Ha Trump and Melania look like waxworks in that pic from the Guardian!

Trump very punchable in that photo.

merrymouse · 05/02/2017 16:23

The thing is, all the pomp and circumstance is going to have to be very much behind closed doors. If people are prepared to go to antarctica to protest, they'll certainly go to Balmoral.

I have difficulty believing that a state visit will even be possible if he carries on like this for the next few months.

As far as I can see there hasn't been much disruption at his Scottish golf courses yet, (and I think people will bear in mind that the people who work there need jobs). However, if he carries on like this that is bound to change.

originalmavis · 05/02/2017 16:25

I think that is Madame Tussauds isn't it?

Wouldn't make a speech if you begged me, you bunch of poo poo heads. (And they begged me and begged me, but I said 'no, I shan't do there' and they all cried and cried, but I showed them).

lionheart · 05/02/2017 16:29

I keep thinking about this image. Don't know why.

On MTP, VP Pence uses attack at Louvre by terrorist from Egypt to defend the EO -- which EXEMPTS Egypt (& other govts that give $$ to DJT)!

woman12345 · 05/02/2017 16:37

GingerIvy I'm still a bit confused about that Louvre thing. And definitely worried about how it might affect French elections.

SenecaFalls · 05/02/2017 16:38

From that article: "It has even been suggested he wants to play golf with the Queen at Balmoral."

Now there's a picture.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 05/02/2017 16:40

Does the Queen even play golf?

GingerIvy · 05/02/2017 16:41

I suspect she might like to swing a few golf clubs... whether or not she'll be playing golf at the time is up for debate. Grin

AcrossthePond55 · 05/02/2017 16:44

Ok, just this one thing and I promise no more religion. I just found this passage from Proverbs (Ch 6, v 16-19) to be rather interesting. Remind you of anyone?

"There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers."

It's too long to be tweeted to Trump, dammit. But I expect that even if I could it would be too long to hold his toddler attention span. That seems to be limited to 129 characters!

amispartacus · 05/02/2017 16:46

I suppose it depends on how you want to spin it.

"The suspect arrived in France on 26 January after obtaining a tourist visa in Dubai, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said on Friday. He is believed to have bought two machetes after arriving."

He was an Egyptian.
He was able to buy a machete.

So - what does that mean?

Should we ban all Muslims from going to a country because a Muslim carried out an attack involving a machete?

But then why not ban any member of a group because someone belonging to that group carries out an attack?

Should we stop access to weapons?

What made him do it? What role did the 'situation' play in that attack?

We have had an MP killed in the UK. I fear we will see a judge killed soon in the US. We are seeing and will continue to see a rise in attacks fuelled by the divisiveness of the world.

France is already under lockdown.

I don't know how you battle Americans on large scale a) not understanding complex basic issues b) refusing to be educated about these issues by anyone who knows what they are talking about because scientists, doctors, lawyers, judges, investigative journalists etc are elitist and not for the common man.

That seems a very Teflon defence. I am utterly unconvinced the Trump presidency will collapse. His supporters are eating this shit up.

I was very disturbed by a short piece on CNN covering the riots at Berkley. Instead of focusing on the odious hate speaker being boycotted, they focused on how the left leaning student body were curbing the free speech of the republican student body Confused The republican students were putting themselves forth as an oppressed and silenced minority (which is pretty rich). Still, it was very reflective of how legitimized the lowest common denominator is feeling right now. Racist? That is ones protected POV now, not some dank thing shamed to the side by the elitist left. Scary times folks, scary times.

That is what I meant by The Aftermath. You need to bear that in mind, constantly.

Sadly it will probably end up that the Louvre attacker had several screws loose.

Should we therefore stop people with suspecteded/history of mental illness from being legally able to buy...

Oh hang on, isn't there a thing in the US currently that its deemed discriminatory to extra vet people buying guns with a history of mental illness?

Formerpigwrestler9 · 05/02/2017 17:20

I wonder if Trump's initial moves were a strategy aimed at consolidating support from those who are on his wavelength?
phase 2 will see him constrained and moderated that way his core supporters will feel that he would do what they want if only he was allowed and others will get behind him when they see him being more measured

MrDacresEUSubsidy · 05/02/2017 17:21

Ami absolutely agree that we should teach the negative as well as positives of religion. I don't agree with women covering their hair - in Islam or Orthodox Judaism (BTW interesting that Ivanka seems to have decided not to adopt that custom despite professing to observe an Orthodox lifestyle). I also dislike the practices surrounding halal and kosher slaughter methods because I feel they are unnecessarily cruel. There's plenty more I disagree with!

I think educators at the moment are caught between a rock and a hard place, in more ways than one!

amispartacus · 05/02/2017 17:22

Now now...that's the typical narrative when this happens - except the same thing is said about right wing attackers who use violence and that's conveniently forgotten.

There are sadly people who have issues that probably means they use violence to justify their attacks. If you keep hearing people, respected people, people in authority, use dog whistle tactics etc - that can help make your more extreme views seem acceptable, especially if you live in an echo chamber of reinforced views. It makes racism, sexism, homophobia seem acceptable if you live in an echo chamber. And if you are told that 'other' people are attacking your views, damaging your way of life, that can trigger something.

You'll note that I did not refer to a specific religion because that can be applied to anything. Attacks on Muslims, attacks on LGBT people, women, black people, far right people, Westerners etc.

If all you hear is hate, if you all are told is that other people are not 'you' and they will destroy your way of life, if you are manipulated to think like that and if you are vulnerable to such thoughts, it's not a short leap to see how you can carry out violence against someone.

I fear it's the judges next....

One thing though - this period of history should be the perfect opportunity to explore a lot of themes.

It must be hard for an educator to remain neutral - as they should. It can be good to play 'Devil's advocate' - I am just looking forward to Trump mentioning the Devil soon.

Critical thinking and exposure to different views is a must.

I don't understand why the attack at the Louvre is a worry, but the attack in Quebec isn't.

Even if the Quebec attack wasn't political (and he was definitely a supporter of Trump and Le pen) and you argue that he was a 'lone wolf' with mental health problems... In the US it would apparently be worth the risk of selling him a gun because God forbid his constitutional rights under the 2nd amendment should be infringed?!

This is not just and American issue. I have now heard a few English people talk as if this is foolish Americans who don't make the effort to learn stuff as if the British as so much more educated and liberal. We just voted to leave the EU after a campaign that openly dismissed the views of exeperts. Farage is still a person that people apparently listen to. There are plenty of Trump supporters over here who spout off anti immigration, racist bollocks. And we are not alone. There is a real rise in popularity of far right parties with it seeming increasingly possible they will get excellent results in elections in French and Germany.
