To wish people wouldn't write 'text' when they mean 'texted'?

Sorry, but it makes my teeth itch.

My sister text me to say she was late

I text the other mum to tell her..

He text me to tell me it was over..

It's texted FFS!

(And it's packed lunch, not 'pack' lunch BTW) Grin

The 'Chester draws' is mind blowing. Do people not say the 'of' in the middle to perpetuate the error?

It's an accent/pronunciation issue surely? How many people properly articulate cup of tea? I can understand it, tbh, when people have mainly heard it spoken - furniture often has odd names (a Chesterfield, ottomans, Tiffany lamps...)

Text is wrong grammar, not evolving language and not an alternative

At the moment that might be true, but there are plenty of verbs in our language with irregular past tenses, and given the widespread use of "text" for the past tense, it's possible that it will evolve as the accepted form. Or maybe it won't. It's an interesting thing to watch rather than bang a gavel and imply people who can't say an extra syllable are somehow lazy.

DadDadDad · 29/06/2017 13:20

Puppy - all words are made up! And plenty of verbs were formed by appropriating a noun (including "rain" and "thunder", apparently, or more recently "access" and "highlight").

Why do you think it daft? Why is "I sent X a text" better communication than "I texted X"?

PuppyMonkey · 29/06/2017 13:35

I didn't say it was better or not, I said people could do what they bloody well want. And yes I think texting is a bit of a daft modern verb, but I don't lie awake worrying about it. I'm sure I'll get used to it. Grin

JassyRadlett · 29/06/2017 13:36

I think seeing as text is just a daft made up verb created from what was originally a noun

Pedant alert! in this sense it was originally an adjective ('text message'). Took the noun form you would grammatically expect. Suggestions that it should take irregular verb forms seem to be based on ideas of difficulty/awkwardness of of pronunciation rather than, er, logic.

Unless 'tested' is going out the window, I'm going with 'texted' as the most logical form.

DadDadDad · 29/06/2017 13:42

Puppy - I still don't get it. Why is it daft to say "I texted X" when "I sent X a text" is much more long-winded?

Jassy - pedant challenge: surely in "text message" text is a noun modifying another noun, just as in "pedant alert" pedant is a noun modifying the head noun of alert?

DadDadDad · 29/06/2017 13:50

You can test whether it's an adjective by seeing whether it does things that adjectives do: eg

a long message >>>
not as long as this one
I got a long one too
a very long message
a long confusing message

BUT

a text message >>>
not as text as this one ??
I got a text one too ?
a very text message ??
a text confusing message ???

PuppyMonkey · 29/06/2017 13:59

Dad I'm actually saying "I text x" should be just as acceptable as "I texted x" - because it's just a "made up" verb imho. That is, people should do what they bloody well want. I'm off for a lie down now. Grin

KingPrawnOkay · 29/06/2017 14:07

I didn't know other people felt like this, but yes, people saying "text" makes me irrationally angry.

JassyRadlett · 29/06/2017 14:16

I concede defeat. Grin
