To wish people wouldn't write 'text' when they mean 'texted'?

Sorry, but it makes my teeth itch.

My sister text me to say she was late

I text the other mum to tell her..

He text me to tell me it was over..

It's texted FFS!

(And it's packed lunch, not 'pack' lunch BTW) Grin

I wish! I sadly no longer have an Australian accent. I'm known as 'the secret Australian' at work.

Meantime, I wonder if nina is going to get in touch with the Economist and the Guardian/Observer to explain to them the error of their style choices?

Scrumpernickel · 28/06/2017 13:57

Will I set the wild nasals and labials on her? Wink

SadAboutTheBoy · 28/06/2017 13:58

Abra1d - you're right. I was in a hurry and made a mistake on my phone. Heartfelt apologies... Wink

Scrump, you totally have the makings of an AU fiction franchise there. Grin

That's an olive leaf, btw.

SadAboutTheBoy · 28/06/2017 17:06

Thanks! (I thought it might have been marijuana..)

Not a bad idea...

nina2b · 28/06/2017 17:17

I love Australians, really. The accent is great and so is Crocodile Dundee.

And the wine, and the 'no worries' attitude, and public BBQs and Quokas, best animal in the world Quokas.

nina2b · 29/06/2017 11:07

Yep, I'm sure. It is one of the countries I want to visit although I am a bit worried about the prospect of large spiders and snakes. It does look stunningly beautiful, though, so I won't be put off.

SerfTerf · 29/06/2017 11:19

"ed" endings are an endangered species. Abominations such as "It's so cliche", "...but I'm bias" and "He's so chill" are ubiquitous now and make me rant to the walls like a crazy lady.

(Sorry can't find accents on here.)

Thankfully that latest bit of linguistic "evolution" is not so prevalent here where I am. Most of my students use good English, in the conventional sense. They know the difference between a proper standard and the dumbed down version. Believe it or not, they want to use the former version!!

This sort of discussion is frankly academic and seems not to consider what young people actually want. How ironic.

SerfTerf · 29/06/2017 11:50

"What young people want"? Confused

AndTakeYourHorseWithYou · 29/06/2017 11:54

And what is all this bollocks about "shook" and "woke"?

JassyRadlett · 29/06/2017 11:56

Since this is a SPaG thread: Quokkas.

I'll leave the sweeping generalisations alone. Grin

nina2b · 29/06/2017 11:58

To clarify, the young people I teach actually wish (aka want) to learn, and use, what they regard - and what most people regard - as " proper English". Why is that so difficult to understand?

SerfTerf · 29/06/2017 12:02

That's nice @nina2b dear. Irrelevant to the thread, but nice Smile

nina2b · 29/06/2017 12:02

Cool!

nina2b · 29/06/2017 12:10

However... it is absolutely not irrelevant to the discussion. What a ridiculous thing to say!

nina2b · 29/06/2017 12:12

@SerfTerf who is an absolute "dear", naturally.

SerfTerf · 29/06/2017 12:12

Well if it only took a whole eight minutes for you to be sure of the relevance.... Wink

Bunnyfuller · 29/06/2017 12:28

Text is wrong grammar, not evolving language and not an alternative. Not sure how one more syllable makes the word unwieldy. That argument is nonsense as countless words are polysyllabic.

The 'Chester draws' is mind blowing. Do people not say the 'of' in the middle to perpetuate the error?

PuppyMonkey · 29/06/2017 12:36

I think seeing as text is just a daft made up verb created from what was originally a noun, people can do what they bloody well want with the past tense of it. Grin
