To wonder how people will work on planes?

The new rules about no laptops in the cabin seem very restrictive for people who are travelling on business.

AIBU to think it's too restrictive? Surely a laptop bomb anywhere on the plane will cause significant damage?

Meh, it's not all planes, by a very long stretch. Most people with laptops on planes seem to be watching crappy tv anyway.
And it's not to do with the relative damage a bomb would do in the cabin v hold, more the extra level of sophistication that a hold bomb would have to have- timer etc.

It's only on flights from a handful of countries, so not that big an inconvenience for most business travellers.

DH flew whilst working on his laptop yesterday (AA to Denver). When he takes long day time flights it helps to pass the time and reduces workload when he gets there. It also means he can hit the ground running when he gets there; also that he can take his laptop when he just goes somewhere for the day or overnight and takes cabin baggage only.

Do you have a link? I'm interested to see if it's likely to affect him. Not this trip evidently but next time.

I'm more concerned how many laptops will actually make it though hold baggage unstolen or unbroken. What do you do for a meeting when your laptop has been stolen?

I suppose the positive side is it might encourage more people to do remote conferencing.

People will have to get over it I'm afraid. So what if it 'passes the time' the terror threat is real and we should be pleased action is being taken

I think they need to get over it. Safety has to come first.

DH manages airports. If you can fly there, you can work there. But yes I take your point they're less obvious business routes than eg LHR>JFK.

Are they still allowed to bring the laptop in hold luggage? I have a colleague coming from Turkey to here tomorrow and I'm wondering if he will need a laptop here

mail UK government is imposing it on the Turkey - UK route in coming days but definitely before 25th. Turkish Airlines is apparently spitting blood. It's a major business route both direct and interconnecting via Istanbul.

I think it's applicable to all flights from Ataturk, indefinitely.

Actually I was planning to take the flight from Dubai to Orlando which is 15 hours 50 minutes. As I am visually impaired and very dependent on my iPad for many things, this is actually a very big inconvenience. So much so, that I will no longer take that flight.

It's all rather confusing at the moment.

But any work prep in the flight will need to be done in hard copy. Just like it always used to be.

Or you sleep (so you're rested and ready to do business on arrival), play games on a non-banned console, watch the inflight movie, read an improving novel. All the things those of us who were fling on business in the 1980s used to do

Please don't tell me this applies on the flights from emirates to the UK as well? I thought these rules only apply to flights traveling to the USA. I frequently fly through Dubai on my way to Asia.

Things will get broken or stolen!

My laptop is worth £2,000, my phone is £800 and my camera equipment is worth £10,000. I need all that for my job. If I flew somewhere and anything went missing or broken it would be a nightmare. I carry it all.

I have flown to one of those countries and back carrying all that equipment in last few years.

They also said no DVD players. A lot of the in-flight entertainment is now touchscreen so quite inconvenient if you can't see. I have a tiny bit of vision but my nose touches the screen every time I try to use it on my own. So I really really really depend on my iPad and other things that I can use easily and independently.

All flights Doha and Dubai to UK or US are hit

Love how people don't think there are business people flying those routes. Because no Jordanian can possibly work in business What you mean is no British people will be going there on business (also untrue) Funnily enough not everything is about how it affects us...

It will be interesting to see how insurance companies respond to this, usually they wouldn't cover a laptop in your gold luggage.
