To think current fashion is f*cking hideous?

Probably BU but I went shopping the other week as I needed a few tops. I saw:
Bright yellow playsuits
Hideous tops with the shoulders cut out
Skirts that look more like belts
Jeans with so many rips that they are indecent
Tops that aren't even decent (too short)
Cardigans with no sleeves (why, you wear a cardigan if it's cold surely)
AIBU to think that it's hideous and nobody would want to be seen dead in it?

See, I like cold shoulder tops (sorry) for several reasons: I have nice shoulders

I read somewhere (I think it was Joan Collins who said it) that it's OK to bare the shoulders because the shoulders are the last place on a woman's body to age and don't sag or wrinkle or droop.

She's right! I just had a look at my shoulder and it looks young even though the rest of me looks like shit

Perhaps we should embrace the cold shoulder look.

I'm mid-50s and my style has barely changed in 40 years. I liked cotton and white and navy and flattering shapes then so I still like them, I'm not going to change now and suddenly crave frills, florals and polyester. The only floral I've ever owned was a Liberty shirt, at 17.

So, given there has always been "fashion" there has also always been style, so you could be stylish with just a light dusting of fashion, maybe in your accessories or hair colour.

Now the whole offering is "fashion"-based, and batshit crazy. This is what we're saying.

My current WTAF are those fake sleeves as worn by Melania Trump.

I think I've seen it elsewhere but can't remember where.

"Bardot tops baffle me. Who is buying these? It's too cold! Even when the warm weather comes, who can be arsed having to deal with the bra situation? "

I wouldn't have a problem with a Bardot top if I lived in a hot country. It would need to be about 27 celsius, so not going to happen here, but if your breasts aren't large it's easy enough to wear a strapless bra.

Cold shoulder tops are a completely different matter though. Horrible.

Not sure if anyone else has suggested Lands End? I like their jeans. They come in straight / boot cut / skinny shapes and low-rise / mid-rise /high-rise, as well as different lengths or they can leave them unfinished for you. And cords for the winter or chinos. But their sizes come a bit big.

londonmummy1966 · 09/04/2017 18:30

I went shopping for some summery clothes yesterday with 13yo fashion victim/stylist with me... She dragged me into Monsoon (so she could go to Accessorise) and I found some really nice linen separates. I am usually an all navy and black Toast girl and these were similar but with a more flattering cut and about half the price! DD even said a couple of them looked nice on me.

Havanaclub · 09/04/2017 18:42

I only ever buy naice things for parties and weddings. And TBH I have about ten outfits that I love, that fit me well and will take me anywhere, so I'm ok in that department. Feck the current fashion trends, I will wear what I know I look good in, that is fit, fabric, length and sleevies!

I am done with working since last year (voluntarily) so I can wear whatever the heck I like now and it's a kind of uniform. Loose trousers all year round, darker in winter, lighter in Summer. Tapered to the ankles are so flattering for my shape, so whenever I see any I buy in bulk! I never got on with jeans, so I don't bother.

Currently on a Primark bender. Happy days, found lovely loose light material tapered trousers (not harem and not see through) with yikes..... elastic waist, but you'd never know! They are just sooooo comfortable to wear and they do NOT look like PJ bottoms either. Less than a tenner so I can discard in time but I like them! Everyone has admired them which is great. As a slightly older, paunchy gal, I wear what is comfortable but not cheap looking like leggings. Feck who wears leggings outdoors!

Tops I have tons of them. Some nice for over the trousers some cheap n cheerful for a summers day.

I never followed fashion. If you wear what you feel good in it will look great on you.

Glad to see the horror of most people towards the shyte they have in the shops at the moment.

But I'm sorted!

malificent7 · 09/04/2017 19:01

I love the Joules harbour tops.

lljkk · 09/04/2017 19:09

H&M was the (only) place where we found summery dresses.
Skirts were a struggle, though. New Look had lots of leather skirts (wtaf).
DD has ordered some skirts online.

terrifyingtoes · 09/04/2017 19:17

I actually really like much of what's on offer at the mo, It's all about how you style it.
Saying that my DP generally reacts with a 'WTF are you wearing' face when he sees me Grin
Wear what you wear with confidence & screw what other people think.

ElspethFlashman · 09/04/2017 19:18

I just bought the Next Jersey tapered pants recommended on here last week. OMG amazing. Basically pyjamas but cool enough to wear outside. Such a good purchase.

PossumInAPearTree · 09/04/2017 19:18

I wear leggings outdoors!

ChangelingToday · 09/04/2017 19:18

I mentioned to my early thirty something friends that I thought those tops with cut off shoulders/off the shoulders were vile, they completely disagreed, said they love them. I presumed I'm just getting old (42)

Destinysdaughter · 09/04/2017 19:19

Yes but they don't remember them from the first time round!

Persephone31 · 09/04/2017 19:20

Anyone tried Oasis and Warehouse? Oftrn a few nice tops available from both

PossumInAPearTree · 09/04/2017 19:20

Really don't understand the tops with horizontal frills across the boobs. Now I am DD so the last thing I want or need is extra volume in this area. Maybe it looks better if you have smaller norks?

ChocolateSherberts2017 · 09/04/2017 19:25

Can't we all get together and design a mumsnet clothing line called vipers clothing. The range will include:
No ripped jeans
No cold shouldered tops wtf?
No belly tops for the over 10 yr olds
No frilly bits in weird places
No lace up tops and bottoms

Feel free to add to this list
I've got a wedding to go to next weekend and just came back from town with bloody nothing.

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 09/04/2017 19:27

I saw a truly baffling garment on a young girl today. Imagine a sleeveless gingham blouse, with collar and buttons. The type that Daisy Duke would have worn, tied in a knot at the front. It was like that, but it had a great big frill across the chest, and around the arms like a gypsy top. What the hell was that???

Then I saw a woman in a zebra print jumpsuit. She was tall and slim but it still made her arse look like two watermelons in a sack.

origamiwarrior · 09/04/2017 19:28

Even the stuff in high-end, age-appropriate outlets is so unflattering. I received the 'Hush' catalogue through the door the other day. Not a single thing I would wear. The clothes looked drab/boring/weird/shapeless on the model, so no chance for a mere mortal like me!

Is there anything on this page that would actually look nice on a normal person (i.e. someone not in model land?)

I honestly don't know why you are all struggling to find jeans. I have stocked up on these beauties.

GlitterGlue · 09/04/2017 19:31

Can we add nothing shaped like a sack? And ban the colour Elastoplast pink.

I've had a mooch round town, and am now having a mooch online. I can find bugger all I'd actually want to buy.

Havanaclub · 09/04/2017 19:32

@possum in a pear tree.

You are forgiven. LOL.

Havanaclub · 09/04/2017 19:33

@UnicornButtplug

The trend for bows is never ending. But those jeans are just........ well hilarious!

welshbutenglish · 09/04/2017 19:37

ForAlltheSaints I have to disagree about France. I spend a lot of time there and find most of the clothes available absolutely hideous - too many white jeans, gold zips, weird patches and pointless fringing, fake pockets and just plain fashion weirdness!! I have just turned 40 and am not ashamed to say I stick with Fat Face, Esprit, department stores and the occasional dip into French Connection (ironic!) when I'm feeling brave Smile

PossumInAPearTree · 09/04/2017 19:39

In my defence I do think "leggings as tights not as trousers" and make sure I have a long tunic type top covering my bum! I'm probably stuck in a decade old fashion thing!
