To think fish is not a vegetarian option?

At a wedding yesterday and at the wedding lunch today I was given fish as my vegetarian option. Am I wrong in thinking this is not right? I don't eat fish and I know they can't be expected to know this but I thought vegetarians didn't eat fish anyway and that's pescatarian.

YANBU. My vegetarian option in France was plain rice and a fish with a head on Sad for a week!

Thank you. Every seems to think I'm being picky not wanting fish! At the wedding the planner lady even said "but this swordfish is especially for you"

YANBU. Problem is pescatarians just tell everyone they're vegetarian so people start to think vegetarians eat fish. I know someone who says he's vegan but eats fish Hmm

LiDLrichardsPistachioSack · 11/06/2017 15:40

This always baffles me. Fish are animals FFS!

Rawhh · 11/06/2017 15:41

No Fish is not a Vegetarian option and anyone working in catering should know that. How fucking patronising of that wedding planner.

What did you eat in the end?

AnnieAnoniMouse · 11/06/2017 15:41

YANBU

It's absolutely not on for a Catering Company to serve fish as a vegetarian option. Its worrying what might be IN the food if they can't get this basic right.

plaintomatopasta · 11/06/2017 15:41

The salad and bread!

AlpacaPicnic · 11/06/2017 15:42

Vegetarian = no food with a face.
Not difficult.

I know some people who mostly eat a vegetarian diet but sometimes choose to eat fish, and describe themselves as vegetarian because it's easier but that's different to being told that your only vegetarian option is fish...

MyGastIsFlabbered · 11/06/2017 15:42

It's those bloody pescetarians who refer to themselves as vegetarians who cause this trouble. Eat what you want but don't call yourself vegetarian if you eat fish/chicken/any dead animal. I feel for you OP.

PaperdollCartoon · 11/06/2017 15:42

YANBU fish isn't vegetarian. A caterers should know that the least!

SnickersWasAHorse · 11/06/2017 15:43

Why do people find this so hard to understand?
I have actually taken to saying 'I'm vegetarian, I don't eat meat or fish'.

thenightsky · 11/06/2017 15:44

DH drives me mad with this... going around telling everyone that 'we are vegetarians'... No we are fucking not, we eat fish! I've been correcting him for 25 years now and he still says it to people.

I was flicking through a vegetarian recipe book the other day and he said to me... 'are there any nice looking fish recipes in there?'

Arrrgh! Angry

Nellyphants · 11/06/2017 15:44

It's a fishconception (geddit?). That vegetarians eat fish. 'But my sister is a vegetarian & she eats chicken & fish'. I've been given fish as the vegetarian option, that or congealed pasta or risotto- or sick on a plate as I call it

Leeds2 · 11/06/2017 15:45

I'm very surprised that professional caterers would make such a basic mistake. Of course you shouldn't serve fish as a veggie option!

plaintomatopasta · 11/06/2017 15:48

What's confusing is it's happened today too at the wedding lunch and it's in a restaurant. My new SIL even said "it's ok I've made sure they did a separate meal. They've said it's fish for you instead of the chicken and pork!"

I know the hotel is still there. Large 5star place in a city near to where dp worked during the 80s. I used to have to attend functions there.

There idea of vegetarian was ham chicken or fish. When I explained they said I should call myself vegan.

I have been to functions where the vegetarian option is rice with a black olive on top. It really is dire

Huldra · 11/06/2017 15:50

It is not a vegetarian option and it's terrilble that a caterer can get it wrong.

plaintomatopasta · 11/06/2017 15:51

The thing is I don't have dairy either so I probably should say vegan!

OP posts:
newtlover · 11/06/2017 15:54

YANBU I despair I really do.
It's worse at a function like that as you don't want to spoil things by making a fuss. If it was a normal restaurant I'd be making a loud incredulous fuss.

MrsPorth · 11/06/2017 15:54

I'm pescatarian and in the past I described myself as veggie for the sake of ease, but having heard stories like yours, I stopped because it was clear that I was causing problems for proper veggies.

That said, a CATERER should know!

newtlover · 11/06/2017 15:56

'I'm a vegetarian, that means I don't eat meat of any sort, that includes poultry, fish, and seafood.'
Derrr as the YPs say.

Mustang27 · 11/06/2017 15:58

I'd have made the wedding planner wear that swordfish. How insensitive.
