To ask if this is appropriate office wear?

I work in a big law firm. Today I wore a navy dress about an inch above knee and skin coloured tights. Is this weird in winter?! Felt I got a few funny looks but might be being paranoid?

What style was the dress? If it was skin tight and you were also wearing heels, it may have been to much.

No - black flats and a loose non tight fitting dress.

Well, it sounds fine to me, but only you know what everyone else wears / what is 'expected'. If everyone is expected to wear black, or if everyone is expected to wear a suit or whatever.

Are you a lawyer. If so, probably a bit too informal. If not the women were envious and the men probably liked it hence the looks.

I'm an accountant. I feel like a proper filthy strumpet if I wear flesh coloured tights at work. I have no idea why! Wouldn't bat an eyelid at anyone else wearing them though, I can't say I've ever even noticed anyone else's tights. No idea what my issue is with me wearing them.

Depends on your role of course but, for example a skater dress and ballet flats would have been too casual when I worked in private practice.

I am a lawyer yes - I know, I don't know if it's because it's cold but I was the only one in flesh coloured tights and felt really exposed!! Don't know why?

The skirt sounds too short to be professional, the naked tights with a short skirt are a bit much for the office, and I'm not saying that because I'm jealous

Without seeing the outfit I have no idea is our was professional or no. But you felt exposed because it's cold. Put your thermals on duck.

Also, remember that a skirt becomes / appears to be much shorter when you are sitting down, that it looks when you first try it on / put it on in the morning, and are standing up to check the mirror.

Im 6ft, any skirt above the knee makes me look all leg.

If you can touch your toes and not see your knickers your ok.

An inch above the knee is not too short IMO quite respectable, when i worked in the city there was a rule about how long skirts had to be as a minimum, on me :) it would have been obscene!

An inch above the knee! That's hardly too short to look professional. As for the looks - they were probably wondering whether you were bare legged and made of hardy weather-immune stuff...

You probably just looked good, hence the looks. Sounds like a perfectly fine outfit to me. But I like vintage dresses worn with seamed tights, and even I feel exposed sometimes, there is something about the nude tights that feels exposing and attracts attention.

I also work for a big city firm. Flesh coloured tights at the end of November will get you looks - put your opaques on till April now

I really don't think nude tights are out of place in a professional environment, in fact I think of them as smarter than opaque tights by miles.

You skirt does not sound too short either.

Its quite difficult to get navy clothes to go nicely with black shoes (depends a bit on the shade of navy).

Agree with Ineednew, nude tights are very 'grown up' now because people haven't been wearing th as much as black opaque. But I think a lot of people in law copy each other and play it too safe to the point of frumpy. Just my opinion

Flesh coloured tights in winter are the preserve of a specific kind of woman in the city, but to be honest if you aren't cold (and aren't prowling for a rich investment banker sugar daddy) then there's no problem.

Sounds fine. If I gave you a funny look it'd be because I was wondering if you'd accidentally put on black shoes. Weird because my school uniform was navy and everyone wore black shoes, but now I'd wear navy.

I'm not seeing the issue with flesh coloured tights in the winter Opaques just don't go with navy. I'm a lawyer and have a navy suit and always wear flesh coloured tights (regardless of the time of year) when I wear it. Can't say I've had any funny looks. You're either over-thinking it or there was something inappropriate about your dress. Can you post a pic of it?

You obviously drive to work or don't live in Scotland! You would get funny looks in my office as we would be marvelling at your hardiness. Minus 6 here - thin tights would look most odd.
