prefer to sleep on:

a) a futon (e.g. posh Futon Company style one)

b) a day bed (e.g. IKEA Hemnes) with decent mattress

c) a traditional fold-out sofa bed

I am veering towards option B because the mattress would be firm and supportive rather than the foam options that the traditional fold-out sofa offers.

We would use it 2-3 times a year, the main people using it will be 70+ (and one has back problems) so the more comfortable we can make it the better.

It's to go in our playroom, so as a sofa to sit on it doesn't need to be wildly comfortable (we have other sofas for sitting on).

I'd prefer something compact to maximise space for playing. Don't mind spending more if anyone has ideas beyond the above but I don't want a big old sofa that takes up loads of space.

IABU to put this in AIBU I know. Especially as this topic has been done before just not very recently.

Thanks for reading.

We have a sofa bed which is rather comfortable, it's an Ikea Lycksele.

Flowerpower321 · 14/05/2017 20:58

None of them- get a sofa and an aerobed- much more comfortable!!

Vroomster · 14/05/2017 20:58

Those futons are awful to sleep on.

Floggingmolly · 14/05/2017 20:59

B, without question

Kokusai · 14/05/2017 20:59

B plus extra mattress topper

TheMysteriousJackelope · 14/05/2017 21:01

By day bed, do you mean a regular bed that is made up to work as a sofa most of the time?

If so, I'd go with the day bed.

We have a single bed in our play room. It is great as the DC can both sit at each end and read, so a bit like a two seat chaise longue. If they have sleepovers we can drag the matress into one of the DC's bedrooms for a more comfortable place than the floor. It'll also be handy when the DC leave home and need a guest bed for their own houses.

Fl0ellafunbags · 14/05/2017 21:02

Not a futon. My sister had one that was so uncomfortable I slept on the floor.

ChorusLine69 · 14/05/2017 21:03

B

We have an IKEA hemnes and it's pretty comfortable, decent size and looks nice too

Crowdblundering · 14/05/2017 21:04

D) a hotel - hate sleeping in other people's houses Grin

monkeymamma · 14/05/2017 21:04

officially that's an excellent point - thank you. And to everyone else for your answers - they are very useful! Especially as I think a consensus is emerging :-)
why don't you ask them knowing my luck I'd get three different answers and then things could get really awkward! (It would be potentially a different person each time. Only one has back issues but all are 70+ so I think have earned the right to a comfy night if possible!)
Is it an option for the host to give up their bed yes it is. Especially if we went for the daybed and got the extra bit that opens it into a double. At the moment swapping and having our bed is not necessarily a covetable option as whoever sleeps there will end up sharing with two very wriggly boys (my DH was called 'the windmill' as a child and his offspring have inherited his unique sleeping habits; they also tend to drift towards us as the night wears on). So in a way, this arrangement would have the bonus effect of buying me and DH a peaceful night in the guest room LOL.
Really appreciate the help and advice! And not being flamegrilled for inappropriate use of AIBU!

We have an IKEA sofa bed in our playroom and it's really comfortable. I'll dig out the name of it now.

NoOneLikesACrispyTowel · 14/05/2017 21:05

I've no idea what a day bed is but Futons are awful it doesn't matter how much they cost.

I'm going for B.

Ethylred · 14/05/2017 21:06

Oh god not a fold-out sofa. Ex-FIL had one and although he is a wonderful man (if a bit of a goniff) and very rich he chose to save money on the fold-out charade. Awful, I've slept better in carparks.

TittyGolightly · 14/05/2017 21:06

It's a lykesele and I got the middle of the range mattress for it.

Yukbuck · 14/05/2017 21:07

We have an ikea sofa bed. I'm not 100% sure but think it's the lovas one. It's not the most comfy as a sofa due to shape but it's really comfy as a bed!
But equally I would vote for B.

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 14/05/2017 21:07

Way back when I lived in a one-bed flat and was expecting a baby, and worried I might end up using a sofa bed on a daily basis once DS was old enough to need his own room, I tried pretty much every sofa bed on the market up to a value of about a thousand quid, and came to the conclusion that they're all shit. I have a fold-out posh futon (not IKEA) from the sofa company. It's getting a bit elderly now 8 years in, but it's done bloody well. (It didn't get used daily because I managed to move to a 2 bed place when DS was one, but it's had a lot of use when my DDad comes to visit - several months worth at one point when he was having work done on his house!)

So I'd go with option A myself, and definitely not option C because all sofa beds are cack, no matter how much money you spend on them.

PrettyGoodLife · 14/05/2017 21:07

C

monkeymamma · 14/05/2017 21:08

Crowdblundering I think my DDad feels the same, but I like to force my hospitality on him at least once a year!

Chorus do you mind me asking which mattress you ordered with your Hemnes?

Very happy to hear all the stories of relatives liking the daybed option!

Another vote for the ikea sofa bed whose name noone can remember, it's great.

We have a Hemnes and it is really comfortable. We have two different mattresses (one of the basic and one of the £20 more expensive 'premium' ones) and you can't tell the difference.

The only downside to it is that whoever sleeps on the wall side when it is pulled out to be a (very generous) double has no easy exit from the bed once there are two people on it, as you are hemmed in on 3 sides by the sides of the daybed. Not really an issue if you're reasonably mobile, but maybe trickier once you are getting old and creaky.

Being able to store all the bedding in the drawers and then some is also great.

toffeeboffin · 14/05/2017 21:13

B.

ImperialBlether · 14/05/2017 21:16

Wouldn't it be cheaper to get whatever you want and then pay for your parents to stay in a hotel?

JigglyTuff · 14/05/2017 21:16

That is a very good point Quod - my parents would certainly struggle with that (and both have a need for a nighttime pee).

I have slept on an extremely comfortable sofa bed but it was apparently hugely expensive. Most of them are ghastly

defnotadomesticgoddess · 14/05/2017 21:18

B - we've got one in our playroom for exactly the reasons you said. It's great. It's massive when pulled out so it's a double (my sister and her 2 daughters all slept on it together, so it's quite big). The mattress is really comfy and the storage underneath in the 3 drawers is really useful.
