Removed from my flight as it was overbooked .....

Aibu. To be ridiculously angry and fed up because I didn't think that "overbooking" a flight existed...

Due to fly to Croatia today, 7.25am. With two female friends (all professionals in our late 20s). Tried to check in yesterday but it wouldn't allow us to. Tried and tried. In the end we just decided to get to the airport early and check in.

Printed our boarding passes and then headed through security, had breakfast and went to the gates and joined he queue.

On passing over our cards and passports we were told we had to stand aside. We were not told why. Everyone walked past us one by one.

Finally they told us "this flight is overbooked and only two of you can fly, the third person can't" they explained: albeit rather abruptly and with little apology, that there was nothing to be done. So between us we had to choose who stayed and who went, we were assured the third person would be out on the next flight. I stayed.

I then have a lengthy walk back through to departures, found a help desk, explained, waited... was escorted through security (with others who'd missed flights) and then left to queue in the "EasyJet queue". My friends flew to Croatia and messaged me before I even got to the front TWO HOURS of queing: I needed the loo, had no water and quite frankly was losing patience.

I knew there was another flight at 1pm but it said online fully booked. There are three more tomorrow. Although in my head I was very disappointed to be missing a days holiday, having to wait and fly alone, re book ferry crossings in Croatia etc etc life is what it is....

AND THEN....
I was told I couldn't wait as standby for the 1pm flight. And that they couldn't we book me for a flight for another three days THREE WHOLE DAYS as they are overbooked on all their flights to Croatia until then. Like wtf...?!?!

I went away in tears. I get one holiday a year. I haven't endless money to whittle away on taxis, food, flights.

So I sit down and look at easy jet. Tomorrow 5.55am flight is still up for sale (although I've just been told it's sold out and overbooked by 4 seats). But whatever it's £290 so I put that on my credit card.... I then pay an extra £16.99 for reserved seating and I check in and print a new boarding pass.

I go back to the front desk and explain. They've put me up overnight in a hotel: no lunch offered or snacks. Just dinner.

My issue here is tomorrow the flight is iverbooked. I have paid for speedy boarding, and for an extra leg room seat. All of which I hope to be compensated for. I will join my friends a day late and hopefully enjoy my holiday. BUT that flight is iverbooked and unless five people don't turn up then they'll be removing people from the flight. I hope to God it isn't me.

How do they get away with this?!

And EASYJET YOURE COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY INCOMPETENT.

just to add the queue was so long due to various complaints: one lady who's seat wa double booked so she was thrown off, 30 people also denied boarding S they'd downgraded to a smaller plane, a few missed flights due to the gate being changed and then not knowing, then those that were there due to overbooking. As well as the misfortinate who had simply missed their flight.

So I'm in my hotel room, bored and hungry and yes ranting!

Sorry you have had such a shitty time OP. Here's something to

abbey44 · 25/07/2017 17:03

I know that airlines, and particularly the budget ones, have to make money, but it's a disgraceful system and an underhand way of forcing you to pay extra to get a sporting chance of a seat. Doesn't work out quite so 'budget' when you take everything into consideration.

Glad my holiday's in Cornwall this year Smile

5foot5 · 25/07/2017 17:04

The problem originated because people don't turn up for flights. they buy flexible tickets and then go whenever. so the airline loses out with empty seats (which haven't been paid for as it was a flexible ticket).

But surely when you buy a flexible ticket you pay a premium for that flexibility.

And if you have bought (and paid for) a ticket for a specific flight then even if you don't turn up for that flight the airline are not losing out. So there really is no excuse for selling it twice.

Ijustwantaquietlife · 25/07/2017 17:05

How annoying, but I'm taking a similar flight next week and you have just made me go and check in online :) thankfully it worked. Hope you get away tomorrow

Guitargirl · 25/07/2017 17:06

Which airports were you flying to/from OP? I took a Ryanair flight to Croatia from Stansted today and there were empty seats.

