Just coming in to say - I went to a protest against Trump on this Saturday! There was a decent turnout of around 1000 people, though not as many as the 3000-4000 in my city who turned out last Monday to protest.
However, the local paper carried a story about it, and the comments to the story are the MOST depressing thing. I suspect many are motivated by racism. In some cases this is explicit ('Oh, look at all the ethnics protesting, GO HOME MUSLIMS' or 'We need Trump here to sort out the immigrants')
. In others, it's implicit - from "Aren't there better causes like Help the Aged?" to "GET A JOB!" (The protest was on a Saturday).
It really depressed me. It seems like half of the people in my city are just horrible racists, and those of us who are ready to stand up to fascism are really in a minority. It also made me wonder whether protesting in this way really achieves much - it clearly alienated many of these people (though I suspect the bigotry of anyone who can say 'go home' to a fellow British citizen on the grounds of their skin colour runs deep anyway).
