AIBUto feel so angry with Dd's Uni

Dd taking her finals, first exam was today. Phoned me straight after distraught, as they had failed to provide the necessary appendices. Entire room were in tears, invigilators contacted dpt but to no avail.Were told to continue exam which they could not without the supplementary information! Tonight dd has received an e mail from said dpt "apologising for the error and mistake will be rectified". But how wii this be done? AIBU to be absolutely fuming with this utter balls up happening?

That's terrible. The exam should have been postponed until the appendices were there.

Omg your poor girl! I would have been fuming and panicking and desperately upset and terrified all at once! Hope it all comes out in the wash.

TBH I don,t think they had a clue as when said dpt was contacted, they insisted that they were none to be handed out , useless!

It's obviously a complete balls up and the Uni will be bending over backwards to come up with some kind of a fix. Your dd will be wound up enough already, try to inject an aura of calm for her for the rest of her finals. My dd is also doing her finals at the moment, I know how horrible this must be, but she needs to stay settled and focussed on the next exam.

Hugs to mums of kids doing finals everywhere by the way.

Look at it logically. Everyone was in the same boat, so they will either reset the exam, cut the mark out or do some other thing to prevent this affecting the outcome.

It's never impressive when universities do this but in my experience it happens quite a lot.

I think just calm down, both of you.

It wasn't a good start to her finals, first of 7 exams and has dented her confidence and she is now worrying already about her degree result plus all the revision she has done! I am fuming to say the least!

Most university results are done on percentages so as it's effected them all equally it shouldn't make any difference.

Unless you're talking about something like formula sheets where some of them may know them.

Kelly's, it is not a sats test that they are sitting but finals that could affect and define their career path!

As stated already, the university will bend over backwards to sort this out. There is no way they will want to have deal with appeals over this.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but universities set their own papers? It's not as if an independent body will be doing that. Therefore any errors will be rectified by the university.

Bit of a worry about 20+somethings 'in tears' though , all of them. They wont be coping with the adversity life throws at them .

You've overreacted, and I've been harsher than I would be in real life. This is a mistake that happens, and it will be resolved in some way. It won't affect your daughter's career

They'll either have to rerun the exam, or (more likely) they'll discount the exam and base the mark for that module purely on the other pieces of work that have been set. Get your DD and her friends to report this to their course rep and to the students' union and ask for their help in sorting it out.

I think you need to get a grip , the uni have said it will be rectified so there's no point in getting up in arms before they've told the students what they are going to do . You are doing your daughter no favours by taking this approach . When ds did his finals they dug the road up outside on one of the days , apparently the noise was deafening ( very old , listed building) , they all complained and the uni did something to amend the results .

I had to deal with a group of students last year who came back to the department sobbing and hyperventilating because some other students whose exam finished earlier than theirs made a bit of noise when leaving the exam hall.

It'll be rectified. Your daughter won't be impacted by it. And a whole room of students crying? Doubt it. Shit happens when you've got thousands upon thousands of students sitting exams at the same time. The unis are good at sorting things out.

Your attitude that it'll define her career path is no doubt worsening the situation though. That perspective ist a terrible burden to place on her.

I cried in one of my finals and I could see the girl in front of me's shoulders shaking. I was pretty stressed out and then found out that the exam was not what I'd been led to believe. I don't think crying was unreasonable really. It was all right in the end though.

My parents never knew anything about it.

University finals are a big deal. I'm not surprised they students were upset. I might not have cried, but I would have been upset.

The uni will fix this. They couldn't have stopped the exam - uni exam timetabling is THE BIGGEST HEADACHE to organise, there is simply no scope for stopping an exam and rearanging for another day, but they will come up with another way of fixing this that's fair to the students.

I can quite believe the students were all carrying on but you need to get her to see that she needs to exercise some resilience and concentrate on the next exam. This fuck up was their fault, they'll own it and it won't impact her. An inability to pull it together in the face of adversity will, and there won't be any special circumstances in the next exams.

Plus, if she can hold it together when everyone else is still panicky she might get better marks ;D

Are they, yes they said it would be rectified but hopefully satisfactorily and tbh it's not what any of us would like to be confronted with at the start of their finals! It's not as if the dpt acknowledged their so called error until hours later.
