To think Board Games are a really poor quality these days

Over recent years we have bought several new versions of the old classics including Guess Who, Connect 4 etc. I'm sure they used to be much better made, solid and hardwaring. These new versions seem cheap and nasty. Can't even get the Guess Who characters to stay up, making the game pretty frustrating to play.

Thanks Grumpy, I'm not going mad. I bloody hate the game now, can just about make a game last 3 minutes.

GiraffesAndButterflies · 13/10/2016 22:25

Is it a woman?
Is it Maria?

Grin That takes me back!!

OohMavis · 13/10/2016 22:25

We got Frustration on the weekend, it has a genie now! But actually was quite impressed with the quality.

We also got Kerplunk though and can't say the same Sad

Tywinlannister · 13/10/2016 22:28

I can't bear Kerplunk. 25 hours to set up, game done in 25 seconds Angry

My plastic sticks are all bent so they don't go all the way through!

Pineapplemilkshake · 13/10/2016 22:32

Oh no, I've just bought Operation for DS for his birthday!

On the plus side, I still have my original Mousetrap from 1988 and it is fab.

Muddlingalongalone · 13/10/2016 22:37

Mousetrap, hungry hippos & guess who all crap.
I deliberately choose a woman still in new guess who if I want to give her a chance. There aren't that many more!!
Chad Valley bingo is the pits though in badly made shit quality cheap plastic

emwithme · 13/10/2016 22:39

Is their head on upside down?
yes
Is it Richard

TheSnorkMaidenReturns · 13/10/2016 22:39

Can I introduce you all to the fantastic modern 'board games' you can get? They're not cheap but are amazing. I'm old and took some persuading that Monopoly could be beaten, but over the past few years we're loved Forbidden Island, Carcassonne and The Settlers of Catan.
Our copy of Cleudo is a pile of flimsy shite but still fun, obviously.
This is the place to look for advice but it's a bit garish for me!

BonusNewt · 13/10/2016 22:46

"Is it a woman, is it Maria" really takes me back too! I used to like Anne, she looked like she ran a pub and was hard as nails.

Sammysquiz · 14/10/2016 14:38

Trying to remember the other Guess Who women now! I remember Susan with long white hair & big lips, and one who wore a green beret? Was that Maria? And someone in a flowery hat?

Sammysquiz · 14/10/2016 14:40

Just looked it up. Seeing these familiar old faces feels like seeing lost-lost family!Grin

Jenijena · 14/10/2016 14:44

I remember when I was about 7 or 8 I got £20 for Christmas from my grandad and I bought a bedside light (from bhs) and Guess Who. I'd expect to pay about the same now, wouldn't I..

Maria, Susan and Anne. My guess who is still very much playable do I'll just have to point of the gender imbalance as part of my sons' feminist education...

(Just remembered, Alfred with the long hair and moustache...)

Jenijena · 14/10/2016 14:45

(Can't be exactly sure, but I reckon that £20 was from Christmas 1988)

namechangingagainagain · 14/10/2016 14:51

Buckaroo is now a massive disappointment.... In the 80's Im sure the donkey was more sturdy... you can't get the frame to stay on now :(

Claire dreamt of running a tea shop in the Cotswolds, George was a 40s noir detective, David ran a Christian youth club and Alfred had an injunction banning him from stepping foot inside a children's playground.

SaucyJack · 14/10/2016 17:49

Allegedly.

ToTheCrystalDome · 14/10/2016 20:30

And the age-old debate as to whether Bernard actually had a moustache....

Toffeelatteplease · 14/10/2016 20:34

You're playing the wrong board games.

Although my modern branded version of connect four is almost identical. It's just the kids aren't really interested in it.

Egoanono · 14/10/2016 22:28

Love the Guess Who back stories. Maria was the one with the bob right?

OP posts:
BusStopBetty · 14/10/2016 22:32

I agree, we have the old versions of things like connect 4 and guess who at grandparents' houses. They're far sturdier than the cheapo shitey versions you get now.

StopLaughingDrRoss · 14/10/2016 22:33

Are they chewing a toffee? meant you could down a serious amount of flaps Grin

Egoanono · 15/10/2016 19:24

I wish there was a way you could pay a premium price to get a version of these games that actually worked. I'm writing to Guess Who and Connect 4 to complain.

OP posts:
Muddlingalongalone · 15/10/2016 20:53

Maria was the one with the green hat.

Dd has just told me how much she's enjoying operation at school. Hope she's forgotten by the time she writes her Christmas list!!!

Elbekind · 15/10/2016 21:02

Totally agree about kerplunk! I've owned a game of kerplunk since I was a very young child and I only replaced it last week. I'm a childminder so it gets a lot of use and the only reason for replacing was because I was missing so many of the marbles/sticks and the cardboard box was completely broken.
The new game is shocking! Terrible quality, I didn't even know if I had put it together properly because it was so flimsy and trying to thread all the sticks through without the game falling down is near impossible Confused
