"Laughing up their sleeves" is used frequently in the US. Not sure why people are baffled by the use of that phrase. I've heard it used many times there.

He is a complete arsehole.

Not only Democrats are used to losing elections, as when W won with dodgy votes from Florida and lost the popular vote they accepted the result.
The key part is that, for all his faults, so did W. He shut up about the election and went ahead with the actual business of being President.
