To ask if this is appropriate office wear?

I work in a big law firm. Today I wore a navy dress about an inch above knee and skin coloured tights. Is this weird in winter?! Felt I got a few funny looks but might be being paranoid?

This is why I'm glad I work in house. Nude coloured tights, a nude/beige skater dress about 3 inches above the knee and a cardi for me yesterday. I'm clearly a bit of a strumpet!

CeeCeeEnnEss · 25/11/2016 07:40

Sounds fine to me!

throwingpebbles · 25/11/2016 07:43

Haha this is why I work in-house now. I can do really interesting high-value legal work whilst wearing what the hell I like!

indigox · 25/11/2016 10:28

Is it a lot different from something you'd normally wear? Perhaps the "looks" we're purely because of that?

I once went to work in jeans (totally allowed and normal in our office) and got weird looks and comments as I'm always wearing skirts/dresses.

GiGiraffe · 25/11/2016 10:38

I am Shockat the responses on this thread! (In fairness I work for one of the big 4 in the city so different atmosphere perhaps) no one would bat an eye at flesh coloured tights. The (very senior) Partner I work for has been known to wear leather skirts to the office with huge heels (she is fabulously flamboyant) and it just isn't an issue. Law and investment banking must be the only places that an inch above the knee is remarkable (lucky for me I don't work in either industry as at 6'1 in bare feet I'd have no chance at getting a skirt that long!)

daisypond · 25/11/2016 11:08

Your outfit sounds just fine to me. It's standard professional women's office attire. An inch above the knee is not too short, and flesh-coloured tights are normal - nothing to frighten the horses there! Whether it's winter or summer doesn't matter.

SteppingOnToes · 25/11/2016 11:14

If you feel paranoid and embarrassed then you know yourself it is a bit much. You want to base your career on your skill and professionalism, not being seen as someone wearing short skirts to get ahead.

timeisnotaline · 25/11/2016 11:16

I work in a big professional services firm. Sounds modest and fine to me! I notice skirts that are halfway up the thing but there are A LOT of those, especially amongst the graduates and junior staff so clearly nobody else notices

Allthebestnamesareused · 25/11/2016 12:43

Another lawyer here who thinks that navy dress and nude tights sounds like normal office attire here. (Gone are the days of having to be suited and having to be in black).

Are you sure there's not a ruddy great ladder in them?

AlpacaPicnic · 25/11/2016 12:45

I'm not bothered by the skirt length but I do need to know what kind of sleeves were on the dress...
Long? Short? Spaghetti straps?

LuckySantangelo1 · 25/11/2016 12:54

This concept of an inch above the knee being too short is hilarious! OP isn't Kate Middleton!

INeedNewShoes · 25/11/2016 12:57

I just did a quick Google and even Kate often wears skirts slightly above the knee! And often wears Navy, and has worn nude tights even in winter at times!

ThymeLord · 25/11/2016 12:59

Have I fallen into a wormhole and travelled back to the 1950s? WTF am I reading here?!!!

I'm wearing a navy dress and nude tights right now on way back from presenting at a board meeting. No one has ever suggested inappropriate - winter or summer. It's perfectly normal office wear - and I say that after 18 years in the city. My dress is about an inch below the knee and I wouldn't go short for work - i think at my age short would raise eyebrows! But a little over the knee sounds fine! I really wouldn't worry.

Believeitornot · 25/11/2016 13:13

I think the dress sounds a bit short actually in an office environment. I work in a professional services firm and that would be seen a bit short unless you had thick tights....

SapphireStrange · 25/11/2016 13:17

An inch above the knee is too short? Confused Hmm

Other lawyers on here seem to be sanguine about it. OP, was it your first day in the office?

Believeitornot · 25/11/2016 13:18

Well yes, especially when you sit down and it rides up even more!

ThymeLord · 25/11/2016 13:20

How is one inch above the knee too short, and too short for what?

oldlaundbooth · 25/11/2016 13:22

Are nude tights really that bad?

thisisafakename · 25/11/2016 13:22

even Kate often wears skirts slightly above the knee!

Haha, Kate wears skirts WAY above the knee and is known to flash her arse while wearing a thong, so that's not necessarily anything to go by.

I can't understand why that outfit would be considered weird in any law firm (I have worked in a few and women are generally not expected to wear a suit unless going to court and nude tights are fine). Was your dress possibly tucked into your tights/pants? Or did you have any embarrassing stains on it? Otherwise, I would just put it down to paranoia.

rides up even more!

It'd have to ride up quite dramatically to be a problem, no?

SteppingOnToes · 25/11/2016 13:24

How is one inch above the knee too short, and too short for what?

If the person wearing it is self conscious then it is too short for them...

SellFridges · 25/11/2016 13:27

Where do you even buy skirts from that don't sit just above the knee?!

I think opaques are pretty casual tbh. Skin coloured much smarter.
