To bloody love Madonna for doing this?

I've been watching the speeches from the Washington women's march today and have felt so inspired and uplifted by them, it's really given me hope, didn't know Madonna was going to be there and I don't want to take away anything from the other speakers as they've all been brilliant but I just wanted to say well done Madonna for being there and adding your voice ( and admittedly celebrity kudos and attention) to this amazing show of dissent, power and love.

Just had a big argument with 'D'H as he feels she has a cheek commenting on trump Hmm

Rainmaker1 · 21/01/2017 23:00

She can get to fuck!

ScarletForYa · 21/01/2017 23:03

Meh, old rent-a-gob. She'll attach herself to any old cause just to grasp any scrap of media attention she can.

Can't stand her. Quite a stupid woman imo.

BigCockSuckyBalls · 21/01/2017 23:34

She's a silly twunt

glitterazi · 21/01/2017 23:35

I just bloody love Madonna. Just wanted to put that out there.

Destinysdaughter · 21/01/2017 23:43

I admire the fact that she's an incredibly real rich woman who didn't need to put herself out and come on stage, give an inspiring speech and sing for us all She won't personally be affected by any of Trump's policies but has the integrity and commitment to ally herself on the side of true democracy, decency and human rights, probably knowing she'll get stick for it ( like she already has on this thread, did any of you actually watch the link posted, or was it just a knee jerk reaction...?)

Celebrities should stick to entertaining. I have no interest in their opinions outside their respective fields. As for the march; masses of clueless sheep jumping on the "it" bandwagon. I wonder what it will be next week...

derxa · 22/01/2017 10:03

I'm sick of rich celebrities lecturing me.

Leviticus · 22/01/2017 10:30

user you'd apply that standard to yourself would you? That you should be entirely defined by and limited to talking about the work you do? Should only politicians have a say about politics?

Scarlet Madonna has a long history of standing up for marginalised groups and being very political. She was dropped by Pepsi in the late 80s for 'daring' to represent Jesus using a black actor in the Like a Prayer video. Can you even imagine that now?

One of the (many) reasons I like Madonna is because she thinks about issues beyond the glittering entertainment bubble and is interested enough in the lives of other people to take a stand, even when it's made her incredibly unpopular.

User, what's your field? Just so that we can be sure to tell you to stick to your own field if you air opinions on anything else...

That wasn't a political statement - that was what Madonna is best at, self-promotion and publicity. She knew the black Jesus thing would cause a massive fuss, she enjoyed the controversy, the newspaper coverage, the televidion reports. Her career in the 80s/90s was just one self-promotion stunt after another.

She's struggling now as there is a younger breed of shameless "celebrity" publicity seekers like the Kardashians, Lily Allen, Lady Gaga etc etc etc who are competing for Madge's limelight.

Destinysdaughter · 22/01/2017 10:51

Sad how pp are so cynical about her motives. What if she's genuinely outraged about Trump and wants to use her voice and celebrity status to inspire and empower other women?

Madonna is one of the biggest attention seekers out there. No time for her.

TammySwansonxx · 22/01/2017 10:58

I love her

Notinmybackyard · 22/01/2017 11:01

I've been a fan of Madonna's music but I think saying that she considered "blowing up the White House" just a bit extreme. I think celebrities endorsement of causes irritates a lot of people and can often make people vote the opposite way. Even Obama telling The UK we would "go to the back of the queue" in trade deals if we left the EU rubbed a lot of people up the wrong way.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 22/01/2017 11:03

Celebrities can lend causes a profile they wouldn't otherwise have.

If you're rich and famous you can donate money to a cause but you can also donate your fame - in many cases that is more powerful than cash.

Sure there will always be arguments about bandwagon jumping and self-publicity, and in an ideal world people would be talking about issues just because they're important, not because a attended a march, given a speech, visited a refugee camp or whatever. But celebrities can do a lot of good with their status and I am glad many choose to do so.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 22/01/2017 11:04

*a celeb attended a march...

exLtEveDallas · 22/01/2017 11:04

I get that she is passionate and a strong advocate for women's rights, but her "dreaming (thinking?) about blowing up the White House" sticks in my throat. Violence and/or terrorism is never the answer (and this comes from someone who has been sent to 3 wars!), no matter that it's a throwaway remark that she wouldn't follow through.

It's awkward. I'm glad she has passions, but not that she wishes for violence.

Truckingalong · 22/01/2017 11:08

Yeah she's a publicity seeker but she certainly got publicity for this, which is great. She spoke with passion and conviction and she didn't have to do it at all, so fair play to her I say.

MuseumOfCurry · 22/01/2017 11:09

Hollywood loves Obama - they never peeped a word of protest when he veered into some very Trump-friendly territory (drones, surveillance, etc). Why is that?

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 22/01/2017 11:16

Didn't Madonna invite a girl upon stage and pull the poor girls her top / bra off not too long ago?

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 22/01/2017 11:19

Maybe she should stay away from indecent assaults herself.
