewhere.

The overbooking thing is getting stupid and I'd have been incandescent if my son had been thrown off a flight.

I have only had to claim compensation once from BA but they got out of it because they said the (8 hour) delay was down to fog. Well it kind of was, but they chose which flights to prioritise and which flights to cancel. Clearly, they prioritised the long haul flights, but that was their choice and I should have got compensation, but it was computer says no. It was a few years ago now, these days I probablly would not have let it go.

On the other hand, I used to take the ferry over to the Channel Islands quite a lot and it is far from reliable. I've claimed compensation for delays twice and in both cases the money was in my account inside a week of sending them (Condor Ferries) the forms. So different.

Ijustwantaquietlife · 26/07/2017 08:32

Glad you got away op. 250 euros compensation doesn't sound like much for all the hassel!

I'm anxious about my upcoming easyJet flight to Ireland, I'm on a separate ticket to NYC....

chipscheeseandgravy · 26/07/2017 08:53

Overbooking flights is fairly common as people frequently don't turn up.
All you can do is put a claim in against the airline. Keep copies of your receipts and submit them with your claim. For a short haul flight I think the maximum compensation is about £520. You can either contact the airline directly (they are under no obligation to respond to your complaint) or you can use a company who specialise in delayed flights. They will typically take a commission of about 25-30%. Claims take about 2-3 months to complete.

Frazzled2207 · 26/07/2017 08:53

Pleased you got away. I have never had an issue with easyjet but always check in 30 days before. Do that next time.
But you've been treated appallingly. Have a nice holiday and then make sure you get it when you get back.
