prefer to sleep on:

a) a futon (e.g. posh Futon Company style one)

b) a day bed (e.g. IKEA Hemnes) with decent mattress

c) a traditional fold-out sofa bed

I am veering towards option B because the mattress would be firm and supportive rather than the foam options that the traditional fold-out sofa offers.

We would use it 2-3 times a year, the main people using it will be 70+ (and one has back problems) so the more comfortable we can make it the better.

It's to go in our playroom, so as a sofa to sit on it doesn't need to be wildly comfortable (we have other sofas for sitting on).

I'd prefer something compact to maximise space for playing. Don't mind spending more if anyone has ideas beyond the above but I don't want a big old sofa that takes up loads of space.

IABU to put this in AIBU I know. Especially as this topic has been done before just not very recently.

Thanks for reading.

B and be done with it. I'd never in a million years expect my host to give up their bed and would refuse if they offered.

nakedandconcerned · 14/05/2017 21:19

Definitely not the fold out sofa.

B probably

BrexitSucks · 14/05/2017 21:19

Whichever one is highest & firmest. My 74yo dad couldn't sleep on a futon on the floor (doesn't get down & up so easily now).

toomanyloos · 14/05/2017 21:20

Have you looked at click clack sofa beds? We have one, the back clicks down to give a flat double bed. V easy to use and very comfortable. I spent much of my pregnancy sleeping on it as I found it more comfortable than our bed.

ChorusLine69 · 14/05/2017 21:22

Monkey - we just have the standard mattresses from Ikea that we bought to go with the hemnes, they're not that thick, so you may be better going for premium ones as someone else mentioned if you really want to spoil your guests! We were short of cash so went for cheaper ones but I still find it comfy as I prefer a firmer bed anyway

Earslaps · 14/05/2017 21:24

We have this in our study/spare room. Comfy to sit and sleep on, and you can store all the bedding underneath. We'll get another for the playroom when they boys grow out of their toys and don't need the massive toy boxes anymore.

sycamore54321 · 14/05/2017 21:26

If it is suitable for your space, IKEA Friheten is hands down the best sofa bed there is. Easy to convert, entirely solid and stable as a bed, firm sleeping surface and as an added bonus, the seat lifts up so you have a huge storage box for your spare duvet and pillows.

RB68 · 14/05/2017 21:27

Have you thought about one of those store against the wall and pull down style beds - proper matress and decent base but just folds up clips up and close cupboard doors.

M&D invested in a sofa bed thinking it was the best thing to do at theirs and I was crippled the next day and ended on the sofa anyway and I have 20 yrs before I am 70

GeekyWombat · 14/05/2017 21:29

Definitely a day bed.

thisagain · 14/05/2017 21:30

B

Wolfcub · 14/05/2017 21:32

B

IfNotDuffers · 14/05/2017 21:33

Going against the grain, A. But I like a really firm mattress and find a futon firmer than anything other than a really expensive mattress, not the sort you'd get on option B. And the Futon Company style sofas are practically indestructable, too, which is a bonus in a playroom where it's like to get pretty hard use.

Rainbunny · 14/05/2017 21:34

B definitely - I've slept on a Hemnes daybed and it was perfectly comfortable.

Happyhippy45 · 14/05/2017 21:38

Elderly relatives had trouble getting in and out of futon.
I've slept on a day bed for 10 weeks on the rubbish mattress but it was still pretty comfortable.
I've NEVER had a good nights sleep on a sofa bed.

So B would be the best option ime.

dudsville · 14/05/2017 21:41

purple daisies, is it the same one madison above mentions? I need a sfa bed that will mostly be used as a sofa so am sneakng around on this thread!

KindDogsTail · 14/05/2017 21:42

The Hemnes daybed/sofa is good but the mattresses intended for it are too thin. The drawback of a thicker mattress is that when one is on top of the other, as they are when it is in sofa form, two good, thick, mattresses make it quite high. I am not saying not to get this, just to think it out ahead and be aware of this. If you get this bed, get good quality pocket-sprung mattresses which are not too thick.

The drawers are very useful.

dudsville · 14/05/2017 21:44

ooh, golight;y, you can choose your own grade of mattress? I will goggle once rtft!

dudsville · 14/05/2017 21:55

ack, those ikea sofa won't go with what i need. back to my search, sorry for hijack op. i'd prefer the futon fwiw!

LondonNicki · 14/05/2017 21:55

There are some gorgeous day beds out there. Futons are a bit 'student digs'.

bridgetreilly · 14/05/2017 21:56

B or C are both fine, in my experience. I can and will sleep on a futon but I don't love it and for older people they really aren't great. The quality of sofa beds does vary greatly, however, and it's definitely worth the money for a good one.

Newname20 · 14/05/2017 21:57

We have just had to make the same decision and have ended up with a sofa bed. We were lucky enough to find a second hand barely used one in a charity shop which has a proper sprung mattress and everyone who has slept on it has said it is very comfortable.

I think if we hadn't found that one we would have opted for the idea sofa bed as we were concerned the day bed would be difficult to get in and out of as you can only get out on one side.

AndNowItIsSeven · 14/05/2017 21:57

B we have that ikea bed.

strikhedonia · 14/05/2017 21:57

B

Futon are too low, sofa beds don't age well and are awful for your back. For the day bed you can buy a decent mattress which stays flat and keeps its shape, it's only ever uncomfortable if you try to sleep in the middle. You can also use it as a single as is, so it's very practical.

AndNowItIsSeven · 14/05/2017 21:57

It's a king not a double.

BuzzKillington · 14/05/2017 22:00

B

We have the Hemnes day bed for guests and it makes a huge a very comfortable double.
