to wear leather when meeting a vegetarian?

My office is a casual office and people wear leather jackets. My friend, who sits in the next cubicle and with whom I go out for lunch sometimes, is a vegetarian.

AIBU to wear a leather jacket?

Because vegetarians aren't the same as vegans. That doesn't explain why a vegetarian would still were leather.

WildKiwi · 02/05/2017 08:19

Veggie DH is laughed his head off at the thought it was vegans that went the whole hog comment. Just went through a mental list of the leather products DH has (shoes, jacket, sofa...)

I think this sort of thing really depends on the person and their reasons for being vegetarian. DH didn't bat an eye about me eating bacon sandwiches for lunch and the kitchen still smelling of them when he got home later. But I wouldn't have done that if I didn't know he doesn't mind. I don't think most people would worry too much about your jacket, but if you're concerned I'd just ask if it bothers her. Nothing wrong with being thoughtful and asking

SexlessinSeattle · 02/05/2017 08:35

It doesn't make her a more legitimate vegetarian because it's religious reasons you know!

Maybe. I just think if it's for religious reasons then there is a deeper reason for her being a vegetarian rather than if she's vegetarian because she feels it is healthier.

I'm actually laughing at how ridiculous you sound.

I'm glad to have made you happy with my "ridiculousness".

I know we're all massively taking the piss gently ribbing the op but I did genuinely have to deal with a woman at work who demanded to be moved because she was vegetarian and didn't want to hang her coat next to her colleague who had a leather jacket.

She was batshit though in almost every way.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 02/05/2017 10:23

moving

I went out for lunch with a friend who didnt know i was vegetarian (pescatarian now but dont eat much fish)

She ran through all the meat suggestions on the menu...out load

And i said no i dont eat meat in a distracted way while trying to block out her talking so i could think of whet i wanted to eat Smile

And then she went 'but that means i cant eat any meat Sad'

Confused
emmyrose2000 · 02/05/2017 10:43

Is this for real?

I don't let other people's religious or dietary choices dictate how I live my life (allergies aside). If someone wants to take offense at the clothes I wear, that's their problem, not mine.

Vroomster · 02/05/2017 10:48

I remember my DB telling me a story about Paul McCartney going apeshit about there being leather sofas out the back in a particular arena when on tour. He demanded they all had to be changed. He also said he was a bit of a dick.

LaContessaDiPlump · 02/05/2017 11:03

I'm a bit surprised at how many people seem genuinely overwhelmed with mirth at the op. To me it seems like an entirely logical and considerate thing for her to consider!

OP, I grew up in a very religious country and it was incumbent upon us (the visitors in that country) to behave appropriately (conservative dress etc). Later on, when I first came to the UK as a student, I was in my student flat and wearing something low-cut/strappy on a Sunday afternoon. My friends suggested that we go out, and I said I'd have to change because it was Sunday and I didn't want to offend anyone for whom it was a significant holy day. OMG they took the piss...... I got the message, but am still a bit Confused at being seen as a nutter because I didn't want to accidentally offend anyone.

As I've said before, you sound nice :)

LaContessaDiPlump · 02/05/2017 11:03

Considerate thing to consider..... ignore me Confused

Pinkheart5917 · 02/05/2017 11:09

Yes I'd wear the leather jacket, I wear leather out to lunch with my vegan friends often and sometimes when we are out I have cheese or a coffee with cows milk Shock

What people do in their own life's in fair enough, but I will not change the way I go about my life becuase of it

user1471443913 · 02/05/2017 11:11

I'm a veggie and don't mind friends wearing leather - almost everyone does. I choose not to wear/buy any leather or have leather sofas etc but that's my choice. I do think it's odd that vegetarians would choose to wear it but assume they're veggie as they don't like meat rather than for ethical reasons.

PhyllisNights · 02/05/2017 11:14

You should absolutely wear it.

I'm a vegetarian (I go vegan some days£
). I have three real leather jackets. One of my vegan friends doesn't particularly like it, but if I stopped my life to accommodate her vegan wishes, I'd never live!

I grew up in a very religious country too. :)

The word vegetarian refers to diet. However, in light of your post I will now stop using that term for myself unless I have to fill in a form with any dietary requirements, with an addendum that I may be carrying a leather Radley handbag I purchased from the Red Cross Shop. Fantastic condition. Only a fiver. Think one of the volunteers hashed up the pricing - although I did point it out so what the heck.

I am not a vegetarian. I just don't eat meat.

LaContessaDiPlump · 02/05/2017 11:44

Haha, maybe that's the common link! We've been brainwashed into scanning ahead for possible offence Grin

jmh740 · 02/05/2017 21:38

I'm veggie have been for almost 30 years it wouldn't bother me if you wore a leather jacket. When I was younger I wouldn't have worn leather shoes but as I've got older and my feet have got problems I've resorted to wearing clarks leather shoes they are the only pair of shoes I've found I can wear comfortably. I do sit on my parents leather sofa but wouldn't buy one myself.
