Good for business though... :o

Shares in the Seattle-based chain traded around $42.70 before the president's 10:50 a.m. tweet, then fell to $42.48 afterward in a flurry of trading. The shares recovered to around $42.80 by midday

Trump is blackmailing companies like Nordstrom, showing he can crush their stocks w/ a single tweet if they dont do business w/ his family.

GingerIvy · 08/02/2017 17:55

Not a clue merry Decision??

originalbiglymavis · 08/02/2017 17:55

Why is this a surprise though? He's a businessman, innit?

EASY. Democrats.

CussingQuim · 08/02/2017 18:10

I'm already noticing Trump-fatigue around me. People are no longer shocked at all. The world keeps spinning. He can do whatever he wants...

Or...if you knew what his tweets were going to be, you can hedge your bets. sell short and make a killing.

I work in an IT related field. I don't hand over my passwords to anyone. There is no reason at all for them to have the passwords, they could just do a search or request access to your feeds.

Exactly, there that is just scare mongering, they do not need your passwords anyway, pretty much all big social media platforms are pretty much in cahoots and if not the NSA etc have everything anyway, no one was interested in kicking up a fuss at the time

Deejoda · 08/02/2017 18:15

Ginger I don't know why it makes it worse that it is a Buddhist majority that is doing this. Buddhists are so non-violent historicallySad

I am not convinced that the story about asking for social media passwords is true. They may decide to look at your social media posts and history as part of screening, but not ask for passwords.

Hilary Clinton as posted a tweet in support of Warren

The whole issue of who is allowed into a country is interesting. Tourism and trade are very important - IF countries don't let in people who 'have an issue with their leader / policies', then there might well be retaliation on those people from countries who impose such a policy.

It's well known that you don't criticise the King in Thailand. Saudi, North Korea and other countries have laws about criticism of people as well that you need to follow if you go there.

The UK does not want 'undesirables' here. Nor does the 'US'.

It would be interesting to see the threshold where someone becomes 'undesirable'.

OP posts:
FantasticButtocks · 08/02/2017 18:29

I notice the UK is absent on those videos... Maybe because Britain was the original 'ooh! Ooh! Me next! Me next!' when TM went over with indecent haste to make sure everyone knew just how very special our special relationship with USA is. Perhaps the Netherlands was taking the piss out of Britain just as much.

amispartacus · 08/02/2017 18:36

People applying for a US visa could soon have to hand over their social media passwords

The story

www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/us-visa-applicants-social-media-passwords-before-entering-country_uk_589af5e1e4b0a1dcbd04024e

Kelly told a hearing of the House of Homeland Security Committee: “We’re looking at some enhanced or some additional screening.

“We may want to get on their social media, with passwords.

It’s very hard to truly vet these people in these countries, the seven countries... but if they come in, we want to say, what websites do they visit, and give us your passwords. So we can see what they do on the internet.”

He added: “If they don’t want to cooperate, then they don’t come in to the United States.”

No decision has yet been made, but tighter screening will be implemented in the future, Kelly said.

So that's the story - people FROM THOSE 7 COUNTRIES could have to give their password

Always go to the source and clarify the headline.

Anyone else think that maybe Trump's obsession with terrorism is a distraction away from the fact that he can't 'bring back jobs' as the world is changing.. the US should have had a president like Elon Musk who talks about humans being inter-planetary species and colonising Mars, he's interested in driverless cars, the hyperloop (transport literally under the ground). I mean awesome ideas that go with the technological era and are driving humanity forward. Instead Trump wants to bring back coal, and increase carbon emissions in a technological era. Maybe that's why he's so intent on war because it's the only thing he can actually do to bring unity, i.e unity against 'enemies'.

I'm sure there is loads of stuff we agree on Grin

BiglyBadgers · 08/02/2017 18:45

I think Kelly is conflating a number of different things in that story. There is a difference between social media and what websites people visit and 'what they do on the internet'. That would involve a number of different passwords if they are going to access that information from people's devices or remotely, not just social media. It also doesn't make sense in that it expects a terrorist to just hand over the details of the anonymous accounts and devices they use for planning their dodgy dealings.

Of course I would ever discount people doing pointless and crazy stuff...

amispartacus · 08/02/2017 18:47

Maybe that's why he's so intent on war because it's the only thing he can actually do to bring unity, i.e unity against 'enemies

I got this..

The social atmosphere is that of a besieged city, where the possession of a lump of horseflesh makes the difference between wealth and poverty. And at the same time the consciousness of being at war, and therefore in danger, makes the handing-over of all power to a small caste seem the natural, unavoidable condition of survival.

Yes - it's 1984 again.

Always go to the source and clarify the headline.

Yeah its hufpo so not exactly known for pushing out op-eds disguised as news, the article is littered with "could" and "may", so I stand by that it is scare mongering.

With the NSA and 5 Eyes network no one would need to pass over there social media accounts, if this is used it will be additional screening against anyone outside the 5 eyes network, not that it cant take a minute for someone to set up an alternate account but when inside the US however sites will be flagged up

I've got to read 1984 and We and Brave New World and the Iron Heel. Lots of good recommendations on these threads

Also for anyone who hasn't watched it, definitely recommend watching the film Brazil with Michael Palin
