To ask... if you were a guest in someone's home would you

prefer to sleep on:

a) a futon (e.g. posh Futon Company style one)

b) a day bed (e.g. IKEA Hemnes) with decent mattress

c) a traditional fold-out sofa bed

I am veering towards option B because the mattress would be firm and supportive rather than the foam options that the traditional fold-out sofa offers.

We would use it 2-3 times a year, the main people using it will be 70+ (and one has back problems) so the more comfortable we can make it the better.

It's to go in our playroom, so as a sofa to sit on it doesn't need to be wildly comfortable (we have other sofas for sitting on).

I'd prefer something compact to maximise space for playing. Don't mind spending more if anyone has ideas beyond the above but I don't want a big old sofa that takes up loads of space.

IABU to put this in AIBU I know. Especially as this topic has been done before just not very recently.

I'm not sure what a day bed is, but I think I'd pick that.

Cs are cunts. Never met a comfy one. We have a quite expensive one and it's still bloody uncomfortable.

B - day bed. Definitely. They are much better because you can put a proper mattress on them.

I personally prefer a futon: but if it's mainly going to be older people, I think you definitely need something higher up, on a par with a regular bed. If you put a decent mattress on it, I think the day bed is the best option - you can get them with a trundle so that they turn into a double bed too.

Day bed, definitely. Although if the guests are of that age with back problems I would offer them my bed.

Our friends have one from Ikea which is amazingly comfy.

B. Futons are the work of the devil.

Growing up we had a really comfy sofa bed. God knows what it cost though. I'd go for whichever has the best medium to firm mattress.

Fold out sofas are the work of the devil. Although they can be tolerable with a good topper.

I've been sleeping on an Ikea brimnes day bed (with the more expensive mattress option) for six months. It's very comfortable.

B - my parents have one and it's fine.

I'd sleep happily on C if I was by myself but would hate to try and share it with DH - they are just not big enough for two! I'd prefer two single airbeds to that!

Day bed. My daughter has one that my parents sleep on when they visit. My Dad is 68 with a lifetime of back problems and he prefers the (firm) mattress on it to his regular bed at home!
