To think that she can't have bpd and asd

My 21 year old daughter has been seeing cmht after Mutiple sucide attempts. It's been suggested that she may have bpd but looking at two conditions I can't see how she can have both due to the overlap of them.

Women with ASD are often misdiagnosed with BPD.

WonkoTheSane42 · 25/11/2016 20:27

I know someone who has both. Plus ADHD.

Allofme78 · 25/11/2016 20:29

She was diagnosed with as at 14 after years of friendship issues.

I don't think there's any reason why someone cannot have both PD and ASD.

Allofme78 · 25/11/2016 20:30

Because inabity to regulate emotions can also be a part of asd.

Why does that mean you can't have ASD and BPD all of me? Just means there could be two equally valid reasons for emotional dysregulation.

Allofme78 · 25/11/2016 20:32

Because she and I both think that's her asd not bpd. The lack of trust of people and change in emotions could be because of things that have gone on in her life.

It could be due to many things, BPD is a symptom/effect rather than a cause. I'd keep an open mind. Are you particularly against a BPD diagnosis and if so is there a reason?

GetOutMyCar · 25/11/2016 20:38

When I was diagnosed with ASD I had an assessment for BPD first. The consultant told me that this was because you cannot have both. He said BPD is related to psychosis and the most recent research suggests that autism and psychosis cannot co-exist because they are diametrically opposed.

Allofme78 · 25/11/2016 20:42

I don't have anything against bpd I just don't feel that she has it.

OP posts:
maggiethemagpie · 25/11/2016 20:43

Well, I guess if she is tested for it, the experts are the best ones to say whether she does or doesn't. Hope she gets the treatment she needs.

nocoolnamesleft · 25/11/2016 20:43

Hang on, do you mean BPD bi-polar disorder, or BPD borderline personality disorder? Because the answer would probably be different.

Allofme78 · 25/11/2016 20:44

Border line personality disorder

OP posts:
ChanglingNight · 25/11/2016 20:51

I've worked with several people (all female) with both

NeverGoOutOfStyle · 25/11/2016 20:58

Yes. You can have both together. What are you struggling to see?

GoofyTheHero · 25/11/2016 21:00

I'd wait and see what the experts say TBH

Allofme78 · 25/11/2016 21:05

I think the traits they are saying could be bpd are simply asd.

OP posts:
GoofyTheHero · 25/11/2016 21:06

But that doesn't mean they can't do-exist, does it?

BantyCustards · 25/11/2016 21:09

At the end of they day all that matters is that your daughter'symptoms are managed in a way that helps her.
My son has a diagnosis of ASD but it's a very broad spectrum - responding to how it affects him is far more useful than fesponding to the label

She's been unable to mange her emotions since she was a child so surely she couldn't have had a personality disorder at ten.

OP posts:
mrwalkensir · 25/11/2016 21:22

stop being so nasty and superior GinAndTonic - this is a parent whose child has attempted suicide multiple times trying to understand what is going on. She's trying to educate herself - she doesn't deserve being beaten up for doing so.

Allofme78 · 25/11/2016 21:23

I'm sorry if I've offended anyone and I am genuinely trying to get the right help for her.

My diagnosis is BPD. When unwell, I've often felt I have ASD. I think they're more similar than they initially seem. Hope your DD is ok. BPD is shit, but you can get better.
