Being middle class based on what you own?

Anyone seen this "quiz" in the telegraph - aside from the fact that it is probably just to flog certain items, anyone agree with this list or come out with all of them.

Hot tubs ffs? "vulgar" no? Wink

Very vulgar. I don't understand this idea that you can 'buy' your way into a class.

DayToDayGlobalShit · 29/09/2016 08:41

According to that I am solidly middle class. Apparently.

DayToDayGlobalShit · 29/09/2016 08:42

I don't understand it though. I do not own a hot tub. Brompton Bike, smart tv, aga or most of the other things.

Mozfan1 · 29/09/2016 08:42

I got 1 out of them all... I'm scum bag!

BlancheBlue · 29/09/2016 08:43

day are you writing this from your hot tub? Wink

BusStopBetty · 29/09/2016 08:43

I was very surprised to see some of those items included. Did they perhaps confuse the uk with the USA, where class is wealth linked?

DayToDayGlobalShit · 29/09/2016 08:43

I think you are supposed to NOT own most of the stuff?

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 29/09/2016 08:44

I only own 4 out of 16 and I am very very middle class! Grin

everythingis · 29/09/2016 08:45

I'm
Not middle class according to the list but I do have a hot tub Grin

Mozfan1 · 29/09/2016 08:45

Day I own 1 and got NOT middle class.

fitzbilly · 29/09/2016 08:45

It's just a ploy to get insecure social climbers to buy more and consume more.

eurochick · 29/09/2016 08:46

3/16 but am about as middle class as they come, just not very consumerist or label conscious.

VanillaSugarandChristmasSpice · 29/09/2016 08:46

I have 6 and am solidly middle class. Someone should try it and say Yes to everything and then tell us what happens.

Chikara · 29/09/2016 08:46

You can measure classa by any number of methods - all will probably have a grain of logic in them. In the end class is a socially agreed construct. If I say I am middle class then I am. You can argue that unless I have a coffee maker and a husband with a profession then I can't possibly be and I might argue that despite your 4x4 and your penchant for olives you are not!!

In the end who cares? (Except the marketing chappies of course!!!!)

StrawberryQuik · 29/09/2016 08:47

LOL I got two of those.

Hot tubs may be 'vulgar' but they're fun. Best 18th birthday party I went to was a sleep over where we drank wine in my friends parents hot tub. We felt so sophisticated. :)

AnthonyPandy · 29/09/2016 08:47

Ha! I don't own any of those things!

fitzbilly · 29/09/2016 08:48

Daytoday I guess not owning most of that stuff makes you upper class?

The quiz said I'm not middle class, well I'm certainly not working class so I'm not sure where that leaves me?

VanillaSugarandChristmasSpice · 29/09/2016 08:48

We bought a house with a hot tub Nd then got rid of it because the previous owners were so diiiirrrrrty 😲😨

Champers4Pampers · 29/09/2016 08:48

I own quite a few things on the list but wouldn't particularly describe myself as middle class. It's a load of rubbishy.
(Don't have a hot tub, but I'm not ashamed to say I love my Smeg retro fridge. Now if I could only afford the toaster & kettle to match.)

mrsm43s · 29/09/2016 08:49

According to that we're not middle class.

I'd say we're squarely middle class, possibly even upper middle - degree educated, professional jobs, own home, kids at independent schools, visit museums and galleries, have pensions and investments.

We're not very materialistic, particularly regarding branded items. We're more into reusing and sustainability, and ethical production than buying the latest brand name. We're not into TV watching, so don't have a smart TV.

I don't think that list remotely resembles middle class living.

2rebecca · 29/09/2016 08:50

Also solidly middle class despite only having 7. Am also posh based on the quiz following it despite going for the microwave and not getting the red trouser thing

RaspberryIce · 29/09/2016 08:51

Only one I've got is a bbq and it says I'm not middle class

BlancheBlue · 29/09/2016 08:53

16/16 gives "You are EXTREMELY Middle Class"!

OP posts:
CecilyP · 29/09/2016 08:53

Wouldn't expect anyone to own all of them. I got 3 and apparently not middle class. Or perhaps just not very materialistic. I decided I was middle class when I realised my drive was the only one in my road without a van of some description parked outside!

EssentialHummus · 29/09/2016 08:54

Someone should try it and say Yes to everything and then tell us what happens.

They win a year's subscription to the Telegraph?

DP does this / buys into this. He grew up in a very rough part of the Soviet Union and really pulled himself up by his bootstraps ito career, studies etc. We both earn well, live in London, and he's regularly on at me about wanting to be more middle class. In practice this means that when our toaster broke, we had to buy it from John Lewis rather than the Argos on Old Kent Road.
