To ask if this is appropriate office wear?

I work in a big law firm. Today I wore a navy dress about an inch above knee and skin coloured tights. Is this weird in winter?! Felt I got a few funny looks but might be being paranoid?

OP posts:
Mymothersdaughter · 25/11/2016 06:39

I asked a colleague once if my dress was too short. She said 'if you need to ask then the answer is yes'. She didn't think it looked too short objectively but she said you have to be comfortable and if you feel paranoid about it all day then yes it's too short.

Waffles80 · 25/11/2016 06:40

What the fuck Colby

Hideously misogynistic attitude. No wonder that glass ceiling is so firmly in place.

footballmum · 25/11/2016 06:49

Absolutely Waffles As I say I wear flesh coloured tights regularly and as a sucessful lawyer in my own right, have absolutely no desire to find a "sugar daddy" Hmm

Candlelight123 · 25/11/2016 06:54

Honestly?!? I've never worked anywhere where anyone would have given the tiniest shit about whether I wore black or nude tights.

Musiclife · 25/11/2016 06:57

Sounds fine to me. Maybe they thought you had bare legs.

eurochick · 25/11/2016 07:00

It sounds like paranoia to me. Most people do wear opaques at this type of year but you do still see some nude tights around. I wear dresses a bit shorter than that for work (partner in City law firm).

Fluffyears · 25/11/2016 07:02

I would have done a double take thinking 'oh god is she not cold'

Thisismadness · 25/11/2016 07:02

It sounds fine. Maybe people just noticed you looked a bit different than usual (if say you normally wear a dark suit/trousers etc)?

MissBeehiving · 25/11/2016 07:04

I'm a lawyer and that sounds fine to me. I'm in opaques now though because my legs get cold.

MrsHiddleston · 25/11/2016 07:05

I have felt anxious about what I was wearing to work before, thinking people were looking at me, judging. In my case it was simply because people thought I looked nice. Try not to overthink it and dress so you're comfortable. If you are worrying g about what you look like then you're hardly going to be very productive.

wowfudge · 25/11/2016 07:05

Oh my, flesh coloured tights mean what?! What tosh colby. No idea why my first post appeared twice. From the sound of things you just look good! I wear a navy Jaeger dress with either flesh coloured tights or navy opaques. I have navy shoes too, but don't always wear them with the dress.

ToastDemon · 25/11/2016 07:07

This stuff mattering is like a different world to me.
Where I work there are people wearing leggings as trousers, completely see through blouses exposing black lace bras.... OP you sound the height of respectability by comparison.

Gbean · 25/11/2016 07:08

Sounds fine. I also work in a big law firm but we have quite a relaxed dress code. I'm wearing jeans today. It also gets v warm in our office, I wouldn't want to be in opaques as I'd bake. I've worn flesh coloured tights LOADS and nobody has batted any eyelid. I choose glossy ones as the matte ones can be a bit Nora Batty < shows age >

WTAFF · 25/11/2016 07:09

I'm a solicitor and work in house where the dress code is fairly casual.

However, when I worked in private practice for a large regional law firm it was quite formal. I still don't think Inwouod have thought twice about the outfit you describe though.

Seriously, don't worry about it. If the nude tights make you uncomfortable just ditch them and get some navy ones perhaps. Smile

MissBeehiving · 25/11/2016 07:11

absolutely astonished by some of the comments especially about nude tights being the preserve of a "certain type of woman". ARE YOU MAD?

Kr1stina · 25/11/2016 07:14

If you want more specific advice we need a photo of you in the outfit ( headless of course ) and to know what type of solicitors you work in and where .

Expectations for a trainee will be different in a family law firm in Perth and corporate in London .

saoirse31 · 25/11/2016 07:15

Times change..... As teenager admittedly in the 70s, nude coloured tights were the preserve of the middle aged.... The idea of them being as what Colby described are hilarious thinking back. Tho Colby, really, what a bizarre comment.

MissBeehiving · 25/11/2016 07:16

Thinking about it, was at the High Court yesterday and Counsel was in nude tights. She must have been on the prowl for a sugar daddy🙄

I might wear nude tights today in solidarity with the OP

5to2 · 25/11/2016 07:21

I've been wearing (smart) trousers and a plain jumper every day for the last few weeks. It's cold.

Dress and (any colour) tights are the new uniform for women in the city. Hardly anyone wears a suit.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 25/11/2016 07:29

An inch above the knee is a nice length.

Maybe it's just that I'm short and it's only a three inch difference between too short and risking flashing, and halfway down my shins looking stumpy and frumpy Grin

Nude tights are fine.

Paffle · 25/11/2016 07:29

I'm a partner in a large City law firm. Yesterday I wore a navy dress that finished about an inch above the knee and sheer nude tights and navy shoes. My only issue was that the dress was shorter than I'd normally wear because I don't really have the legs for it.

You've described a smart professional outfit. Don't waste any more energy worrying about it.

lasttimeround · 25/11/2016 07:32

You can't win can you. I thought you were supposed to wear 'nude' tights with navy and to wear black was a faux pas. Which ruled out navy for me as I'm mixed race and nude tights look spooky. Like black face in reverse.
If office is formal was your dress suity enough.
I once did an internship in Nairobi and the suit I'd bought had a skirt just above the knee. Everyone oohed and ahhed sbout my "mini' and how brave i wss and I was taken off trips to court and stuck in the library to research background material. I didn't know where to buy a suitable alternative so there I was office hussy for 8 weeks. Miserable

gamerwidow · 25/11/2016 07:35

Sounds fine to me, skirt is long enough and flesh coloured tights and flats are fine . I would agree though that if you are questioning your outfit you probably weren't 100% comfortable with it so for that reason alone I wouldn't wear it again.

cuckooplusone · 25/11/2016 07:36

Crikey, I am an accountant in my 40s and I wear that sort thing nearly every day. I think that thick opaque tights are a bit informal for the office.

lasttimeround · 25/11/2016 07:36

The nude with navy came from oxbridge friend who told me I would get a job if I wore black tights with navy as it showed an appalling lack of...I can't remember what. I remember my 20s as endless humiliation getting this stuff wrong snd people giving me tips in the loos about how my cluelessness was blighting my career. I dont work in law anymore
