To douche with tea tree oil before a smear test?!

floraeasy · 12/04/2017 17:40

Was talking with friends today. I have a smear soon. Just mentioned I was going to pick up some tea-tree oil on the way home. They asked what it was for so I told them I douche before these appointments.

I occasionally do it after sex too. In fact I try not to have sex in the few days leading up to an internal.

They were Shock.

Now I feel weird Blush To me, it's like giving my teeth an extra good brush, flossing, mouthwash before seeing dentist. Just preparing myself, you know?

A lot of women in the US seem to have this as part of their regular routine.

By the way, I've been doing this for a few years now and no gynae problems so far.

Shock no way would I be putting tea tree oil anywhere near my Vag what that must do to your friendly bacteria

maras2 · 12/04/2017 19:04

Me too AF
I worked in Gynae Oncology in the 70's/80's and douches were only used following removal of radio active Caesium, and all of the packing that went with it,for the treatment of some types of cervical cancer.
After sometimes a week of this treatment, including the labia being sutured closed, patients were desperate to feel 'fresh' again but we only ever used warm water.
Anything else will kill the Doderlein Bacillus which keeps the vagina PH at a healthy level.
< faints at the thought of Tea Tree oil >

What in the name of...

KickAssAngel · 12/04/2017 19:17

I live in the US. I don't know and have never heard of anyone douching. I've never noticed products in the stores, and I don't know anyone who sees a gynae unless they have a problem and have been referred.

Don't confuse Hollywood for reality. There's a reason why it's called LaLa Land.

DJBaggySmalls · 12/04/2017 19:18

Tea Tree is not safe for internal use, you shouldn't use it on mucus membranes at all.

ThoraGruntwhistle · 12/04/2017 19:18

Could you not just have a bath? Squirting water or any other ingredients up yourself is just a spectacularly bad idea.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 12/04/2017 19:21

A friend who used to be a practice nurse told me all that actually bothered her in smear tests was stinky feet.

Ericaequites · 12/04/2017 19:21

Lysol douching was used as a form of birth control in the United States into the 1950s. Sears, a massive mail order catalog sold more coventional vaginal spermacidal jellies, describing them as personal hygiene products. Until the Supreme Court case in Griswold v. Connecticut in 1965, doctors could refuse birth control information to married women on moral grounds. The case of Eisenstadt v. Baird in 1972 assured unmarried persons the right to learn about, receive, or purchase birth control. Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island were some of the worst places for this, as the Catholic Church had undue moral strictures on state law. Condoms were one of those things easier to buy in New Hampshire, like tattoos, fireworks, lottery tickets, and abortions. The above is more than you wanted to know.
The kitty is a self cleaning thing, like the domestic cats in my house. A gynecologist told me to wash the labia without soap, but use Ivory, a very mild soap, instead.

NightWanderer · 12/04/2017 19:22

A nurse once told me that if I wouldn't be prepared to put something in my mouth I shouldn't put it in my vagina.

Think that's quite a good rule to live by.

It's a bizarre rule to live by! Do you put tampons in your mouth? Do you put carrots in your vagina?

Brush your teeth, don't brush your vagina!

Wando1986 · 12/04/2017 19:25

Yeah OP. As everyone else has said... do NOT do this. And please stop f*cking about with your vaginal flora otherwise you may find you need more than a smear one day.

FrancesHaHa · 12/04/2017 19:26

A nurse once told me not to have a bath before a smear test - it messes up the results. She said shower or wash only. So I'd imagine douching with anything would be as bad.

TheCraicDealer · 12/04/2017 19:30

I've never been one for excessive fanny sprucing up, but a good rule I saw her on MN was "if you can't see it in a mirror, don't wash it". It came from a thread about a poster with a little girl who kept getting recurrent thrush- it transpired the mum was being really too thorough in her personal hygiene, which was clearly making the issue way worse. I was wincing reading that thread.

I watched Sausage Party recently (like Toy Story but based on food in a supermarket) and the baddy in it was literally a douche.

MrsMeeseeks · 12/04/2017 19:41

American women have annual smear tests at the gynaecologist, AFAIK. That's why they see them more regularly than we do.

Unicorn81 · 12/04/2017 19:49

All i can think about while reading this is sausage party! Didnt watch the whole film but the douce bottle was hillarious! 😂😂

BillyDaveysDaughter · 12/04/2017 19:50

Patchouli that made me lol soooo hard.

Oh, so yes...dont squirt stuff up there Flora, just leave it. Semen doesn't take long to come down...try getting comfortable with your DH/DP, perhaps just dozing off to sleep in a warm post-coital haze, then give a gentle cough. That normally forces out a few litres.

floraeasy · 12/04/2017 19:54

.... hang on a sec ! ... you do realise Friday is a bank holiday?! Surely no routine appointments this Friday?

My appointment is not Friday. Changed that detail to help with the anonymity - I hope Blush

Speaking of douches, remember a disturbing number of American women voted for Trump.
