to wear leather when meeting a vegetarian?

My office is a casual office and people wear leather jackets. My friend, who sits in the next cubicle and with whom I go out for lunch sometimes, is a vegetarian.

AIBU to wear a leather jacket?

No! You must weave a sackcloth out of lentils immediately.

Yeah, hers is actually because of religion.

I'm vegetarian and I don't wear leather, but I know loads do. It wouldn't bother me.

NoMaybe · 01/05/2017 23:36

Why hold back? Wear a neckless of sausages as well

😂😂😂🍌

Haudyerwheesht · 01/05/2017 23:36

I'm vegetarian. It wouldn't even register.

NoMaybe · 01/05/2017 23:38

I have a vegan pal and I have leather seats in my car..... she is always happy for me to drive. 🤔🐄🐂🐄🐂

PlymouthMaid1 · 01/05/2017 23:46

Don't be daft, she won't be eating your jacket.

GirlOverboard · 02/05/2017 00:01

Vegetarians are people who don't eat bits of dead animals. It's perfectly fine for a vegetarian to wear leather shoes or a leather jacket (so long as they don't eat them).

And your friend probably isn't that passionate about animal welfare, otherwise she'd be a vegan rather than a vegetarian.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 02/05/2017 00:09

It's fine so long as she doesn't eat it.

Just don't offer her a sleeve to nibble on or a lick of a lapel...

LittleMissCrazyMama · 02/05/2017 01:49

It's not offensive
☺️. I'm a long time vegetarian and like others said, I wouldn't even notice what you were wearing tbh. Sweet that you didn't want to offend though.,

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/05/2017 03:49

If it wasn't for vegetarians, Doc Marten would have gone out of business.

ddssdd · 02/05/2017 06:06

Most vegetarians (myself, included) wouldn't give a rats behind what you were wearing. Or eating. We ain't holier than thou.

Iggii · 02/05/2017 06:46

Is she Hindu? I would feel a bit funny wearing a coat made of dead-holy-animal to be honest around her in that case.

faithinthesound · 02/05/2017 06:49

There's a difference between going to have lunch with a vegetarian and happening to be wearing a leather jacket, and deliberately wearing a leather jacket AT the vegetarian as a sort of "eff you" to their life choices. As long as you're doing the former and not the latter, you'll be fine.

Natsku · 02/05/2017 07:04

Don't see any reason not to unless she is a Hindu like a pp said in which case it would be more about which animal the leather came from.

AugustCarrot · 02/05/2017 07:06

Seriously?

I'm a vegan and I wouldn't bat an eyelid. Wear what you want!

We would only have an issue if you bought me the leather jacket as a gift as it'd be a bit awkward!

Gallavich · 02/05/2017 07:08

It doesn't make her a more legitimate vegetarian because it's religious reasons you know!
Most vegetarians I know wear leather shoes anyway (I don't, but I am in the minority) and even I accept that other people make different choice to me! Shock
Your choice to eat meat/wear leather has nothing to do with her choice not to.

Undercoverbanana · 02/05/2017 07:20

I'm veggie and wouldn't notice. It's my choice to be veggie and your choice not to be.

LightYears · 02/05/2017 07:41

This has made me laugh. I have a leather sofa and it's crossed my mind if a vegetarian came to my house whether or not it would bother them to sit on it, I thought of maybe I'd put a throw over it Grin

LightYears · 02/05/2017 07:43

I can't see how someone can class themselves as a vegetarian if they wear leather themselves.

SailAwayWithMeHoney · 02/05/2017 07:46

I've been vegetarian for 10 years now, I still wear leather. Leather's inoffensive to a vegetarian. We don't eat meat. Unless you're gonna make her chew on your sleeve you're fine.

SailAwayWithMeHoney · 02/05/2017 07:47

I can't see how someone can class themselves as a vegetarian if they wear leather themselves

Because vegetarians aren't the same as vegans.

DoItTooJulia · 02/05/2017 07:47

You sound like a thoughtful friend. There is no need to worry-most vegetarians really aren't that precious. And besides, she lives in a world where she's likely to come across people doing all sorts that don't fit with her religion or lifestyle choices and tolerance of those things are the key to living a happy life!

AppleOfMyEye10 · 02/05/2017 07:51

Seriously? You sound absolutely ridiculous rather than thoughtful. Are you just concerned about this one friend or anyone else you come into contact with?

I'm actually laughing at how ridiculous you sound.

WellErrr · 02/05/2017 07:51

Just warn her if she starts eating it.

TheMonkeyandthePlywoodViolin · 02/05/2017 07:54

Shes a good friend?

Ask her.
