I don't understand why the attack at the Louvre is a worry (brown face) but the attack in Quebec isn't (white face).

Simple innit?

MrDacresEUSubsidy · 05/02/2017 17:32

It must be hard for an educator to remain neutral

This. Yet it is so important!

Why I would make a rubbish teacher. My entire class would go home at the end of the day and tell their families that they'd learned that Donald Trump is a bellend.

Me neither. It's cognitive dissonance. I would love someone to ask Trump quite persistantly this question:

Q1: Christian are minorities in some countries and are hated by some people in those countries. They have been shot, murdered and worse by extremists. Do you agree that's terrible and we should be doing all we can to protect them?

Q2: Should someone who has a hatred of a religious group be banned from coming to the USA?

Q3: The Quebec attack was an attack on a minority religious group in a democracy by an extremist? How would you protect Muslims in the USA from extremist actions?

skimmed through a few chomsky interviews and he seems broadly hopeful he speaks slowly so can be listened to on 1.5 x speed to save time

Voyage - there was a great article a while back about the rise of no-platforming and the corresponding threat to critical thought within Universities. The fact that some students are demanding 'trigger warnings' on course content, or the right not to have to be taught it at all. It's extremely worrying - and how do you reconcile this with the fact that actually the world is not a very nice place? But if someone refuses to acknowledge this, learn about it and face it, then how can we hope to overcome it?

Do it subtly...

Politics: Look at this tweet. Can you explain the principles of the Constitution?

You let them draw their own conclusions.

It must be hard for an educator to remain neutral - as they should

You just reminded me of my RE teacher who was a vicar's wife. Neutral she was not. I used to go to church and Sunday school every week as a child, but consciously became an atheist at an early age. We had some pretty heated discussions when it came to abortion and creationism I can tell you

MrDacresEUSubsidy · 05/02/2017 17:43

Found it - in the Atlantic Magazine

BiglyBadgers · 05/02/2017 17:44

I imagine there are lecturers all over the world who have hastily rewritten their lesson plans over the past few weeks. This is just an opportunity too good to miss. My lecturers would have had a field day with it. Grin

amispartacus · 05/02/2017 17:47

OTOH - should a teacher provide an alternative POV?

I remember working with some children who were very adamant that God created the world. No doubt because it had been taught to them through prayers and daily collective worship.

Part of me wanted to say 'well actually many people believe in the Big Bang' explanation.

I do worry about Trump and his religious devotion. We had the Crusades and that was bad - a war inspired by religion.

MrDacresEUSubsidy part of the issue is that now students (or their parents) are paying for their uni course they feel they have a right to make demands that they never would have made before. This goes across the whole university experience, not just course content and who can talk at the university.

Also universities are judged so much on their student satisfaction rating that even a small number of students can hold a uni to ransom by threatening to give them bad ratings, which will have a huge impact on their reputation and income.

English - I've just reread Lord of The Flies again on the back of another thread. Analyse it in the context of recent events.

Photography - here are some pictures of a recent event. Without using photoshop, present them in a way that suits your agenda. You might want to crop them, zoom out, use the ones from a lower angle.

Your mark will be determined on how well someone believes you.

English - using 140 characters, explain your view on economics, the role of the global economy, the nature of trade, tariffs, the value of the dollar and the nature of supply and demands.

Ethics - should men have a say on women's reproductive rights

Philosophy - look at this picture of men signing this picture. What do you think each man is thinking?

DT - design a wall.

You forgot a bit, so I fixed it for you:

DT - design a wall. Given the physical impossibility of Trump's plans, you may resort to 'skyhooks' and other confabulated structural aids in your design.

Well, he's either got Melania confined to barracks for the day [insert salacious comments here], or originalmavis was right about him being a Wee Freer.
