To wish people wouldn't write 'text' when they mean 'texted'?

Sorry, but it makes my teeth itch.

My sister text me to say she was late

I text the other mum to tell her..

He text me to tell me it was over..

It's texted FFS!

(And it's packed lunch, not 'pack' lunch BTW)

I don't get the angst. And it is angst because it pops up on mn relatively frequently. It seems wrong to me, a bit like " he lefted the party early" but I do use it.

It's just because it's so obviously WRONG . Means you start reading a sentence in present tense then realise it isn't!

Personally, I hate texted! It just sounds so naff!!

I get it OP but texted is so much clumsier sounding

ThePink & Mysterious - you see, I can't agree about naff or clumsy. 'Text' just sounds naff and ignorant really.
If you substitute 'call' or 'email' for text it makes it clear how wrong it sounds.

I'm as pedantic as they come but this doesn't bother me. Texted is a horrible, unwieldy word and text is colloquially correct.

Texted is as unwieldy as Texas. Perfectly straightforward past tense.

When people say out loud, "texies" referring to there texts. Thats worse.

It took me til into my teens to realise that a chest of drawers were infact that, and not Chester drawers.

That's how language evolves though. Past participles which end on a T/D sound often end up being shortened over time.

Think of cut / shut / bid etc. They were almost certainly cutted / shutted / bidded at some point, but language is organic.

As littlebid said that's how language evolves. Texting is still a relatively new thing so it doesn't necessarily "fit" our language properly yet. When you say you text someone you can think of it like slang that is becoming the normal term (like when you used to say you 'videoed' something as a child when you recorded something, our parents probably rolled their eyes so many times with our lazy language). If I hear the word texted I imagine my mum saying it.
Incidentally I really hate the phrase "makes my teeth itch" I had never heard it before I joined MN and I find it very twee. We all have our pet peeves

I text. I am texting. I do not text if it is in the past tense. I texted.

Yes - I was being slightly provocative about the 'teeth itch' thing too - I've only ever heard it on MN!

Text instead of texted annoys me almost as much as aks instead of ask.

It's a new coinage. Why wouldn't it follow the standard grammar for regular verbs?

Oh well Oxford Dictionaries have texted as the past tense of the verb, so that's good enough for me to keep fighting for it!

Texted sounds weird. I'm with you on the packed lunch thing though. Pack lunch does my head in. Draws is another one. They're drawers.

HildaOg it's really not 'text'. It's texted.

It is cringeworthy when people say 'I text her'.

I'm sure people cringed when I called the Midas touch 'mid-ass' touch in my teen years
