To think fish is not a vegetarian option?

At a wedding yesterday and at the wedding lunch today I was given fish as my vegetarian option. Am I wrong in thinking this is not right? I don't eat fish and I know they can't be expected to know this but I thought vegetarians didn't eat fish anyway and that's pescatarian.

So, is veggie no meat at all, pescetarian no meat but fish? And vegan no meat at all or anything that's come from an animal?

We have some children at nursery whose parents refer to them as vegetarians, but they actually eat fish and meat if it's halal, then we vegetarians who eat fish and vegetarian who it's no meat at all. It gets confusing trying to establish what exactly they mean!

I wouldn't assume vegetarians eat fish and always check.

Ozzde · 11/06/2017 18:04

Yep you got it Britt. Don't ask me what a flexitarian is though - I assume a part time veggie. Or more specifically just someone who eats food but wanted to give themselves a special term for it Grin

MiddlingMum · 11/06/2017 18:16

Meat eaters frequently have no understanding of vegetarian food. For that reason, I rarely eat out, you just can't trust the food.

I was once given some "vegetarian" quiche, but realised it had bacon in it. When I pointed this out, the answer was "Yes, but it's been chopped up very small." Hmm

StealthPolarBear · 11/06/2017 18:17

This is amazing!

SarfEast1cated · 11/06/2017 18:20

On one level I think that eating meat (which is farmed and managed) is better in a way to eating fish (which is a finite resource). Over fishing and the destruction of our sea-life is a massive issue for me.

Slimthistime · 11/06/2017 18:30

I'm envious of the people finding mushroom risotto on menus. I'm finding it's gone and everything is lentil based.

Oh and I usually pack my lunch but went to a Tesco the other day as I'd been rushing in the morning. It was a small tesco but central London. Only veggie sandwich was falafel. In a sandwich? And it was early, they hadn't run out of anything.

SailAwayWithMeHoney · 11/06/2017 18:31

Yanbu!!
This drives me crazy. A man in Starbucks overheard me tell my companion that I could only eat one panini in there because it's the only veggie one, he took it upon himself to tell me to get the tuna one. Like, wtf?! 😳

I looked at him like he'd grown three heads while my friend burst into laughter.

StealthPolarBear · 11/06/2017 18:31

I love mushrooms and lentils. Hate goats cheese and aubergine.
Tesco Sandwiches are dreadful!

JayZed · 11/06/2017 18:31

Veggie friend once realised a restaurant had served her veal. She pulled them up and a lovely server gave an explanation of 'oh it was only alive for a short time though' Confused

StealthPolarBear · 11/06/2017 18:32
Shock
MrsKoala · 11/06/2017 18:34

One of my veggie friends is allergic to rice. Most places the veggie option is mushroom risotto Confused (used to be veggie lasagne) . She usually has a bowl of chips for her dinner unless we go middle eastern which seems to have loads of lovely options and i am made up with a veggie Mezze too.

justkeepswimmingg · 11/06/2017 18:41

I hate that people assume vegetarians eat fish. I'm not a vegetarian, as such, but I don't eat meat as don't like the texture. People always class me as vegetarian, and assume I eat fish. If I don't like the texture of meat, then I don't like the texture of fish either! Vegetarian options can be awful.

On the subject of wedding meals.. I was once served ice cream at a wedding, which is what I ordered in advance (from the kids menu). When they brought it over I noticed it smelt funny, and had a very strong odour to it. Questioned the server who said it had alcohol in! Whiskey if I remember rightly! It was on a kids menu! And I was pregnant, heavily, for all to see!

Ditsy1980 · 11/06/2017 18:50

This thread made me laugh!

I became vegetarian when I was 13 and it totally baffled my Gran. "I've made sausage rolls Ditsy", "no thank you, I'm vegetarian", "but they're still hot"....and my favourite one, "Ditsy, I've only gave you a little bit of turkey" me having a massive teenage strop Gran shouting after me as I left the room "but it's CHRISTMAS!". Still not going to eat dead bird Gran. 😂😂

plaintomatopasta · 11/06/2017 18:50

I might invent my own more annoying diet choice for them 😂

I'm the super annoying vegetarian who returns food to the kitchen if it's been contaminated.
On a flight the attendant offered to remove the meat items from the plate as they had no meal for me (despite being told ahead of time), I was furious but then they found a "spare" vegetarian meal.

In a pub I ordered a vegetarian roast which came with a jug of gravy. I duly poured it over my meal only to discover it was beef. When I sent it back I was told they didn't have any vegetarian so thought it was okHmm dh had finished eating before it arrived.

Last time (a few months ago), similar happened in a well known chain, the vegetarian option had been fried with fish. That went back but rather than wait for another plate I had it removed from the bill. They added a 20% discount to everything else.
I have to say that that time although someone obviously made a mistake, the management team were very apologetic and couldn't do enough to correct the error. Much different to the pub with the gravy.

Yanbu.

thereallochnessmonster · 11/06/2017 18:58

It can be really hard eating out with a fussy vegetarian/a vegetarian who doesn't eat 'traditional' veggie meals.ingredients (goat's cheese, feta, spinach, mushrooms, risotto). The best places we have found are Italian, Indian and Turkish restaurants. The worst are often pubs - and France can be a nightmare with a vegetarian.

AdoraBell · 11/06/2017 18:58

DH once bought a quiche for veggie SIL. I told him it had bacon in it. He said "yes" like I was being incredibly stupid. Apparently bacon isn't meat so she should eat it Hmm

AmserGwin · 11/06/2017 19:00

I'm going to Greece in August, never been before and I'm a vegetarian (that doesn't eat fish). Should be interesting! Luckily my friend lives there, and speaks the language so she can make sure for me

StealthPolarBear · 11/06/2017 19:02

What did he think bacon is

lljkk · 11/06/2017 19:04

The word pescetarian (Google says) didn't get invented until 1992. So those of us that were "veggie" in the 1980s didn't have another word to describe how we eat.

user1468353179 · 11/06/2017 19:09

If it had a face then you won't eat it. Simple.

FiftyShadesOfDuckEggBlue · 11/06/2017 19:12

YANBU. Happens to me all the time!! I'll say to someone I'm vegetarian only to hear them say "...but you eat fish right?" I've heard it even by some very close friends!

Malfoyy · 11/06/2017 19:12

I was going to ask where you are as this sounds like the UK 27 years ago when I went veggie but I see from scrolling down it's Greece.

Poor you! It's that age old 'do you eat fish?' when you say you're veggie thing and the 'well what CAN you eat'? So ignorant!

The worst meal I had was in Romania... just a plate of runner beans Sad

I feel your pain

LivingInMidnight · 11/06/2017 19:13

lljkk You could have just said you don't eat meat. The definition of vegetarian has always been a person who doesn't eat meat or fish.

MarklahMarklah · 11/06/2017 19:18

Years ago I was visiting a friend in Germany. She said, "I got you ham because you don't eat meat." No idea what her logic was - she spoke perfectly good English and I've been veggie for decades, which she knew.

I'm vegetarian but intolerant to dairy so I tend to ask for the vegan option. I have been offered fish as the vegetarian option before and had to explain why it isn't.
