To wonder how people will work on planes?

The new rules about no laptops in the cabin seem very restrictive for people who are travelling on business.

AIBU to think it's too restrictive? Surely a laptop bomb anywhere on the plane will cause significant damage?

Hold

MadisonAvenue · 21/03/2017 19:54

I wondered that welshweasel

hellokittymania · 21/03/2017 20:00

I thought it was in response to the laptop bomb on the plane leaving soMalia which took place one year ago

SaltySeaBird · 21/03/2017 20:03

I don't care about not being able to work on the plane. It's a minor inconvenience although losing my Kindle to the hold would be a pain.

It's the thought of my very expensive equipment being lost or stolen that concerns me. I've flown enough to know that bags get treated like shit, locking them is pointless as locks are just broken off and if you plastic wrap (awful for the environment) it screams valuables and the whole thing goes missing. Plus the normal most and mislaid baggage dramas ...

It could cost me a fortune...

glueandstick · 21/03/2017 20:03

Fairly sure there is a rule that lithium batteries aren't allowed in the hold.

Well be interesting how they work that one out.

Ta1kinPeace · 21/03/2017 20:06

Never seen that - fly with camera kit regularly

hellokittymania · 21/03/2017 20:08

I was told no lithium batteries were allowed in luggage last week when I flew to the Philippines and as I had quite a few things with batteries I had to check what kind they were.

Ta1kinPeace · 21/03/2017 20:09

well that rules out gopro cameras and lots of things with rechargeables like shavers ....

BlueFolly · 21/03/2017 20:10

Pen and paper?

Hulababy · 21/03/2017 20:13

Some lithium batteries can be kept in hold luggage but only under a stain power, and only inside the device, no spares.
You'd still be able to take spare but in your hand luggage only - there are still some restrictions though.

Salty you can download the kindle app onto your phone and use that instead. It is more readable than I expected.

maddening · 21/03/2017 20:17

Hopefully they have these in holds now

The list of countries is from the US ban and is for flights to the US. The UK is expected to follow suit but their rules may not exactly mirror those of the US.

So it probably won't affect the majority but it will be interesting to see the rules if you fly to a destination with the equipment from the UK or US and what you are expected to do on the back.

hellokittymania · 21/03/2017 20:19

Sally, I totally understand and for me my technology is everything for example reading a book, I do on iPad taking phone numbers, finding my way around the airport, our use my iPad. I really do use it for nearly everything. This does not apply to phones as well does it. I might just have to splurge on an up-to-date iPhone that I can take with me as I only have an old iPhone.

And for those of you who are wondering. Brielle is nearly nonexistent as everything has switched to technology. There are apps that scan and read books, Apps that connect you with volunteers who can see to help you find information or be my eyes as the app is called. There are apps that you can take a picture and The picture will be described to you. I am actually really upset. Are use my iPad to take pictures of gate numbers and other things and then I can enlarge it. So yes it isn't just that I can't work on a plane , it's like cutting off my legs. And what if when I arrive my equipment gets broken or stolen. I can't just do things in hardcopy

THe UK ban his the big three middle east hubs
nightmare

hellokittymania · 21/03/2017 20:23

Does anybody know what electronic devices we can bring? Are we allowed audiobooks or machines that play audiobooks?

Ta1kinPeace · 21/03/2017 20:27

In your hold luggage, probably. In your hand luggage - goodness knows !

Toooldtobearsed · 21/03/2017 20:28

Is it not possible that a Turkish bomber might, just might, have a lightbulb moment and fly to a non restricted country i.e. Amsterdam, then pick up a seperate flight to the UK?

These 'rules' are a farce.

If you are going to ban, it should be a blanket ban or nothing at all.

But then as we know, terrorists are stupid and will probably simply shrug their shoulders and say ' back to the drawing board then chaps'.

MrsHathaway · 21/03/2017 20:29

The BBC says phones will be permitted, including larger phones such as the iPhone 7.

KenAdams · 21/03/2017 20:30

Well no its not a choice of whether you can work or get blown up as your laptop is still allowed on the plane. It's more if it's going to be on a plane anyway, what harm is there in using it, although I take t he point of planes being hacked actually as that didn't occur to me.

Apologies - www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-39343971

And LOTS of people do business either in or through Dubai Hmm

MadisonAvenue · 21/03/2017 20:35

I'm not at all knowledgable about technology but couldn't a plane's system be hacked from anywhere?

PhilODox · 21/03/2017 20:42

Can you imagine how many Britons this will affect? Lots coming back from Hajj, with devices, I should have thought (though not this month, obviously!).

paxillin · 21/03/2017 20:46

Maybe we should all fly naked and without luggage just to make sure.

kingscrossnoodle · 21/03/2017 20:47

Well no its not a choice of whether you can work or get blown up as your laptop is still allowed on the plane. There are huge factors involved in the decision to make this security call, it hasn't been done lightly.
