To think fish is not a vegetarian option?

At a wedding yesterday and at the wedding lunch today I was given fish as my vegetarian option. Am I wrong in thinking this is not right? I don't eat fish and I know they can't be expected to know this but I thought vegetarians didn't eat fish anyway and that's pescatarian.

The question today when I refused was "well what do you eat? It must be impossible"

YANBU at all, how hard is it to understand?
I do get annoyed at the ones who say they are veggie but eat fish and pork chops and bacon MIL!

MrsJayy · 11/06/2017 15:59

Surely everybody knows fish isn't vegitarian especially a bloody caterer for a wedding .

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 11/06/2017 16:00

This drives me absolutely fucking nuts.

And yeah I do mainly blame the pescatarians for saying they are veggie, then eating fish.

There is a severe lack of decent veggie food at functions.
And don't even get me started on the fact that almost every gastro pub or "posher" restaraunt only has one veggie option on the menu.
Like we are all fucking hive mind with exactly the same tastes as each other.

Something else that really gets on my tits is the often complete lack of veggie options for kids in places.
And yeah I could order a smaller adult plate, but when you are 5 and being taken out for a treat, being presented with a bowl of mushroom risotto is not going to make your day, is it?

How hard is it to keep some fucking veggie sausages in the freezer ffs?

PopcornBits · 11/06/2017 16:01

Wow that's really terrible. She could have at least asked you in advance!

My recent thomson flight I told them I was vegetarian and they gave me prawns, when I told her I was vegetarian she said "that's what they give to vegetarians" and she just sort of fumbled around forever trying to then figure out what to do as everyone had been allocated their dishes.. I had to just tell her I'd have it in the end else no one would of got fed.

Bella1985 · 11/06/2017 16:02

I eat meat and fish, don't work in catering and still know that vegetarians don't eat fish. Are these people a bit thick?! Awful catering service, although they could be guided by your stupid SIL if she's told them fish is ok...?

Slimthistime · 11/06/2017 16:03

OMD
the caterer is insane
but did other organisers know about this?

I am veggie but after this will write down "no meat or fish".

if you are dairy free as well I'd write vegan though.

but seriously, I'm always confused when I hear someone say they are vegetarian and think that means they eat fish - but I really don't expect a caterer or event organiser to make that error.

CivQueen · 11/06/2017 16:03

I had to very politely and repeatedly explain the other day that vegans don't eat omelettes 'even with no cheese on!'

Apparently a woman mil works with says she is a vegan, even though she regularly eats eggs and fish.

I can kind of understand a pescatarian saying they were a vegetarian for ease.

But a pescatarian/vegetarian saying they are a vegan? For ease? No way! Grin

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 11/06/2017 16:04

I thought vegetarians could eat fish guess I was wrong. What's the difference between a vegetarian and a pescatarian.

thereallochnessmonster · 11/06/2017 16:04

YANBU! Pescatarians eat fish but not meat. Vegetarians don't eat any living things. Not rocket science...

Slimthistime · 11/06/2017 16:04

OMD x post - the Thomson airline thing!!

It's funny, I've recently been thinking veggie options have got worse than in the past, perhaps not my imagination....

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 11/06/2017 16:05

And yeah it's especially bad coming from professional caterers ffs.

If anyone should know about different diets, it's people who make money out of making meals!

MrsJayy · 11/06/2017 16:06

The general point of being vegitarian is you don't eat dead creatures a fish is a creature

PlymouthMaid1 · 11/06/2017 16:06

I wish people understood the term pescatarian. Some seem to think its a religion. Shocking on the part of actual caterers.

Fl0ellafunbags · 11/06/2017 16:07

fishconception

Genius!

I used to live with a Spanish fella who claimed that prawns are vegetables because they don't have ears.

MrsJayy · 11/06/2017 16:08

Or asa pp said food with faces Grin

MrsJayy · 11/06/2017 16:09

Prescetarian been mistaken for a religion

Hefzi · 11/06/2017 16:10

Are you in the UK? I've encountered that in mainland Europe, but not here. I'd also like to blame pescatarians for this, though - if it feels pain, vegetarians don't eat it Grin (Actually, that's not why I'm vegetarian, but anyway...) I got into trouble once on Kenya Airways for daring to suggest that Nile Perch was not suitable for vegetarians - I just take a bag of nuts nowadays Grin

I also had the same issue at my sibling's wedding - also overseas. Literally all I could eat was the tomato garnish (fancy pants 7 course tasting menu) on one of the courses - and the single profiterole that was pudding. So I filled up on wine and heckled the father-of-the-bride like a good'un.Grin

plaintomatopasta · 11/06/2017 16:11

I should have added we are in Greece...

OP posts:
Elphame · 11/06/2017 16:13

France is terrible - At one hotel last winter I was served fish, mussels ( to which I'm quite seriously allergic anyway), duck and vegetables cooked in animal fat. The "vegetable" soup was made with chicken stock too (this is surprisingly common).

I dread functions - always mushroom risotto. A Michelin starred restaurant once pushed the boat out and gave me butternut risotto (it was just nasty)

starfishmummy · 11/06/2017 16:13

My first introduction to a "vegetarian" was someone who would not eat meat or fish if she had to cook it. If someone else had done the cooking then she ate it. It was that she just didnt like handling them raw!!! Perfectly fine, but should not have said she was veggie!!

MrsJayy · 11/06/2017 16:13

Surely you get greek vegitarians?

Rubies12345 · 11/06/2017 16:15

Surely you weren't the only vegetarian at the wedding? Or the only one that's ever been to that wedding venue

Mexxi · 11/06/2017 16:15

I am a vegetarian, and although I eat cheese, I often find that most veggie options involve tons of the stuff. Last time I was on a course at work, I said I was vegan to avoid the cheese fest. I was served a ham salad Confused

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 11/06/2017 16:15

Maybe the caterers think there's such a thing as a Non-Practicing Vegetarian? Grin
