To think Board Games are a really poor quality these days

Over recent years we have bought several new versions of the old classics including Guess Who, Connect 4 etc. I'm sure they used to be much better made, solid and hardwaring. These new versions seem cheap and nasty. Can't even get the Guess Who characters to stay up, making the game pretty frustrating to play.

YANBU

Kerplunk is awful these days and falls apart every time you try to poke a straw through.

Gonzales27 · 13/10/2016 17:36

Totally agree. The hungry hippos game I bought jams every two seconds. I'm looking for an original version on eBay.

whensitmyturn · 13/10/2016 17:40

Totally agree especially with guess who, literally threw that in the bin on Monday as it kept falling to pieces.

And don't even get me started on Mousetrap Angry

harderandharder2breathe · 13/10/2016 17:45

Agree, they seem very flimsy and not designed to last (which is good for the manufacturers i suppose Confused)

Sammysquiz · 13/10/2016 17:45

The new Guess Who is awful, especially the animal side, I can't even tell what half of them are. They're all some kind of mouse/rabbit hybrid!

firawla · 13/10/2016 18:07

We bought one the special character based guess who's (sky landers) it was made by hasbro so I thought it would be ok but it was absolute crap - loads of bits to put together and quality was shockingly bad, it ended up in the bin! So yanbu

There are still other games around that have much better quality though

SaucyJack · 13/10/2016 18:08

They're all half the price they were in "our" day tho. Something's gotta give.

ToTheCrystalDome · 13/10/2016 20:27

Mousetrap never even worked back in the 80s! I was rather hoping it might have improved by now!!

dinosaursarebisexual · 13/10/2016 21:57

We're still using mine which are 40 odd years old. I never had kerplunk tho, fashioned my own out of loo rolls and cocktail sticks at the time.

WhirlwindHugs · 13/10/2016 22:03

I had this exact conversation about kerplunk. It's just really cheap production and obviously going to break and end up in landfill sooner rather than later.

I bought a classic game thinking it would last a long time in good condition, so disapointed in how crappy the environmental side is.

Yoarchie · 13/10/2016 22:07

Most toys and games are terrible quality these days. Bought some top trumps and the plastic case was such bad quality that recycled it and put 2 hair bands round the cards to keep them together.

It was poorly manufactured and every time you open and shut it, it grazed off a small piece of plastic. Lovely and safe!

Costs are cut in every conceivable way. Thing is, everything is now so shit, I'd rather not have it at all!

TaraCarter · 13/10/2016 22:10

Yanbu and yabu. I don't doubt that your experiences that newer editions of Mousetrap, etc, are flimsy but there are a lot of new board games on the market which are extremely high quality.

Only1scoop · 13/10/2016 22:12

Yanbu
Cluedo a piece of flimsy card tat
Twister mat is now a flimsy piece of plastic and spinner.
Such a shame
So glad we kept some of our originals

Gutted2016 · 13/10/2016 22:12

We have tried to play Mouse Trap 15 times since we got it for Xmas. BIL is an architect and still no luck.

babybythesea · 13/10/2016 22:13

I also hate the way the Guess Who board has to be propped up against the other board. If it's hard to sit directly opposite the other player the game is unplayable. And as soon as one person moves the board pieces flap down, but you can't just tip it up and start again because the other players pieces all fall down. And I hate the animal side - too difficult to tell what some of them are. And as for picking your own character - I want the cards back where you alternately cheer or groan because you've picked an easy/difficult one to guess.

Darwinisafish · 13/10/2016 22:14

YANBU. I threw guess who away on Monday.
Don't get me started on Operation. I bought it for DD because I never had it as a child and all my friends did and it is impossible to lose !!! The holes for the body parts are bloody huge, plus you can just pick what to take out. Didn't there used to be cards?

MrGrumpy01 · 13/10/2016 22:14

I hunt charity shops for the original versions of games.

I bought an Original Guess Who but a piece is missing, we will probably just play without it.

I am wanting Scotland Yard but worried that they will have done something bad to the modern version and may just buy an original on eBay instead.

babybythesea · 13/10/2016 22:14

And is anyone Elle slightly baffled by the current trend for games relating to poo/bogeys etc? I spend half my life picking up dog poo, and the remaining half wiping the kids snotty noses. I do not want to play a game centred on this.

Only1scoop · 13/10/2016 22:14

Guess who yes what a let down that has become

Gutted2016 · 13/10/2016 22:15

At least there are more women in Guess Who now though.

Saves all those "Is it a woman?" Yes. "Is it Maria?" games.

babybythesea · 13/10/2016 22:15

I'm on an eBay hunt for Build a Better Burger which my sister and I played endlessly. I found one once. A snip at the price at £99....

MrGrumpy01 · 13/10/2016 22:17

darwin Yes there was card - a doctor and a specialist and you won money if you managed to do the 'operation' I can't quite remember how the two sets of cards worked though.

MrGrumpy01 · 13/10/2016 22:18

Oh yes 'is it a women?' question, you were just gutted if you picked a female card as you knew you would just loose.

Tywinlannister · 13/10/2016 22:20

Is it a woman?

Yes...

3 cards left standing. Confused

MrsMook · 13/10/2016 22:22

There's minimal difference between the branded board games and cheap £5 versions now. Growing up in the 80s/ 90s, parts were chunky and well made, and packaging kept parts safe for long term use. Now its all flimsy and easy to break/ lose. I'd much rather pay for a decent quality that lasts than buy into a cheap disposable culture.