Natsku · 25/07/2017 17:08

Make the most of the bar OP and find that silver lining. Awful way the airlines treat customers. Have never had it happen to me yet, I'm usually quite flexible so I guess it wouldn't be such a loss for me but later this year I need to fly to the UK for my brother's Court case and any delay then would be terrible, and would not be happy being delayed coming back because it'll be just before Independence Day which I do not want to miss so will definitely book seats and check in early.
Did miss one flight but that wasn't because of the airline but a problem at border control and the airline (Finnair) were brilliant and put me and DD on the next flight two hours later.

QuimReaper · 25/07/2017 17:10

This is dreadful OP!

It will only stop when people boycott them though. I think everyone has a story of EasyJet Rage, they must be one of the most despised companies in the UK.

rollonthesummer · 25/07/2017 17:11

If you do online check in and have paid for specific seats, are you safe??

Ijustwantaquietlife · 25/07/2017 17:13

Is this service part of the cost of these cheap flights? I'm going half way across Europe for 78 pounds return

cdtaylornats · 25/07/2017 17:19

Flights are overbooked because many people don't show up. You can have overbooked flights or less flights at twice the price.

Forest2017 · 25/07/2017 17:24

Hopefully I'll have a silver lining, not sure at 5.20pm many will be at the bar. Instead I'm watching shite tv (and eating cake) (not good for th bikini body)

If I get on tomorrow's flight and get my money back I can forgive and forget. If I don't then I'm a little screwed (I have a mortgage, plus rent and lots of overheads!!)

I could've flown to bloody Australia by now!

I'll update you all when/if on the runway!

Oh, god, what a nightmare. Which airport was it, OP? Where flying Easyjet this week and now I'm all anxious about it.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 25/07/2017 17:41

cdtaylor if Ryanair can manage not to overbook and not be twice the price, then yes it's possible not to have one or the other.

Wait4nothing · 25/07/2017 17:54

I really don't understand overbooking - surely everyone pays whether they arrive or not so overbooking just sells something they don't have - how can that be ok? It's not like they would loose money by not doing it - it's that they are making more money (immorally) by doing it.

JustDanceAddict · 25/07/2017 18:09

Have just checked in for my summer holiday flights with budget airlines, after reading this thread. Not flying easyJet this year, but we often do.

JustDanceAddict · 25/07/2017 18:10

And hope you get your flight tmw OP

SaltySeaBird · 25/07/2017 18:22

I had a similar situation with EasyJet recently.

They have paid my expenses but are refusing to pay the EU flight compensation despite the fact that it clearly falls within this and I had financial loss due to not being able to get my flight.

They are firmly refusing and lying.

ForalltheSaints · 25/07/2017 18:26

Overbooking on a plane should be illegal. End of. Any company that does that loses slots at airports.

AnaPhase88 · 25/07/2017 18:34

OP, I'm really sorry for your predicament.
I was booted off a Balkan Holidays flight (yeah- I'm naming and shaming!). Should have landed in a NW airport, turfed to Gatwick and then put on a bus home .
No food. No nothing. 26 hour delay. Their only compensation was half a glass of orange squash.
Company said that our treatment was a 'reasonable adjustment' and no compensation was needed.
When we complained- all correspondence was in Bulgarian, which needed to be paid for (by us) to be translated.

IroningMountain · 25/07/2017 18:47

Do they do this on US flights? We're planning a big trip for several weeks for 5. We'd b screwed if this happened as we'll have several different places to be on specific days.

Ijustwantaquietlife · 25/07/2017 18:57

Isn't it a good thing on long haul as one of your very few ways to get an upgrade?

wasonthelist · 25/07/2017 18:58

Ryanair for all their faults, don't do overbooking. If they can make it work, why can't Easyjet?

helpfulperson · 25/07/2017 19:08

The problem is that to because the flights are cheap people don't bother cancelling them if they can't fly because they won't get much money back. So often there are empty seats on 'full' flights. So overbooking is one way airlines can afford to make seats so cheap. Its a vicious cycle.

BellyDancer124 · 25/07/2017 19:09

Sorry OP :( really feel for you. Keep us updated WineFlowersCake

Leaspr · 25/07/2017 19:13

I know one UK airline that definitely overbooks their flights - and they know full well that they are doing it.
Not sure how they can justify it. I thinks it's appalling.
